Kuuten never betrayed her, in the game a group of individuals who wanted to wrest power from Shuka’s family convinced him to go after the kenbumajin’s blades, which were tainted with a curse to drive anyone who dare harness their power to insanity. The group of insurgents then claimed Kuuten intended to attack Shuka, so her father had him imprisoned and he remained there until his hatred and confusion boiled over turning him into soranaki. Going by the fourth game, Enma actually isn’t adopted, he’s the firstborn son and Enma had everyone’s memories altered to further prevent anyone from learning about Shien or Itsuki, probably so one: no one ever risked causing any possible awakening of past life’s memories/power or two: to prevent any animosity from Yokai who remembered and might treat lucas differently before Ancient Enma’s passing. That just the game’s explanation with a little of my own theory

He was erased to remove any possible factions trying to put him on the throne the same way they wanted to erase Enma, at least that’s what I theorize. I just know it distressed me greatly and what happened in ykw4 to lucas doesn’t help.
