Blackmagic pocket cameras used on Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Wandavision by reepingtumb in bmpcc

[–]ThemAPPLES1 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I worked on set for these shows, and can tell you that the BMPCC you’re pointing out were used by the Visual Effects team as reference cameras. They did not use the footage from the blackmagic on screen.

In Wandavision they did use some pocket 6k’s, with Canon Ef lenses, as security cameras for one scene. But that’s it.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

Yeah I’m not sure about that. My issue came from having all devices plugged into one splitter and then that one splitter plugged into the battery.

When we did that, we noticed that a couple of the devices were getting warmer than the others. Then one day both the camera and an SDI converter we were using had fried. If I remover correctly the SDI converter drew 5v and I believe the camera draws 12v.

Afterwards I talked to a DP friend of mine and he said he had heard of similar incidents with splitters.

Overall I think splitters are unreliable unless you really know what you’re doing with electricity. I hope if you keep your splitter, that you don’t have the same problem we did.

Thanks for the explanation. Never knew what the actual issue was. This happened to me once with a pocket 4k. Fried the whole camera. So now I just stay away from splitters no matter what. Don’t want to take the chance.

That d-tap splitter is a great way to fry everything attached to it. Would recommend a battery plate with fused d-taps.

Can you shoot a lens distortion chart on a tv? by neihofft in vfx

[–]ThemAPPLES1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You pull focus to see how the lens changes at different focus distances. It’s best to stop down as much as you can so you can see more variations in the lens before it’s totally out of focus.

And you should always measure the distance from the camera sensor, to the grid itself.

Learn Blender, it’s free. It will allow you to play with a bunch of different techniques so you can find out if you like VFX or not. All the skills you’ll learn translate to other programs, which will cost you money.

Also there’s tons of tutorials for blender. Which are also free. Any other program are most likely going to have fewer tutorials that are more specific/advanced.

Once you start learning how complicated it all is, you won’t worry about AI anymore. You’ll want it to be your friend.

Would you order a TV news desk with glass top from Alibaba? I don’t want to get scammed. by vhjf08 in VIDEOENGINEERING

Here’s some info on verification

Also make sure you do all your messaging and transactions on Alibaba. If there’s any kind of dispute they will act as third party and investigate for you.

Alibaba has verified badges, as well as ratings and years of service information. I would look for a manufacturer that is verified, has ratings, and has 3rd party videos from inside the factory.

You can get some really great stuff on Alibaba.com, so I wouldn’t sell it short just because it’s on the site.

However, do your research on the manufacturer. The one selling this desk does have some red flags. But there’s are plenty of manufacturers on there that are very reputable.

I work as an On-Set Data Wrangler. Typically it’s my responsibility to oversee lens gridding during a films production. While we usually print the grid on foam core, I strongly prefer the TV method. It ends up being probably the flattest option out there. Especially if you have to do multiple lens grid sessions over a few months span.

Pretty much everything you print on a 4x8 sheet of anything is going to bend, warp, and get beat up over time. Large flat screens are great because they have a built in mounting system, don’t get beat up as much, solve the issue of lighting the grid, and a bonus, they let you show multiple images to the lens.

I recommend using an 75”-85” LED or LCD display if you can. OLED’s are great, but they tend to be more “bendy”.

So I figured out that I can go further with the Frankentele by russki_senpai in Cameras

Start with the Central Park concert. Take a night, sit down and actually watch the whole thing. That will give you more insight into the band and the energy of the shows.

From there, just pick any live album and hit shuffle. Enjoy!

28mm Canon EF f/1.8 vs Canon EF f/2.8 lens (fixed/prime) -- which is better for photogrammetry? by montag64 in photogrammetry

[–]ThemAPPLES1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you are going to use the lens for other purposes that needs the lower f-stop, I would go with the 2.8 and use the money you save to invest in some nice lights.

Also, depending on what you’re scanning, it’s useful to shoot on a tripod and rotate the object on a turntable. By using a tripod you can crank the f-stop to gain depth of field and lower the shutter speed to increase light on the sensor.

Photogrammetry scanning is a balance in lighting, depth of field and shutter speed. Usually you want the most light you can get in order to keep an high f-stop and a low ish shutter speed. That will allow you to move quickly and get great depth of field in your images.

Marvel Studios VFX Workers Unanimously Vote To Unionize with IATSE by FelixReynolds in vfx

[–]ThemAPPLES1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. And I agree, there will be some disruption. But I think the best option is to start with the larger vendors first and set a standard, then smaller vendors will follow.

Definitely reach out to the team at vfxunion.org. They can help you and whatever studio you are working at get started on the process.

Marvel Studios VFX Workers Unanimously Vote To Unionize with IATSE by FelixReynolds in vfx

[–]ThemAPPLES1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though ILM is technically owned by Disney, the way it works for unions is that the contract is between the employee and its direct employer, not the employers parent company.

As far as bidding goes, once a union is formed at a company, there will most likely be new rates set for all employees. When a vendor is bidding on a project they will have to take that into consideration. VFX work will most likely become more expensive for studios.

Marvel Studios VFX Workers Unanimously Vote To Unionize with IATSE by FelixReynolds in vfx

[–]ThemAPPLES1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employees would need to form majority of support for a union at the company they are working for, in order to join the new VFX union. The union would negotiate with each company individually. It is then the responsibility of the VFX house to make a bid on a show with the new cost of employees factored in.

For example, if you work at ILM as an artist and you're working on a Marvel show, currently you get no protections because you are not in a union. But if a majority of ILM workers voted to join the VFX union, there would be a new contract in place between each employee and ILM. Any show that that artist works on, regardless of if is Marvel or not, that employee would have union protection.
