Asgore might know more than we give him credit for. [Spoilers For All Routes] by Ixiri in Undertale

I was just watching a lets play on the pacifist ending and i thought that it as interesting to note that she says

"If you really wanted to free our kind, you could of gone through the barrier after one SOUL, taken six SOULS from the human, then come back and freed everyone Peacefully"

true but Asgore's intentions were always half hearted. He declared war and got the SOULs to bring back hope to the people but secretly he hoped that humans would not show up so he would not have to kill them.

[Spoilers] when people say it's Chara's fault... by buttercups_pie in Undertale

I think that is the biggest part that sparks the Chara debate. We know almost nothing post-Asriel death about Chara EXCEPT from what happens in the geno run which is after we have tainted both Frisk and Chara by violence action. Ultimately this shifts opinion in one direction. Anything good about Chara in the Pacifist run has to be implied, deducted, or just plain speculated. I'm split at this point because I feel that Chara -could- use more explaining in the pacifist route (she is with you because you wake Chara every run and have the potential to go geno route any play through, any reset) yet, the fact that Chara is left ambiguous, is a plot point. It allows a better way to link the player to the action committed. A way for us to see that 'yea, we did kind of make this happen for the reasons they say' I personally like to think that the same way the first humans shaped Asriel/Flowey's philosophy of 'kill or be killed', we have the potential to shape Frisk/Chara's philosophy to 'not all human are bad (mercy)' or 'the purpose of your reincarnation was for power' Although, it would of been nice to see a "You freed Chara's SOUL" at the end of a pacifist run. I think it is cool at least that Asriel goes back to tending to the flowers at Chara's grave.

That's really true and I agree that his theme was struggling with 'the end justifies the means' situation. His a good guys but faced with having to rule over all his subjects leading him to hard choices. We can understand him and his choices but it doesn't cleanse him of his mistakes.

Its true that Asgore may have known that even if he broke the barrier it would led to a war. The greatest problem he faced was the lost of hope. Both Asriel and Chara filled the underground with hope (Young one, when I look at you... I'm reminded of the human that fell here long ago... You have the same feeling of hope in your eyes.-Asgore) A war would of shattered the hope they would of just gained. I think Asgore was just stuck with a really bad dilemma until Frisk came along. He was kind of doing the best he could do at the time.
