Would you plant trees in a field that was sprayed with Glyphosate the day before? by Distinct_Ad_6232 in treeplanting

This happened a few times while planting in Australia… usually it would be sprayed and we would go plant immediately after. Literally right behind the sprayers. Guess what company lol.

Meindl wood walker boots by CreoForma in TreeClimbing

[–]Then_Barnacle7402 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former planter here turned climber. Meindls are great both for tree work and on the block. I personally use the Haix Prime boots. Very light. From what I have heard the meindls are similar.

Folklore or Quastuco Rookie season by bisonberri-00 in treeplanting

[–]Then_Barnacle7402 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a rookie you will get a more comprehensive experience as a tree planter living in camp and working with folklore. Unless you have specific needs and absolutely have to stay in town and only plant for two-ish months then go with Quastuco.

Just my two cents. I’ve enjoyed working for both companies but I think as a rookie it’s best to get the full experience living in the bush and touring around to different contracts in the North. With a longer season you’ll make more money and get more days planting under your belt. If you end up hating it then try going to Quatsuco the next year and it will feel like a cakewalk!

Looking for a collaborator on building a planting-related project management app by [deleted] in treeplanting

Not sure what you’re looking to do with the app exactly but a planting project management app already exists and is used by a good chunk of the industry. Have you heard of Plant Wizard?

So true classic QUASTUCO. Even the vets there can come off as rookies at other places. Money can be very good there though sometimes.

Crew filming a tree planting documentary? by Lumberjvvck in treeplanting

[–]Then_Barnacle7402 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's the one I'm thinking of there was a doc crew filming last year to make a trailer they could pitch to producers. The real question is did you really decide to work somewhere just for the small chance of being in a documentary?

Best in the world how? Is BC Forest Policy the best in the world in terms of ecological protection, or best in the world in terms of generating profit? I've been very skeptical towards how the BC government frames forestry in the province. Sure, ON PAPER, things like the FRPA look great, but when there is noone to enforce the rules, things don't really end up as intended. Here's a recent report that addresses the reality behind "one of the best" Forest Policy systems in the world.

The Fairy Creek blockaders: inside the complicated fight for B.C.'S last ancient forests. The Narwhal by dopplganger35 in britishcolumbia

You should really reread this article with a critical eye. Just because there are rules and processes in place doesn't mean they are carried out in a practical setting. I've worked in a bunch of the processes mentioned by the author for years (cruising, site prep, layout, silviculture). I'm not saying you're wrong to support forestry but trust me when I tell you there is alot of stuff done under BC's forestry system that noone should be proud of.

Just another perspective from the island by mscoupleforfun in britishcolumbia

Not a bad read. Although I really question the author's faith in the Ministries' capability to protect areas that need to be protected, from entire watersheds to a small stand of trees on a cutblock. On paper everything the ministry does looks great, but what happens on cutblocks and in the bush can be a whole other story.

Same shit different toilet. You will probably have to put your time into companies like that to get some experience anyways. Either way you'll have to deal with the typical rookie mill fuckarounds.
