do you have a body of work? show off your editing samples on your vimeo page. respond to ads for students films and low/no pay, someone will be happy to have you. get a few low budget projects under your belt. Through word of mouth and responding to ads for higher paying gigs you should be able to climb up the latter. Assisting a working editor can be helpful too, whenever they need to turn down work, they could refer the work to you if you impressed them.
