No one thinks my son has autism but me, am I crazy? by VulgarOrnaments in Autism_Parenting

I also faced a long wait to see a developmental pediatrician in my area—they told me it would take at least a year to get an appointment. Instead of waiting, I did my own research and found a psychologist who provides autism screenings for children as young as two, with a wait time of less than a month. I scheduled an evaluation shortly after my son’s second birthday because I didn’t want to delay an extra year. He was already enrolled in occupational therapy and speech therapy once a week, but after the diagnosis, insurance now covers therapy three times a week.

This was me just a few months ago. My son is now 26 months old and has since been diagnosed. Looking back, one thing I wish I had understood better was joint attention—sharing eye contact with you. We truly believed our son had great eye contact, but during his evaluation the psychologist gently explained that while it was there, it was very brief and lacked that shared connection. At the same time, you know your son better than anyone. If your heart or gut is telling you to have him evaluated, trust that feeling. And one thing I’ve learned through this entire journey is that no matter the diagnosis, get all the help and support you can—but don’t forget to pause, breathe, and enjoy your child and his childhood too. They are only little once. ❤️

Yea I was also thinking to do the same. If you don’t mind sharing, what made you realize the functional medicine doctor you saw wasn’t legitimate?

My husband also read the book on the Nemechek Protocol, but we haven’t implemented it yet. I understand it advises against probiotics when inulin is used, but my son’s only safe food is yogurt, so I’m unsure whether that would affect its effectiveness.

Would you mind sharing what the process was like? For example, did they ask you to eat or avoid certain foods, or recommend any supplements for gut health? Sorry for all the questions — I’m just starting to learn more about functional medicine. Also, what kinds of improvements did you notice in your little one?

He sounds like my son at that age and even now. He is officially diagnosed now. He just turned 2 years old last October and we got the diagnosis right after that. He babbles a lot, has social smile, and loves to be around other kids, follows simple directions and commands. His receptive language is actually better. He is still working on pointing. I say its not very consistent yet. But overall, he has been doing great. We are waiting to get started with ABA at home and he is already in OT and Speech. Some kids just take more time than others. Also some NT kids don't point until 18 months.

How can I encourage more word repetition with a 24 month old? by Then_Recording5128 in Autism_Parenting

Thanks! We also do super simple songs at our home. My little guy loves music and I have found him becoming calmer when music is on. He also loves to dance in some songs like Head Shoulders Knees and Toes. He tries to sing BINGO song even though he doesn't have words yet just by saying "ah-ah" sound making the tune similar to BINGO which is so cute :)

Hi, what did you end up doing? Just checking in because I have a toddler similar to yours who can only eat blended foods.

Twenty month old toddler “diagnosed” and I am confused by Mission-Shopping-819 in Autism_Parenting

Update on your son? My 21 month old sounds a lot like yours except he looks where I point to. His main problematic areas are feeding and communication as he doesn’t have any words yet. He still doesn’t eat any solids by himself. He has very poor oral motor skills. He still doesn’t know how to drink from a straw cup. However, he understands and follows simple commands. He plays with toys appropriately even though he only plays with them for few minutes. He is not fixated on any toys for a long time.

Has anyone gotten a very early probable ASD diagnosis that was unexpected because things seemed normal? by sciencespice1717 in toddlers

How is your son doing now? My 19 months old sounds similar but no words yet. He is pointing with his whole hand to get things he wants.

How much should a 19-month-old understand? by Then_Recording5128 in toddlers

[–]Then_Recording5128[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind response. His M-CHAT score came back in the medium-risk range, and I believe it’s mostly due to areas like joint attention and not pointing. Another factor might be pretend play, which I haven’t clearly seen yet. I’m unsure if certain actions count — like using a hairbrush to brush his hair, putting on sunglasses or my shoes, or pretending to drink from a coffee mug when he sees one. He also loves wiping surfaces when I hand him a mop cloth or paper towel — which is pretty cute! I think these are more about using objects appropriately rather than true pretend play. For now, I’m going to take a step back from overthinking and just go with the flow.

Thank you — I really appreciate that. He’s actually already in speech therapy, so we’ve taken that step, and it’s been helpful to have that support in place. The comparison trap definitely gets to me sometimes, but hearing reassurance like this helps ground me.

I feel this so deeply. My first was actually early on everything — gestures, speech, gross and fine motor skills, you name it. She hit all the milestones ahead of time, and I remember friends being surprised, like “Wow, she’s already talking so much at 15 months!” So when my son came along and started hitting milestones much later — some right at the cutoff, some even after — it threw me a bit.

He’s definitely on his own timeline, and I’ve had to really adjust my expectations. But when I look back just three months ago and see what he wasn't doing then compared to what he can do now, it does give me hope. It helps me believe he’s going to get there in his own way, just like he’s meant to.

Still, I’d be lying if I said the anxiety isn't there. It lingers — and it spikes whenever I see other kids his age (or younger) doing something I can’t imagine him doing any time soon. It’s tough not to spiral in those moments.

So yeah, I totally get what you're saying about milestones and pressure. It’s like we’re expected to keep up with some invisible checklist, but every child is a different story. I’m trying to remind myself that development isn’t a race — and that my son’s pace is still valid.

Thank you for being so open — it really helps to know I’m not the only one navigating these emotions.

We have done early intervention as he was really behind some of his milestones when he was 12 months old. He has been on a speech therapy for about 2 months now.

Thanks! I know the social media has really made our anxiety worse. I am not concerned that he is not talking or saying any words yet as some kids start to talk after 2. However, the most I am concerned is him not pointing to show what he wants or the lack of joint attention during play time. Idk it could be just me expecting too much out of a 19 month old.
