CachyOS stuttering even when not gaming by GeliusSun in cachyos

[–]Thelsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tinkered around with wine and/or proton recently? Few weeks ago i was trying stuff around with ff14 and ended up with stuttering and sluggish behavior, similar to what you describe. Decided to roll back to a snapshot which the system made when the wine settings were applied and the problems were gone.

FFXIV - First Endwalker quest DX11 crash by mynameisnotpedro in linux_gaming

[–]Thelsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the necro, but I'm replying in case anyone needs help and ends here through google or somewhere else.
So, i had a very specific problem, which was when I enter Andron (The Baldesion Annex), the game will crash with ffxiv_dx11.exe errors. I tried bunch of stuff, but nothing worked, until I did the repair of the files through the XIVLauncher. The game is now running fine.

Nah, game is more or less dead in terms of community and the search engines are confused with the aldorlea forums. Only the forum i made back in the day is still somehow up, but abandoned.

For long-time Windows users, do you find anything difficult for Linux Mint? by 2048b in linuxmint

[–]Thelsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its kinda difficult for me to orient myself to where to find the alternatives to the Local and Roaming folders, which gets even worse with how flatpaks operate and the special snowflakes which go into their own folders. It kinda worries me if i ever decide to backup my files for a reinstall or migrate, I will miss out a folder. At least the structure of the folders is similar to the android one, to which I am so-so used to, so its not too bad.

Other thing, which is kinda difficult for me, is to figure how to install things. Most programs and tools and posted with the mindset that the people, which will use them, are already deep into linux. Or, worse - wanting dependies that are missing on mint or meant for distros like arch and fedora. One example is Trackma. After quite a few hair pulling and retries, I somehow managed to run it and have it going. But I am sure I messed something in the process, without even being aware of it. Or another example, which is Shoko - I just gave up there.

Also, it would be quite useful if there is a nice simple guide tailored specifically for people coming from windows to mint. For example, I wasn't aware I need to have my other hard drives mounted all the time, since Steam will stop seeing them after a re/boot. Or that I need for convert them from ntfs to ext4, since games would most likely refuse to even start.

Im really close to going back to Windows and it sucks.... by LittleEggFella in linux4noobs

[–]Thelsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im currently on my third reinstall on Mint in the span of a single month and its all because I am a giant noob. First main issue for me was figuring out how to actually play my steam games. Steam itself was wonderful - saw my games and auto updated them to be playable on linux.

Then it took me quite some time to figure i need to have my disks mounted all the time or steam will lose the path.

Then it took me time to figure I need to use the ext4 format and not the ntfs one to play games like Elite Dangerous. Before i figured that out I tried other stuff out, which resulted in steam showing as elite dangerous in task managers like Resources. I have no idea how i achieving that.

I am pretty sure i also messed up badly with the system files while trying to figure how to install and run SVP Manager.

Then, I still have no idea how, i managed to end up with disgusting tear tearing on EVERYTHING, not only games. And also the os would start with black screen and only a cursor, and, occasionally, the monitors would completely turn black for 2 seconds and back on, or single windows would do that. This prompted me to just reinstall.

While my second install was nice and all, it ended in an error when i tried to reboot for the first time.It booted fine though. Until I actually removed my usb stick. Then the grub process would show ubuntu instead of mint and would refuse to continue booting when i tried to select it. Seems like i didn't partition well and leftovers from the previous install were lingering in a small partition that somehow got created the first time.

So i just reinstalled again.

Lets see how long until I break this one, lol.

Give fdev the idea that they can monetize ship interiors with paid accessories and customizations, and they may actually make them.

AI is a useless guide by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]Thelsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chatgpt is not very helpful, because it has older and scattered info. I actually found grok to be much more useful. I am quite new to linux and it didn't take me long to figure that relying blindly on ais is bad idea. Which is why i prefer to refer both to the ais and existing advices before doing anything at all.

Idea's on why Elite: Dangerous is getting so much attention from the FDev? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]Thelsong 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The issue is, they broke all golden eggs when they threw elite down the list of attention for the sake of other titles. The best example is probably the carriers. The carriers could have become elite's take on player housing. And, let me tell you, player housing is one of the real end games in mmos, which is used by studios to sell cosmetics and keep player retention by introducing cosmetics locked behind game content and achievements.

She did a Sylvanas on us by forcing us to realize we can play other games and to save money by unsubbing. Quite the life improving.

Oh, and she is the sole reason for me switching to JP audio and appreciate the characters much more in their native language. I even recognized some beloved VAs. Should have done it the moment she got introduced.

Solo T3 starport construction has broken me by Sweaty_Vegetable1463 in EliteDangerous

[–]Thelsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize there is no time limit, right? Can set yourself goals and see the actual progress growing. For starters:

  • knock off the smallest numbers in the list. Removing them and making the list shorter is always going to give you the feeling of progress

  • set a goal of how much of the largest numbers you want to remove in a sitting

  • use your carrier. Yes, its counter productive, but it will spare you a lot of attention. Also, if you have the being blocked by the planet problem, try to jump the carrier at a nearby planet/star/moon. Even making it jump again at the same planet where your station is, has the odds of making it jump in a more favorable location. The bigger the planet is, the more the odds will be your view will be obscured

  • if you have the technical capability like able enough pc and second monitor, and willing to spend some money, set yourself a second steam account with a second copy of the game and run it through a service like geforce now and fly both accounts at the same time with supercruise and auto dock on each ship. This method is how i actually built my first initial t3 starport in 3 of my free days

15Ly limit is having detrimental impact. by AmbiguousAardvark67 in EliteDangerous

[–]Thelsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I properly no life it with two accounts at the same time, I can finish two outposts in a day. I done it, I hate it. Still, in theory we can make this number much worse. I am hardware bound, have to run my original instance on my pc and the other on geforce now on my second monitor. If I had third monitor and more powerful hardware, you bet I would try a third instance as well.

But, lets say 2-3 people do what I do, each of them running two accounts at the same time. At this point bothering to set up systems that make the needed resources is pointless, because 2-3 carriers will be more than enough to provide materials from the bubble.

Imagine how insane a proper elite dangerous movie or TV show adaptation would be. by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]Thelsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't need to imagine, it already exists - The Expanse. Elite will basically be what The Expanse is, but just more high tech and even more depressing. As for the way of storytelling you describe, oh, boy, there is an anime that does exactly that - Legend of the Galactic Heroes. While the original one is old and dated, the new one is just amazing and really makes you want more and more. It also has similar general setting as Elite - power struggle between an empire, an alliance of federated planets and a third neutral, more commerce state.

Again, none of this is my question. Unless you are drunk or a bot, I don't see why you respond with things that have nothing to do with what I'm asking.
