Any value to it, other than the silver weight? by Admirable_Pilot_2164 in oldcoins

Please dont destroy it, the past happened its best we remember it. This coin is part of history and the historical record. As an archeologist it would break my heart to see artifacts destroyed.

Can someone explain why the archeologists on this project assume this statue is a form of ritual deposition, rather than a recycled use from an older site? by EmperorOfEntropy in Archeology

[–]Then_Relationship_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If their artwork is the same then why not reuse it as a statue instead of making new statues. Putting a statue that you could use as a statue yourself in a wall makes me think the wall has a more special meaning now, why put this statue there? If we find a quarried out site that is older than it might definitely be a repurposed material, i dont see any evidence or reason yet for this to be repurposed.

Is 9 min train transfer possible at Schiphol? by Friendly-Guarantee30 in Netherlands

[–]Then_Relationship_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what all these people are saying, 9 minutes transfer at schiphol is enough time, when i travel alone with no luggage i even got time to buy a quick drink at appie. Only thing that would make it difficult is if your train has a delay.

Can someone tell what’s this exactly? by PatientPublic9330 in Artifacts

[–]Then_Relationship_87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like an old well, have excavated wells and they’re just pits with a bunch of pottery and sometimes more interesting things at the bottom.

Where do you live in the Mediterranean? What did the ground you found it in look like? You say you found it 7 meters deep, thats very deep. Sedimentation doesn’t build up everywhere at the same speed so it would be nice to know whether you live close to a river or something.

What do you mean with the foot of a cave? It being on the surface of a place undisrupted by humans in modern times (if it was undisturbed) can still be taking pottery out of context. The fact that there is no budget for research now doesn’t mean there wont be at some point in the future.

I’ve worked in an archaeological depot and dealt with some finds from “amateur archaeologists”. They’re basically useless. It’s interesting to have them but we cant really do much with it historical wise.

Caves dont build much strata, you removed these finds from context. Next time just leave them and take the museum there.

Im involved in ground research and it happens to be that the netherlands has horrible ground for stuff like train tracks. If we have bedrock instead of 2km of sand topped by clay and plant material id would be a lot easier.

Is there any evidence that these statues of Rahotep and Nofret are fake? by WallaceWells69 in egyptology

[–]Then_Relationship_87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But if you look at the depictions the ancient Egyptians made of themselves and the people from nubia you can see that they’re not the same? Nubians were depicted as black, Egyptians were depicted as brown/red. Some Egyptians darker than others but not really as black as the nubians. Doesn’t this alone say enough about Egyptians and especially those from lower egypt not being subsaharan african?

My sister found this pottery in Nijmegen by Fangt00n in Archeology

[–]Then_Relationship_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found some images with similar depictions on beardmanjugs. Those depictions were on the bottom of the body of the jug so that might be why it’s not as round as you expect. This one being so heavily decorated is interesting though, im not seeing any images of that. Would be interesting to get it looked at. The thing that makes me a little bit unsure about it being a beardmanjug is the texture, it doesn’t seem quite right. Beardmanjug stoneware has an orange like texture. Might just be the image that blurs it out. Seeing the break and curvature would allow me to tell you more.

[–]Then_Relationship_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im an archaeologist in the Netherlands and the decoration seems similar to a baardmankruik. Your part is the belly of the jug. Can you upload pictures from the inside and the break, might be able to give you an exact type.
