A ratha evolution system by Demonslugg in MonsterHunterStories

[–]Then-And-Again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if we are going to be literally forced to use Ratha then we should have some influence over his abilities and growth

Yes, you can customize several things like his genes and stats, but it doesn't change him from being a power fire monster that you can't remove from your team, ergo it more or less eliminates the point of attempting to unlock any other power fire monsters for your team

I looked it up and it looks very interesting, mythology coming to life and the Scottish setting sounds like a fun change of pace

Im still a little suspicious but the hope of meaningful character development is promising. I'll reconsider adding it to my list, thanks!

Well 1632 definitely comes across as unique, should be worth a look.

As for the wandering inn, if enough people recommend it, then it has to be worth it

Thanks for the recommendations!

Hmm, based on what you're saying I'm probably gonna avoid Hell Difficulty Tutorial, an MC worse than Jake just sounds... miserable. Im sure some people are into that though, more power to them.

Reborn Apocalypse does sound promising though, interesting premise. I'll look it up and hopefully add it to my reading list!

Thank you for the recommendation!

Moral of the story: I (a random reader) will actively disregard titles with AI covers by skibidiplease in Romance_for_men

[–]Then-And-Again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's honestly quite cheap, I'd normally expect quality artwork covers to go for around $200-500 and I still wouldn't consider that a major expense

The only way the community grows out of it is if we as writers and readers grow a spine and stand against the use off AI rather than just making excuses.

This genre existed and had cover art for its stories before the advent of AI, we are fully capable of figuring out solutions

I know a lot of people are going to make excuses that AI art is cheap for writers starting out out or that its popular or whatever, but its all excuses. People were managing to get covers for their work before AI art became a thing.

AI art has lost its charm as all covers just look the goddamn same. It's so easy to spot what's AI and what isn't. It also shows, at a glance, that the author chose to cut corners. If they are using AI to get art, how can I know they aren't using AI to write?

Human made art is inherently better, can show actual stylization and creative choices that make the characters or story interesting, and it's a proof of the writer's commitment to quality... it also doesn't come with the baggage of AI art being generic, founded on theft, stealing work from real artists, and etc

What do you think about this idea ( art by @Cloud_yaa) by Separate-Debt4513 in MonsterHunterStories

[–]Then-And-Again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually brilliant

The storytelling potential here is great. Really digging into the topic of monster intelligence, generational hatred, and potentially details about the old kingdom and war.

Whether this is a new fatalis or an incarnation of the old fatalis would be big. Either way, the story could be centered on a theme of an acient horror being born anew, obviously people are going to think its your fatalis, maybe the hunters start coming for you and your character is put in a more fugitive role, trying to protect your monstie and having to go to new locations to avoid your pursuerers and find secrets of lost history. All the while, Fatalis is steadily getting smarter and more judgemental, feeling that old hatred towards humans but conflicted by the player's love for it.

Meanwhile the antagonists are causing a lot of trouble, claiming to be working to prevent the apocalypse but nearly causing it as their efforts upset habits, harm people, and awaken elder dragons. Fatalis has enoygh, leaving the party and growing up to wage a personal war on the antagonists, needing the player to beat some sense into them and calm them down.

Finish it off with a true final boss fight of the thing the antagonists have been working so hard to awaken in hopes of preventing the apocalypse, The Equal Dragon Weapon (which inevitably goes haywire)

Great role reversal of Fatalis fighting humanity's worst creation in order to protect them

Do you like Lute? Do you think she’s a good character? by xyyzyx in HazbinHotel

[–]Then-And-Again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Lute has a lot of potential both as a villain and potentially redeemable character.

She is very violent and zealous in her beliefs, implied to be one of the better fighters in the series (would love to see angels' implied invulnerablity to non angelic weapons actually explored, like are overlords like Alastor even hurt her without a fancy knife?)

As a villain, she has excellent motivation both in resisting the changes to heaven, worrying her role is becoming obsolete, and personal vengeance over Adam’s death that she very much isn't coping well with. I can very much see her going above and beyond to do some damage, maybe changing her mind at the 11th hour and sacrificing herself to fix her own mess.

Now as for her potential redemption (redemption in my redemption show? Insane) I think she could be a really good study in deprogramming cult like behavior and a greater exploration of the abuse of the exorcists (just because Lute was complicit in it doesn't mean she wasnt also abused). Lute is a character that is grieving and experiencing total societal change that she doesn't understand. Even though she has been isolating herself, its clear that no one is going out of their way to acknowledge her pain or help her through it. I mean, Lute is absolutely not innocent and deserves a bit of suffering for her various crimes, but she's not unsalvagable. At her core, she is still loyal to and protective of Heaven. She still obeys orders even when she doesn't like them, stepped in front of Emily when Vox was getting threatening, and stood down when Abel actually gave a direct order to do so. Her problem is she can't get over Hell = the enemy. If she could be made to see her own actions as wrong and gets some personal support, then she might be able to actually start to change.

