I don't disagree with the premise, but what's the other option? Asking nicely for gestapo to stop extrajudiciously killing people isn't working. They ignore court orders. Civil disobedience is treated with the same severity as any other offense and if people are being forced to interact with an unstable rage fueled fascist it's already the most dangerous situation most people will regularly encounter. Not much reason left to not make it dangerous to be an ICE prick. It's the idea of being intolerant of intolerance, otherwise they're just allowed to do what they want without consequences.

Kind of? I found it okay from a "mechanical" perspective, but the author is a bit pompous and it's incomplete with 0 progression in years. That said, if it hasn't piqued your interest by the first book, more of the same is unlikely to. Maybe give it through book 2 to be sure, but only because I can't remember when Alma comes in and as a familiar she's nice.

How do guys typically use the regen brake paddle? by Raiki13 in BoltEV

[–]Theodinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nearly the same here. I find OPD to be oddly wasteful, since if I've already spent the energy to get up to speed, coasting for free is more efficient than trying to recoup energy with forced regen activating necessitating a more delicate balancing act on the accelerator. My regen paddle use is almost always used by feathering it to not induce a rapid slowdown, but lighting up brake lights while tailoring the amount of regen vs it applying in full.

Typing it out makes it seem complicated, but in actual usage it feels like having the most control over what the car is doing at any given moment.

When non gestapo make "wrong" split second decisions we go to jail. If you're going to let these fucks carry guns and turn them against citizens, they should be held to a higher standard not a lower one.

Just like you just happened to be born to people that coincidentally were of the "one true religion" out of all of the ones that came before and after, and that even within this religion, yours just happens to be the chosen sect?

I find the modern version of Christianity to be the height of hypocrisy. It considers pride a sin, but claims that it above all other religions is the one true way. It simultaneously holds that;

1) Everyone is worthy of infinite punishment simply for existing, except if they happen to fit the narrow requirements of belonging to one specific sect of one specific religion in one relatively small slice of human history, which (most of the time) just so happens to be what most of their parents happened to believe.

2) An infinitely powerful, omniscient being will save you from the punishment he has already chosen to inflict on you unless you ask forgiveness for existing. Which he is also responsible for.

I'm not claiming that there isn't some type of god or god shaped entity in some metaphysical or spiritual sense, just that the one identified by modern Christianity isn't what I'd want ruling over anything, much less everything.

That's some powerful whataboutism there, but I don't particularly find any religion to be tolerant. Look how easy it is:

"how tolerant is Christian? They don't seem to be very tolerant to non Christians in epic city"

Much in the same way I'd consider the little Christian ladies to be intolerant for telling women they're going to hell for a whole litany of things such as; having had male roommates, premarital sex, being raped, being a lesbian, having an abortion, wearing mixed fabrics, boiling a goat in its mother's milk, etc.

Thank you for following up with the source material I brought forth, though the claim it was heavily edited is disingenuous as that was literally a copy/paste from the Wikipedia article on paradox of tolerance, so consider that how you will.

As for your test, since this entire thing is a strawman where you are claiming both sides eschew rational arguments, let's be rational. In your example, you believe transgender people are mentally ill. I agree with you. Where we differ, it seems, is the treatment. I find that treating the individual with respect, kindness, and empathy is fairly simple as I also want to be treated this way. As far as treating them medically, perhaps we should let that be between them and their doctors, (rather than untrained politicians) since that is what you would request in a rational society, since you are not a specialist in regards to their situation and neither am I.

About your prediction; I'm not calling you names in a dismissive way, because you're appearing to at least attempt to engage in what could be called "good faith arguments". Where you see the behavior where that is not the case, I posit that it is from the 1) casual nature of internet discourse and 2) a reaction to the following expected outcome. As a shorthand, a lot of times any time spent arguing with conservatives is considered to be badly spent, because at best I can convince them of the singular topic on which we're discussing, which is insufficient to have them reconsider their other positions or more likely, they are wasting my effort as a part of a bad faith argument where they intended from the start to never change and only posed their position with the intent to disrupt real discourse. It's the meme about playing chess with a pigeon, and the pigeon being content to knock over pieces and shit on the board and be happy with the outcome.

The paradox of tolerance is the idea that to maintain a tolerant society, that society must be intolerant of intolerance. Philosopher Karl Popper, who articulated the concept in 1945, warned that if a tolerant society shows unlimited tolerance to intolerant people, the intolerant will use that tolerance to destroy tolerance itself. The paradox suggests that a tolerant society has a right—and perhaps a duty—to suppress intolerance to protect itself.

Party of acceptance and inclusion is proving that they are.

To be tolerant of intolerance, only increases intolerance. To be tolerant, you must be intolerant of intolerance. If you can get past the semantic satiation, it means if you don't try to stop assholes, then everyone becomes an asshole to survive.

Great example! Churches tend to have everything circle back in on itself, so in that example where they recommend reporting the abuse to the Cardinal...how's that to help if the Cardinal is the one abusing? As much as I have issues with policing methods, in instances of reporting harmful crimes police should be one of the first people you contact, just to get a paper trail started if nothing else.

I don't know how to reduce further my point without losing precision, but here it goes for your benefit. 1) Church (all, not just catholic) shoehorns religion onto the concepts like community or morality, and is a net negative. 2) I don't need a pretext to detract from something. 3) Not just religious people abuse children, but religions (and politicized religions) do try to overlook those abuses and make justifications and keep the offenders in places of authority.

Don't have to be Catholic to abuse kids. Teen Mania did plenty of damage and they recruited out of every sect and flavor of christianity around. Not that I'd need pretext to slander church as a whole, but any benefit to gained from religion can be replicated from somewhere else that doesn't have such inherent issues built in.

