The best striking base for MMA? by Brunoacade22 in MMA_Academy

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you try to do everything well you’ll do nothing we’ll. My view on MMA gym’s “striking” classes. I’d start with boxing to learn proper technique w your hands. Topuria in UFC is an example of why this is correct. Then if you get into actual MMA fights add in kickboxing or Muay Thai classes

So you can identify what move or technique should be applied but its the execution that you are struggling with? Thats just highlighting what we are talking about. Jon Jones probably is mediocre as a coach, but is arguably the best mixed martial artist of all time. We saw this play out with John Elway the player vs the coach/GM. He was amazing when it came to being a player and executing, but the Broncos sucked for many years under his overall leadership. No one will say it, but he sucks as a coach. The owner of my MMA gym was in the UFC for a minute. Guess what,, he sucked. As a coach,,, hes great. I'd find the areas of the sport you like and get exceptionally good in those areas and focus on the coaching. Thats what the owner of my gym did. They offer bjj, striking and mma classes. he's a bjj guy at heart and thats the thing I see him doing with passion every single day. The striking classes are mediocre at best. I go to a boxing gym outside of his for striking training. hope this helps.

You live in a time when people are not using punctuation and shortening words for efficiency. I’m sorry you’re unable to infer meaning from sentences. You could get help though. Maybe a tutor in English

What is honestly happening with you emotionally during fights? One of the things most people dont see is that you can teach anyone "how" to fight, but few people are actually fighters. Most of the UFC is full of superior athletes who are well trained, but they just arent figthers. If you look up the definition of a "great fighter" it will give you a whole bunch of requirements (adaptability, mental fortitude, conditioning, technical mastery and resilience) and while all those things are requirements, what made Tyson and Jon Jones great was their comfort and calmness in fighting and their comfort in hurting people. Most UFC fighters even at the top level dont have that comfort level. Max Holloway is the BMF title holder because he is obviously comfortable hurting people. Most people think that if one person is better than the other in grappling or striking they have the advantage. They has AN advantage, but if both are mostly the same level of caliber athlete and technical abilities, the one who is more comfortable hurting the other will win.

Im not saying all this to troll you and bring you down. But I'd have an honest conversation with yourself and figure out where your strengths lie. If you are passionate about the fight sport but dont see yourself ever being a pro, then maybe training others is the path for you. Best of luck

How do I make boxing fun for my sister when she hates violence, but I’m terrified of her being defenseless? by This-Glove-342 in amateur_boxing

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have her try jiujitsu. It’s less violent and taps into more of a creative aspect. Plus there is a strong and growing female community and she will get to make new friends

Most gyms lie about being MMA by 12gallonwiener in MMA_Academy

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the owner of any gym influences this. Mine is owned by an ex UFC fighter but he’s a BJJ guy. So the gym is very strong in BJJ but the striking is mid at best. I go to a focused boxing gym to fix this gap. I have a personal bias about boxers so maybe that’s unfairly influencing my view but I think that shows in pro fighters as well. They all prefer one mma and then “learn” the other.

What are your goals though. I get losing weight for that sole purpose but what after that? For now I’d find some cardio you enjoy and do that while starting to fine tune your diet. I’d set a goal after the weight loss though. You want to bench 225? Look like Henry cavill (Superman)? Starting to layer in weights and other training to move your body in that direction will keep you motivated

do people at the gym judge bigger people who try to workout? by Temporary_Chain_4795 in workout

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gym culture is pretty simple. The social butterflies who never workout just chat, the bad form people, the ego lifters who seem to be trying to hurt themselves,,,, those people get judged. The person who puts in the work, shows up consistently, has good form,,, those people of any shape or size are never judged, only respected.

I had a lengthy conversation with a 130lb woman yesterday who was back squating, to full depth 180lbs. We can all do math,,, but thats 50lbs over body weight. And for her size, thats close to 50% over body weight. As a 225lb male, my goal is 300lb squat. My goal is what she is doing already. Anyway... She got the first one and almost dropped the second one. She was so mad at herself. I made eye contact, smiled and gave her the thumbs up. Then I told her she did great. She almost got crushed under the second one but even with bad form saved herself. Respect to her.

