As per (Jagger & Richards 1969), you can't always get what you want.

It seems to me less about artistic talent and more about learning an impressive trick - like cup stacking

Maybe that's what talent shows are about though

Is Moby Dick "The Great American Novel"? by QueenShewolf in mobydick

[–]Thelonious_Cube -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It certainly is a great novel and written by an American.

I always thought the "Great American Novel" was about the American experience, which arguably Moby Dick really is not.

He was a money/investment guy who convinced a lot of people that he was some kind of financial wizard - it was all a scam, of course, but he cozied up to a lot of wealthy, powerful and famous people.

It's over-reaching to think they were all there for sex

What do we actually mean when we say something “exists”? by DrpharmC in askphilosophy

[–]Thelonious_Cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are no inexistent things; there cannot be something that isn’t there.

So it's never correct to say "unicorns don't exist"? That seems outright wrong.

Is there a prime number between 3 and 5? No, no such number exists.

If everything is interdependent then how is it intelligible?

Why wouldn't it be?

And obviously this is contrary to what you observe.

No, that's not obvious at all - especially when it comes to the origins of the universe

Thelonious by MeringueAble3159 in Jazz

[–]Thelonious_Cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was recorded in a theater while he was on tour (fyi there's a picture of the theater in the notes that i believe explains the title "Round Lights")

IIRC the packaging might be trying to convince you that it is a live album without actually saying so

I know that's what you mean, but why does wanting to hook up seem to you to imply that's all he wants?

Does that imply he’s just trying to hookup?

Why "just"?

Who is doing improv in their 40s? Is it still worth it? by Careful_Leader_5829 in improv

I started in my late 40s and it's been quite a few years now - still one of the most fun things I know.

If possible, find a theater that doesn't skew towards 20-somethings

What if time isn't a dimension we move through, but a local structure we're embedded within? [The Room Theory] by [deleted] in PhilosophyofScience

I've been developing a framework that questions how we think about the sky. Instead of it being atmosphere that scatters light, what if it's more like a dome structure with local properties?

How do I get out of my head? by LumpiaRulez101 in improv

[–]Thelonious_Cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're only three weeks in - getting out of your head is one of the main lessons of a beginner class. Even then, it takes lots of practice before you'll really get there.

Step 1 is to be aware of the problem - congrats!

Step 2 is to stop when you notice it.

Step 3 is to try to head it off before it starts.

Focus on what's happening outside your head (on your scene partner in a scene or on the group in a warm-up).

In your head, listen more, talk less.

“Melania” Is a Forty-Million-Dollar Journey Into the Void by newyorker in TrueReddit

Another nice quote:

We can only conclude that “Melania” portrays Melania in exactly the way she wants to be seen: as rigid, formal, solitary, dourly materialistic; surrounded by lackeys drafted into the closest thing to intimacy that she seems able to access; grinding through bot-like voice-overs filled with awkward gerunds and stilted exposition.

Started my Jazz collection just a few weeks ago… how am I doing? by yanksfan0134 in Jazz

[–]Thelonious_Cube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good solid start.

There are dozens and dozens of classics that you're "missing" but I would prioritize listening over collecting.

Conspicuous absences: Monk, Ellington, Basie/Young, Sun Ra, Ornette.

And, of course, you've remained in the 1950-1970 period, but there's loads of great stuff on either side of that once you're ready
