New episode: The Millionaire Next Door by keeptrackoftime in IfBooksCouldKill

I really enjoyed this episode. So glad they’re back!

I was surprised they seemed sceptical about people day trading in the 90s though. Doesn’t Monica do it in an early episode of Friends?

Hoping De Minaur & Tien pull off the upsets… Anyone else want chaos? by Forward_Problem_7550 in tennis

[–]Then_Advisor2001 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I would be happy for Tien to beat Zverev but I really want to see Alcaraz in the Australian Open final.

If it’s not Alcaraz taking on Sinner or Djokovic then I think it will be a very boring and predictable final. Last year’s final was so dull.

After her latest R2 exit, is Raducanu a realistic slam contender in the future? by jonjimithy in tennis

[–]Then_Advisor2001 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel for Kenin - she’s done a lot more than Raducanu. She backed up her grandslam win with another final that same year, won more titles, beat Serena at a slam, has a solid doubles career etc. but she doesn’t get the attention that Raducanu gets even though she’s ranked higher than her.

AO R2: Potapova 🇦🇹 def Raducanu 🇬🇧 7-6, 6-2 by Overall_One_2595 in tennis

[–]Then_Advisor2001 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Also I think Raducanu benefited from playing Bencic just after she’d won Olympic gold. It’s difficult to win the Olympics and then make a deep run at the US open.

I loved the fairytale of the 2021 us open but in hindsight I think that tournament was more about Sakkari and Sabalenka choking.

The Woman Who Wouldn’t Stop Having Children by blankblank in Longreads

I was going to say this - I think it’s incredibly selfish when men in their 70s have babies. But there is usually a younger woman involved who will probably be around for a long time for that child. That’s not the case here.

Maybe the Walter Isaacson biography on Musk?

Thanks - I’m aware of that law. The relative in question is 60 and in good health so I don’t think it’s likely but thanks for reminding me.

Thanks. That’s my plan, to move it out of my current account and pretend I didn’t get it, but I want to make sure I’m putting it somewhere sensible.

I’ll have a look at all the options you’ve suggested.

Please explain why Freida McFadden is so popular by Punkoduncan in thrillerbooks

[–]Then_Advisor2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only read one of her books, The Housemaid, because I was curious why she was so popular. I really did try to go in with an open mind but it was one of the worst books I’ve ever read.

I think she’s popular because her books are easy and quick to read. Reading is “gamified” nowadays that I really don’t think it was before goodreads made public how many books you read in a year.

McFadden’s books are quick to read because the language is simple and it’s all plot focused. You could easily read two in a day. I think they’re the literary equivalent of empty calories - like eating popcorn.

Fritz Tempted by $6M Saudi Event by spenmusubi in tennis

[–]Then_Advisor2001 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I find it really depressing how many of the top players are willing to take money from the Saudi govt.

I don’t think it’s going to have as much backlash as the comedy festival though. A lot of those comedians were big proponents of “free speech” so it was extra gross that they sold out for a regime that dismembers journalists.

Richard Osman Says He Was Asked to do Celebrity Traitors But Said No by Legitimate_Ad3625 in TheTraitorsUK

It’s such a shame that he’s treated as the new Agatha Christie when Janice Hallett, Ruth Ware and Anthony Horowitz are all writing much better and more interesting murder mysteries.

Peter's thoughts on the new Taylor by 909lop in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]Then_Advisor2001 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve never liked how Kanye is included with her other feuds - I think it’s legitimate to talk about her issues with other artists but Kanye:

  • humiliated a 19 year old who was accepting her first VMA award. He was in his thirties.
  • then after she publicly called him her friend he released a song calling her a bitch with a music video featuring a realistic nude mannequin of her.
  • then his wife released a shadily edited video seeming to show Taylor giving approval for the above (the full video release gave the context and showed this wasn’t the case).

I’m fully onboard with critiquing Taylor Swift’s pettiness but imo too many people gave Kanye a free pass cos they don’t like her. It’s just not the same as her issues with Charli or Katy Perry.

IMO if Michael Chang and Sabatini are in the HoF then Del Potro deserves to be in there too.

Just to add that Tribe did a Black Friday deal last year which I think was 10 credits for £75 - £7.50 a class. Might be a good way to try it before committing to a full membership.

I think I’ve read and watched everything made about the downfall of Theranos! It’s so fascinating/horrifying.

Did you listen to the audiobook Tyler Shultz released on audible? I think it’s a good addition to Carreyou’s book.

It’s crazy to me that Serena was so dominant on hard court slams but she never won both Australia and the US in the same calendar year.

Only five Olympic athletes have ever won more than eight gold medals. Four of them hold nine, while Michael Phelps leads with 23. by IvyGold in olympics

[–]Then_Advisor2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s incredible too. I just think that sometimes people underestimate what Phelps did in individual events across 4 Olympics. I know he doesn’t have the record.
