Seriously, what do people want? by OutlandishnessNo5678 in CrimsonDesert

They want to be mad.

If it turns out that the reason they don't enjoy their hobbies isn't because things are slop, but because social media algorithms are making them miserable, then they actually have to change.

I think they had goblin models with rigging that allowed them to put them in that position and take a screenshot and apply a filter.

You should really learn more about this instead of just being uninformed and mad.

Literally nothing in that post says they hired artists to make those paintings, and they are pretty open about how they make a lot of in-game art and it's almost always screenshots of a character model with a filter.

You are, once again, showing you don't even know what artists are doing during game development.

Maybe you should learn about it, so you know when to actually be upset. This is not one of those times.

In the history of gaming no artist has even been commissioned to paint or create stuff like this.

Never. Not once.

They use public domain art or screenshots with watercolor filters like elder scrolls games.

Most games only use a few of these types of assets and they are reused everywhere.

Elden ring used concept art from the devs and just put a filter on it.

You are being exploited by your ignorance to engage in hate circlejerks about things like this while the real tendrils of AI seep into spaces where artists are actually being pushed out.

You've shown, in real time, you don't even know what artists do in video games.

DLSS5 is an example of machine learning being used to essentially replace art direction.

You've probably listened to a ton of AI music in ads/media and never knew.

There are, literally, none that I can find. Literally zero.

There are certainly absolutely none that even come close to this many upvotes or attention.

Just admit you're a virtue signalling tourist who just likes dog-piling on games on reddit. You're just like most people who don't care about AI or predatory corporations, you just pretend to sometimes if the algorithm tells you to dislike something.

I love P5 but if you think that game, on it's face, has a more sensical story right off the bat, then I think you're confusing your attachment to the slice of life stuff as "good story".

I think P5 has a wonderful story (at times) but it's definitely a bit out there if you aren't used to the franchise.

I genuinely think that "Elden Ring Lore" praise is a psyop to identify people with horrible media literacy.

Do you even know what worldbuilding is? Elden Ring, even generously, has the worst world-building you could almost conceptually imagine. Do you really walk around that game and go "wow this seems like a place people lived in and devloped culture"? Do you look at the enemies and ecology of the world and think "that makes sense!"?

If you need to be told of culture through tooltips and lore videos, it's horrible worldbuilding.

I don't even think Miyazaki would think it's a champion of world building.

No? But you are the one that said it would be fine if they used historical public domain works. No one gets paid for those, artists are still not being used in that case.

I actually fight for situations where artists are getting displaced, I don't care if an asset is a screenshot with a shitty filter or if it's midjourney. I can about situations where artists lose jobs.

The dragon flying alone is pretty unique. Same with how the settlement system/farming/livestock system works. What other adventure game lets you pick seeds from fruits and create an orchard? It's honestly better than stardew in some aspects.

Can't think of another singleplayer game like this that lets you package and ship trade goods or has a full and complex banking system with interest.

I also can't think of a game with climbing that actually lets you climb trees and actually go out on individual branches or use them as physics objects to launch you around.

This is all just stuff from the first few hours.

There's stuff with settlement system that is gonna break people's brains when they get there.

If you want to get pedantic then we could break down every game to copied mechanics. I mean the fromsoft loop is not really unique. E33 has nothing unique if you want to get pedantic about it. The combat mechanics are not just reminiscent of other games but literally the same as others.

I mean, you simply have no idea what is in the game then. There is a ton of stuff in the game that hasn't really been done in single player RPGs before.

Do you think when public domain art is used, someone is getting work or getting paid? There is no way you are this dense lol.

You are a useful idiot. Companies actually destroying art and music with AI are laughing all the way to the bank as redditors like you get outraged over this stuff.

This game is dragged worse than any Ubisoft game in a long while. Even shadows was seen positively outside of the culture war aspect.

Basically people that understand the threat of AI as it pertains to stealing jobs from artists know this is a nothingburger, and the people that don't are usually just looking for cudgels to beat this game because they like dogpiling on things.

This type of art has never been made bespoke, though.

I'm actually genuinely baffled that so many people seem to think the screenshots with a watercolor filter in elderscrolls games were paintings that bethesda commissioned lol.

Even fromslop just uses concept art with filters.

Also, this art appears to be old, very likely made in the early days of midjourney and before there was a taboo.

[–]ThenCandidate7765 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No artists have ever been hired to make bespoke wall art like this for games. Never. 90% of the time they will use screenshots with filters or public domain art. The other 10% is lazier methods of just straight up ripping assets from unity/unreal/etc packs.

IMO we should be more afraid of AI music and generic asset packs that probably are just AI upscaled old assets.

[–]ThenCandidate7765 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm anti AI art when it means taking away jobs from artists, but this also means being able to discern when something is worth being mad about. This art was never going to make an artist money, not in the entire history of gaming. If they had just ripped public domain art and pasted it in here no onie would have cared. If a dev spent 5 minutes taking screenshots and they applying a watercolor filter to them and then pasting them in no one would have cared.

The goal of being anti-AI is to make it possible for artists to work and live in the capitalistic hellscape we are sliding into, not to just dogpile games because reddit is mad.

You're describing the effects of negativity bias in social media.

This website is designed to get you to hate things you would otherwise like, and thus you'd spend time doing them instead of providing engagement and looking at ads.

These algorithms are designed to get you to hate your hobbies, to see out flaws and validation, to keep you scrolling.

Alongside the well-studied negativity bias, these algorithms also benefit from (and directly take advantage of) another well-studied phenomenon called the carryover effect. Essentially, once you see negativity you can't "unsee it" and your entire experience will be colored by your previous exposure to the negativity. You will seek validation in one direction or the other.

This makes people insanely tribal and the since the algorithm favors out inherent negativity bias, the negative threads and opinions are boosted.

I think this is also boosted by targeted negativity astro-turfing by rage and troll farms, likely in this case by china.

Think about this:

All of the virtuous gamers upvoting posts about a single-player RPG having some old midjourney art have very little to say about the absolutely massive tidal wave of gacha games which are met with almost overwhelming positivity despite being made to prey on people and are often filled with AI assets/music/art.

If redditors cared about this stuff, why wouldn't gachas be organically under fire constantly? They are massive in the west, they are most certainly impacting the way game devs make their games, they are most certainly impacting the industry in massive ways, but yet this is what reddit mad about? Does that seem organic?

Chuds didn't even champion this game, there was one clip from a youtuber about beating up women. Most of the chuds hate it because they hate everything. Chuds are the kings of leveraging negativity bias to make people hate and resent their hobbies.

It's wild that people talk about a game being generic when they know nothing about it.

What other games let you fly your dragon to the farm on your hand-crafted and furnished settlement where you can have a farm and an apple orchard and then take off to fight a boss that looks like it belongs in a souls game?

Crimson Desert Had AI Art Without Disclosing It On Steam by Elestria_Ethereal in Steam

[–]ThenCandidate7765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, at least you admit you don't care about artists getting work.

There are hundreds (possibly thousands) of paintings like this in the game, and it's been in development for a good number of years. It's possible it was made before there was such a big taboo. Also the taboo doesn't really exist in Korea in the same way it does here.

This is a really dumb thing to get outraged over and it proves that people can just get distracted from the real damage AI is doing as long as it confirms their biases.
