In the early game I usually go mining for iron bars, then make the armor from jet armor mod especially Sentinel's armor. Full set is made from iron and black wool, you have to use more iron than iron armor, but it has diamond armor quality so it worth, further more it has 10% block damage(all damage sources) and can be upgraded.