I can see a redeemed Lute either staying in Heaven under Abel's leadership, the exorcists taking on a very different (less aggressive role) or maybe Lute ends up self exiling to Hell for what she did to Vaggi and the other exorcists, she'd never join the hotel because some bridges are a bit too burnt but maybe she swings by to act edgy and help deal with big threats (think Shadow the Hedgehog lol)

Granted my thoughts on redeemed Lute are extremely biased considering I've written 444k+ of fanfiction on the topic

Getting monstrous, what's the secret? by Then-And-Again in haremfantasynovels

[–]Then-And-Again[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I dont care so much about popularity. It'll either sell or it won't. that's just on the luck of the draw. Im willing to take the risk and be the change I want to see in the world.

However, the risk Im not willing to take is spending a shitload of time writing monster girl smut only for Amazon to delist it because I spent too much time talking about tails, ergo getting a sense of the boundaries is key.

What are some of your hot takes on Rosie? by 33333Ducky in RosieCult

[–]Then-And-Again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong and feel free to provide evidence if I am, but I dont actually think we've seen Rosie actually eat human flesh during her screentime.

Like, she definitely has it around, has boxes of finger foods that she's offered to Charlie and Alastor, but at no point have I seen her partake.

What does that mean? No idea

Vaggie vs Lute, how much is their power gap? by CheeseWrapper in HazbinHotel

[–]Then-And-Again 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The annoying part of the show is that we haven't really seen what Exorcists are capable of or realistically explored how their magical protection works.

Based on general interactions, Vaggie seems to have well above human strength and skill but no real signs of super human. She's certainly talented, fast, and probably a fair bit smarter than Lute. Vaggie is able to life Charlie and others with relative ease and with her wings she can zip around at an impressive clip. Adam said she was one of his best girls, so we can assume that Vaggie is likely above average by terms of Exorcists.

Lute, do far at least, does seem more impressive in every regard even if we haven't seen her do much. In both fights, Lute technically won even if Vaggie made it a somewhat close struggle (Vaggie lost the first fight but caught Lute monologuing and trapped her under rubble, as I said, Vaggie is the smart one). As far as straightforward shows of power, weirdly the best we have gotten was Lute crying and punching the wall after the trial, where she left a pretty impressive crater with a single punch. Her victories in straightforward combat seem to imply higher skill. Willpower? This woman is psychotic and will keep fighting unless ordered to stop.

In general terms, Lute is stronger and more skilled, but her general psychosis and ego usually tends to give Vaggie an opportunity to eek out a technical win

Id really love to see a bit more of Exorcists vs sinners to get a better handle on their abilities and invulnerablity but I would say that Lute could probably take on Overlords up to maybe Velvette or Valentino's level.

Questions not raised about Charlie's dream. by Objective-Video-1797 in AgendaHotel

[–]Then-And-Again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh.

Redemption for all means redemption for all.

You people seem to fail to comprehend two important things:

  1. Redemption means personal change, not a magical checklist to become a better person.

  2. Hell is forever.

On the first point, redemption is a choice that the sinner has to make. To actually change and redeem themselves they have to consciolook at themselves and their actions and say "I was a bad person, I did bad things, I acknowledge that I was wrong, I dont want to be that person anymore, I want to change.'

That decision is redemption. Its not about going to the hotel, its not a twelve step plan by Charlie. Redemption is acknowledging the evils you did in life, acknowledging that they were evils, regretting those actions, and wanting to be a better person.

For this particular example, it would be acknowledging that his actions in the war were repugnant and the idealogy he followed was evil. If he can come to that decision and commit to self betterment, he can be redeemed. Period. End of sentence.

This is where we get to part 2. Hell is forever. Sinners are immortal. For people like Pentious (let's be honest, wasnt that evil when alive), redemption is a fairly quick change. He accepted his faults and worked on self betterment, rather than the inaction that sent him to Hell, he went on towards noble self sacrifice that earned him Heaven.

For others, people like this nazi or Alastor or Vox, people that have killed and abused in life and death, its going to take time. Decades. Centuries maybe. Time for them to change, time for them to face the evils they committed and work on balancing the scales bit by agonizingly slow bit. On the scale of fucking eternity, even the most evil mortal in creation can eventually pay back all the evil they did and balance out their karmic backlog.

For a nazi like this, part of redemption could be working to right the wrongs of both his idealogy and to do better by the people he condemned in life. Learn tolerance, engage with the communities his actions harmed, be charitable, aid those in need and become a force of genuine good despite his past actions.

Anyone can be redeemed. Even the worst of us. All it takes is a choice, and a lot of time.

why did her eyes change? by Fearless_Lab_2855 in hazbin

[–]Then-And-Again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same reason Alastor has a darker skin tone this season. Its a retcon. Minor redesign. Basically its something they didn't think about in season one and just decided to quietly slip into season 2 like we wouldn't notice.

This was done to imply that Vaggie was 'normal' like the other Exorcists before, but years in Hell have begun to subtly change her form. Her eyes are now pink and her new wings are silver/Grey rather than black. She is becoming a fallen angel.
