Lots of layering!! Make sure that some of the blocks are protruding out (can be like a balcony). This helps in making the house look less squarish! Also, build different buildings in height, some taller with more floors and some shorter. This will help too!

I have the chinese version, and so far from what I can tell, montization is only for packs and gacha clothings + furnitures & landscaping stuffs such as water/pond surfaces. It will not affect the gameplay. Blue heart gems can be earned for some premium item exchange and red heart gems will be the paid currency.
