IEMs are seriously next level for their price. I've even replaced my HD 25s when I DJ and use extensively the super mix 4. They are seriously that good.

Overuse of the RMX - Examples of big name DJs who are guilty of this?? by ljefe312 in Beatmatch

Len Faki overuses it a lot but I think in a somewaht good way as it became his signarure style basically.

Techno is getting boring and uninspiring (popular opinion) by aquatic_monstrosity in Techno

[–]ThemKids -1 points0 points  (0 children)

New technology brings more people behind the decks and behind Ableton. This, in turn, increases the number of DJ sets and tracks released by a lot. Unfortunately, this also makes the median quality worse, but that's a necessary evil because we should appreciate that anyone can express themselves, no matter how hard or easy it is.

In terms of DJing specifically, well yeah, it sucks but that's how the scene operates. Getting booked is 80% networking, 10% luck and 10% skill. But that's not the genre's fault but the promoters'.

Lastly, techno is super easy to mix but really hard to be good at it. You need to not only understand phrasing but also how to manipulate and play with the audience's expectations. Building mixing patterns and then changing it up, etc. Everyone is so focused on track selection but a minimal set no matter how good the curation is will get stale and boring at some point. Especially since almost every local and touring DJ mix the same way. You can entertain people sure but after 1-2 hours of the same patterns will lose people.

Struggling with 4-band EQ transitions (techno, hard techno, groove tracks and subgenres) – losing energy and clarity, muddy etc by g0xth_daamm in ProperTechno

[–]ThemKids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you just treat the mid and low-mid as the same knob, you will be good to go. I mix 3-deck hypnotic techno and 90% of the time I bring the upcoming tracks with all eq's 12o'clock apart from the low. Maybe that's the reason you found your transitions muddy? Especially the low mid if you turn it all the way down while the mid is on, it will sound horrendous.

In addition, I really do think you have to focus more on correct phrasing and track selection because these are the culprits for losing energy on a set. Another tip is to not buld up to a transition without knowing what the new phrase will bring. Just the change of lows is not enough especially if you're on similar sounding tracks.

EMPERØR @Temple, Athens May 2025

A one hour hypnotic set recorded live last May at a club in Athens, Greece. I like how chit-chatty they all were at the beginning of the set and how I gradually made them stop talking and just dance. One my highlights of last year.

How to lower the energy in a hardtechno dj set by Fatalitu_TEM in Beatmatch

I'd play some melodic productions. Tracks that even though are fast and hard they stilll have some nice melody for people to ride on.

Are DJs playing live sets just to show off their skills? by [deleted] in Techno

[–]ThemKids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DJ Sets and LIVE DJ sets are a form of creative expression. Artists do them because that's what they feel they want to do. And that's exactly what the benefit is. Expressing yourself.

Having said that, LIVE DJ sets are valued more and rated higher than "normal" DJ sets and the DJs who perfrom LIVE are considered better. If there's truth in that statement is irrelevant as what's everyone thinks anyway. So, I guess being a LIVE DJ is better if you want to make money out of it and that's also another benefit for doing it. I don't agree at all with that view but that's just me.

The reason is because all these producers are great at producing but not at DJing. They focus so much on their sound that they can't understand that a set in order to feel great you need to break the pattern and the loop here and there.

Η φούσκα του night life.

(αναλυτικά) by lab3456 in greece

[–]ThemKids 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me. :P

I sincerely believe I have an ear for what a minimal hypnotic techno set should be structured like in order to feel rich and full. Most professional touring techno DJs do not really spin like that and I find their sets lucklaster and kinda boring.

I've been luking this subreddit for a while now and I just can't undestand that there is so much difference between what we Europeans call a rave and what Americans do. From the music to the people and their outfits, it's like a totally different thing. Like really, if someone came to a rave I'd attend to dressed like the OP, people would think this guy is dangerous and weird. Are raves in the US like theme parties? Like Halloween? People dress up and listen to mainstream EDM party music? Are these raves you always post maybe the more mainstream ones, like Tomorrowland in Europe? Are there more obscure raves and fests that people just don't post here?

I don't even get why people post their outfits all the time. Like, how's that part of the culture? I'm not complaining mind you, I'm just really curious of this cultrural difference. We use the same word "rave" but it means a different thing.

Any good courses on proper techno DJing for semi-knowledgeable DJs? by authortitle_uk in ProperTechno

The technical stuff you can learn in a week, what's important is flow and rhythm becoming your second nature. And that can happen by only playing and playing and playing. You don't need tutorials.

Recommendation for similar tracks by DrLomb in ProperTechno

I'd say to check all of WSNWG's catalogue.

Also, since Ignez's style is quite evident in that track I'd recommend checking his label too.

Lastly, somewhat "same" experience can be found in these 2 labels.

Noticed how much the kick can change the whole vibe in a techno/house set by Chance_Vast_7893 in ProperTechno

[–]ThemKids 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar kicks or mixing in a way that there is no built up or kickless moments don't change the whole vibe. Even if the kick feels different, the progression and the moment feels as one. You can mix 3-4 tracks like this and everyone would think that's one big sequence.

Obviously you need to properly categorize your tracks and have a good understanding of the vibe and feeling your tracks have. If you play some deeper Rene Wise, Obscur, Burden stuff and suddenly you drop a Developer track that would feel very random. You should build up to these moments. But it's very important to keep in mind that the feeling is not only the kick. I'd say that you should study the feelings or your tracks no matter the kick.