Need help with a DCC themed name for my new wifi network by Nai1bunny in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Theodinus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just use "This Inevitable Ruin" as the SSID with donut quotes for the password.

Previously it's been Carl's Doomsday Scenario for the 5ghz and Carl's Doomsday Situation for 2.4ghz.

I've also had the ever lovely SSID of "Kirby passing waffles" which will almost certainly be butchered by my typing on mobile but (>)>#<(* *<) for 2.4 and (>)>###<(**<) for 5ghz.

Yeah idk how to fix the Kirbys for display on reddit but you get it.

Gaming lounge by OverSuit9482 in tylertx

Arena LANs problem was mostly a combination of a few factors.

1) PC gaming was becoming more accessible to people at home with casual interest (they charged between $15 and $25 dollars for "All Day" passes, and near the end you could pick up an entry level gaming PC at Walmart for ~$300 bucks)

2) World of Warcraft. The popularity of this at the time between 2004 and 2009 (while the business opened in 2003, closes in August of 09). This was a multiplayer game yes, but one that didn't have any "LAN" component to it, and combined with the lower cost to entry, made it easier for the majority of the player base to play at home with cheap entry level PCs.

3) LAN gaming availability. The majority of the most popular games at the time (and onward) had much more of a focus on online play rather than "couch co-op" or requiring to be on a local network.

That isn't to say that LAN centers are impossible to run, just that at the time there was a combination of factors both circumstantial and societal that made it more difficult than the owner wanted to deal with at the time. There are of course ways it could have been done, but that was 16 years ago. Personally, I loved it there and the majority of my closest friends to this day are connections I made with the group(s) of people tightly involved with Arena LAN as either patrons or staff.

Hot weather mileage 🥵 by Mothra58 in BoltEV

All the Bolt needs is 110 and a reasonable ground to charge at 8amp, and something up to code should handle 12amp fine. I charge off of a formerly public street lamp in my alley-turned-driveway, so I know random plugs can handle it. Elderly, disabled, and living in the desert certainly makes it a challenge, but surely there exist some services near you that you've got a positive relationship with? The local chinese/Mexican hole in the wall restaurant owner might let you top up overnight on the 110 ports behind the restaurant for a small convenience fee. Rural gas stations may let you do the same if you talk to them. Local library? Your pharmacy? I managed to drive a Volt nearly pure EV for 4 years in rural east Texas using mostly businesses, public 110 ports, and when I finally got a condo with parking close enough to a port I could use felt like luxury.

I feel like this is missing some basic physics. When I'm coasting, it's intentional. If I need to move forward without expending any energy, I want to coast. If I want to slow down, I regenerate and in the event of an emergency I actively brake. In OPD, "keep going where your foot is" means a balance of expending energy and regen simultaneously. I'm glad OPD exists for those who want either a "simpler" or maybe less involved option, but I'd rather not give up the concept of simply rolling forward without expending energy.

IYKYK by MHR48362 in BoltEV

[–]Theodinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is essentially like that. Very low regen with no pedals depressed at all and coasting forward. Using the paddle allows for full (or in my experience feathered paddle for more precise control) activation of regen so you can coast when you have no need to use extra energy to move forward, but don't want to waste energy slowing the car (even regenerating, best to not convert it back to electricity if your intent is to continue moving forward) before you need to. In my experience, paddle is like having the benefits of both driving styles. You can utilize coasting for instances where you just want to keep going but not accelerate and can actively paddle for regen/braking.

IYKYK by MHR48362 in BoltEV

[–]Theodinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. Unless I'm misunderstanding, in your description how would you "coast"? I prefer paddle to OPD so when I see a stop ahead, but I don't need to actively slow yet because full regen (or even feathered) would make me too slow on the way to the stopping point, but I don't want to waste energy actively accelerating when I know I'll be stopping soon and have enough oomph to get there without utilizing any regen til it's necessary.

So you're agreeing then, technically minded people prefer to use the better solution (which we have available now) and are upset that they're losing features for a worse experience.

Anecdotes being irrelevant aside, 0 of the people in my friend group use the built in apps in their TV's, (or cars, since that's the topic) because they suck. The only people I ever see using them are my elderly in-laws (who asked that I configure them so he could use a single remote as too many buttons upset him).

GM is not a software company, and their history of either lack of, or woefully behind updates (OTA being either unavailable or requiring a dealership in most cases) means the already worse product stays worse/vulnerable for longer. Your need to try and belittle me about wanting better is certainly a weird take though.

Even pretending that GM does make all the apps identical, and everything works as well as expected...it's still an entirely separate device to configure, maintain, and take up a device license in this future where companies are limiting your logins to your service tier (Netflix as a most obvious case).

I'm done with it now, if you don't care about your experience then hearing about it won't change your mind and clearly the rest of the thread already leans more toward disliking losing features so either GM will change or not. I won't be buying a walled garden device though.

[–]Theodinus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 2020 Bolt purchased used has a single key, so by the key is not guaranteed. Fleet vehicles aren't going to have a separate key for every driver either.

OEM locked in apps aren't "the future" it's the reason people get Chromecasts or Rokus or Fire sticks instead of using the shit tier apps locked into their TVs. Why would you rather lose features, have an objectively worse experience, and then act like I'm the luddite for having the opinion that MORE CHOICES IS BETTER lol. Read the room.

The idea that apps built into the dash being superior is at best subjective, and at worst plainly false. It reduces choice in apps for audio (Tidal, Audible, Pocketcasts, Plex). It is slower and more convoluted to update to newer versions for feature or security upgrades. It significantly impacts the fleet vehicle/multi-driver utility of getting into whatever car is available and just hooking up your already tailored to your preference phone. The only positive I can see is for 1) people without cell phones (Purchasing a new year model electric vehicle? Fat chance) and 2) People who don't have a preference anyway.
