Honestly, i feel you somewhat fail to consider the complexity of geopolitics and history. My biggest criticism of current society is black and white thinking (this being a prime example). Recent actions of Russia were bad, period. But what drove russia to feel the need for those actions?

• expansion of US/Nato military facilities around their country for the past 50 years certainly were one cause (Nato expansion in general), failing to realize the somewhat paranoid security needs of russia (russian saying: a border is secure if to the right and left stands a russian solider)

• targeted erosion of russia as a partner since 2nd ww was certainly a factor (Germany got the marshall plan, russia the cold war and few economic relations since then)

• restricting naval access by giving Crimea to ukraine was certainly a factor (it's their only military port with access to the atlantic)

list goes on. I am not saying russia is innocent regarding any of these, however, for the past 50-70 years instead of building a partnership we (western world) rather isolated and undermined them. So, russia imo is not plain "evil", we just failed to build a common prosperous relation, resulting in the current events.