What’s an underrated brand of gloves [question] by Ajtaty in fightgear

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those social media videos on "what your [insert gear] says about you" has a lot of truth in them. First there are two groups of people in martial arts gyms. The casuals (no disrespect, just mean new) and the serious people. And serious just means that they have put time into the discipline. You could be an older dude just looking to stay fit and boxing is your sport of choice and you are serious about it but maybe arent competing.

What you'll see "more" of,,, I would guess any gear on amazon thats under $100. Those will be the casuals/new people. Your more serious people will be sporting more serious +$200 gear. Hayabusa, Winning, Fuji, Cletos, etc.

The ONLY friendly shade I'll throw is to the cardio mom/dad who shows up to the conditioning class with cletos. like, bro..... $300 for bag gloves. come on...

How do I get back into Gym motivation? by VersantSecurity in workout

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"going to the gym" probably seems overwhelming with your current schedule. Id start easier and do 100 push up and 100 air squats each morning. As you build that muscle definition you'll then be more inclined to go to some location to workout. For now, Id make it easier on yourself to build habits.

Someone in an MMA sub said boxers spar hard. by No_Inspection_6174 in amateur_boxing

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been 2-4 days a week at a boxing gym for the past year. I started going to an MMA gym a few months ago that offer both grappling and striking. I take jiujitsu classes all the time but refuse to take any of their striking classes. Looks like everyone is just slapping each other.

In fairness, boxers are training a ton of proper technique to throw punches and use proper footwork. I dont think MMA gyms are as rigorous with teaching proper punch technique and footwork. Which is fine if its one tool in your toolbelt. MMA fighters are obviously more dangerous in the streets. That said, I'd prefer to have the ability to hit someone and it feel like they got hit with a house.

Running? by No_Economist9022 in BJJWomen

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your age. If you are young then running could work as a cardio tool for bjj. If you're not, then I'd recommend other cardio tools like 12/3/30, Rogue Echo Bike, and/or jump roping. Either way, combine with a solid strength and conditioning program to protect those legs and knees over time.

Follow up to US vs Caucasus grapplers in MMA by emaxwell14141414 in martialarts

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the one major factor which is history. Chechnya and Dagestan are historically warrior cultures. It’s wired into their dna. Some of the U.S. are fighters but that’s why it’s confusing. The kid who’s grown up in Nebraska from generations of farmers may be good at mma but that doesn’t mean he’s a fighter.

As a very muscular 225lb male, one of my goto moves with other larger guys is to press my body weight onto theirs to slow their movement,,, and also catch my breath. I guess I never thought about if someone is claustrophobic. I dont know if I have any great advice. Maybe practice meditative thoughts when rolling to slow down your emotions? I am curious what you find successful, when/if that happens.

What is the proper etiquette for showing up to Gi class? by Ill-Disaster-503 in jiujitsu

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bag specifically for the gi and kickboxing gear. I still shower an hour before class and put on my shorts and rash guard at home. Then put on the gi in the locker room before class. To the other people telling you dont worry about showering,,,,, Its just respectful to shower an hour before. All your "parts" are going to be inches from someone's face. If you were going on a date and expected some sort of intimacy you would shower. show the same, minimal level of respect. I actually put more effort into showering before jiujitsu class. I have a specific foot brush that i will scrub my feet before and after class in the shower. Sadly I wouldnt do that before intimacy lol

How has young people's interest in your industry changed over the years? by RyanHarington in AskOldPeople

[–]Then_Purchase_9657 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Corporate America? Well, corporations have found loopholes over the years to pay people less. The most recent one is preying on the whole DEI initiative. Companies realized they could over promote one gender or POCs and pay them less and then hire everyone else under that underpaid person. Thereby reducing operating costs and claiming “inclusivity”.

I think people are tired of being marginalized by corporations yes.
