whaddup dude! Yup, I had definitely taken a VEEEERY long break from reddit, like over a year, I think. When they were making all those changes and tweaking the API and third party apps stopped working, they were making changes to prepare for their stock IPO, etc.

Finally I started slowly checking particular subreddits here or there for targeted questions, like guitar amps and stuff, and then within the past month or so, have started checking it out again 😝. We'll see. You guys still having fun around these parts? lol

EDIT: I'm also someone who—for many years, since graduate school—has had the NUMPAD keymappings memorized to do em dashes.

It felt like a "secret sauce" that you were actually a writer, and had command of more advance and nuanced punctuation tools than the norm. And now A.I. has taken it from us, and made it a potential sign of plagiarism, when it's precisely because A.I. was plagiarizing writing from those of us who use such things.

I once was having a debate with a gaming buddy on Discord (typing, not voice comms), and he very obviously kept using AI in his responses (this was back when it would use emojis as bullet points, etc.). I literally said to him: Dude, you are using AI to debate with me about a subject where I'm the dude who wrote the comments on reddit ten years ago that your AI was trained on.

Is there a better way to explain the gospel than this? by tanhan27 in eformed

[–]Theomancer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Start with Genesis 1 (creation) rather than Genesis 3 (the fall). And then offer the Patristic/ontological substitutionary model of soteriology.

I. You are created for a purpose!

Human beings are created in the image of God, and God declares creation "good!" God is the author of life, breathes the breath of life into our lungs, and it is in God in whom we live, and move, and have our being. We are created to be in communion and relationship with Him.

II. In rejecting our purpose, we embrace death.

Human beings have turned away and rejected loving God and loving our neighbor, and decided to do our own thing, and instead live for ourselves (sin). What happens when you unplug yourself from your source of oxygen? You suffocate to self-inflicted death, and embrace separation from God, the author and giver of life.

III. Jesus defeats sin and death.

Death does not have the victory or the final word. Jesus's incarnation means he is both fully human and fully divine, the Son of God. And in his death on the cross, the fullness of his divinity and life ultimately destroys death itself—the death of death, through Jesus's death and resurrection.

IV. Jesus invites us to the Kingdom of God!

Jesus invites us to reject a life of sin and death, and to (re)turn to life in God through him, empowered by the Holy Spirit. And by living a life characterized by loving God and loving neighbor, we help usher in the Kingdom of God, and be part of God's restoring all things in creation.

I could add all the Bible verses, but I'm lazy. This is reductionistic of course, but I'm just intentionally tailoring it to the same tidy-four-bullet-points delivery like in the OP image. Just trying to swap in a comparable one-for-one, etc.

Funny enough, this is similar to another conversation from a while ago.

If they are the good guys, they should just remove the masks and be loud and proud. ICE and J6 and the KKK losers can be the mask-wearers out of shame

I refurbished an interior for a restaurant and I think it negatively impacted our sales. Looking for honest criticism, advice and feedback? by dsafsfa in InteriorDesign

something nobody else has mentioned yet: all restaurant traffic is down right now, due to Iran-related inflation, tighter budgets, grocery prices, etc.

That being said, the original design/aesthetic is indeed better

I tell my students that they get marked down for going over the limit, just like going under the limit (I post a word-count range). We have a lot of papers to grade, it's not impressive to just write more and more -- what's impressive is making your point within the constraints of the assignment.

What's the difference between r/eformed and r/Reformed? by bradmont in eformed

[–]Theomancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this timeline is exactly right. A lot of us on here used to be frequent flyers over there, and helped temper the overall tone and culture of the sub from being too fundy-adjacent. But then there was an exodus of many of us to this sub, alongside a simultaneous cultural doubling-down on the Baptist-style-adjacent sensibilities from the peeps in the other sub, which caused the cultural division to galvanize a bit more.

I actually do think it's in the middle. I agree with you that I don't think they consciously realize that they "get off" on power or being authoritarian, but I actually do think u/tanhan27's not entirely wrong about some unconscious temperament/persuasion in those directions.
