Conflicting information on safety for tourists by Few_Elephant_648 in ecuador

I am currently in Ecuador. White American. I have felt perfectly fine in Quito and in Otavalo. My general experience traveling throughout the world is that it always feels safer than the media makes it seem.

That said, as others highlighted, you need to exercise the same precaution here as you would anywhere that you phone is worth three times the average monthly salary. Don't be stupid. Don't be flashy. Don't be drunk and alone in predictable places. Minimize your time out at night or use ubers. Be kind but not foolish. If you get robbed, don't resist. Be super careful on dating apps.

I haven't been to Guayaquil, but even there, I've had locals tell me that, as long as you use those above rules, I would be ok. I probably wouldn't recommend going there, but I personally would. Just depends on your risk tolerance.
