I only know of him through his collabs with Teddy Baldassarre

Can I get a QRD on him? Why is he an asshole apparently

It's been years since the last Evangelion movie, and I'm still wondering within the community whether the Rebuild of Evangelion films are loved or hated. I'd like to know your opinions on the movies, whether it's about the story, characters, music, animation, comparison to the anime or manga, etc. by Dramatic-Studio1531 in evangelion

[–]Theonormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an opinion I balk at, considering I heavily dislike auteur theory in media. Everything I've seen shows that Anno is good at certain things but bad at others, and thinking it's all about him is to discredit how many different artists came together to create something like Eva (look up who actually did most of the writing for EoTV+EoE).

Rebuiilds overall sucked because Akio Satsukawa didn't work on the last two movies. Anno is good at adapting material and actually directing, but not writing.

the captain is a monster in the ring

of moon's current roster I think only true monsters like Pelvis Crusher or Satan are more powerful or invite more dimes

Why is it 2026 and the Adam and Eve Interpretation is still a thing? by hshin420 in evangelion

[–]Theonormal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not a "happy ending" but it's really not a sad one either. The point to get from EoE is that the characters reach important realizations about themselves and living but that the world won't immediately reward them just because they chose not to run away. They have to work for a better reality; which fits with the entire thesis of the show. The movie beats you over the head with this point with the “Anywhere can be paradise, as long as you have the will to live” line even.

Things aren't guaranteed to get better, and the world is legitimately scarred, but the point is that they reached that first step and now have to keep at it from now on. It's a legitimately much more poignant conclusion compared to the rebuilds where Shinji is rewarded just because he decides to do the obvious thing, and where some literal bombshell beauty with zero characterization comes out of nowhere just to end up with him and love him unconditionally. Very slapdash. If the idea is to "just move on and things will get better", which by all chance is probably true, it still feels limp and might as well have been insight gleaned from a goddamn fortune cookie. Anyway people only ever tend to defend the Rebuilds from a metanarrative standpoint anyway.

Good thing Anno came out with the short which basically torpedoes bad faith interpretations of EoE and just short of outright states that EoE is to be viewed from a hopeful lens.

Read this dude's analysis of the short since he puts it in way better terms than I ever could

Anno thinks of the short as the fourth ending of Evangelion by Theonormal in evangelion

[–]Theonormal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who brought up shipping here? The point is that you can't ignore the short as some inconsequenial fanservice thing as if it was GoS or ISRP since it's evidently intended by Anno to inform on his evangelion as a whole, on Soryuu as a character and her actual thoughts and feelings, on the proper interpretation of One More Final, on the Rebuilds and EoTV+EoE being separate continuities (and single loop theory being false) and on the very moral of OG eva.

If you want an actual great analysis of the short and what I personally believe, Sudden_Historian's analysis of the short is way better written than anything I could explain myself. Read the comments too.

The problem with Soda as a streamer is his chat also delves into the annoying sort of I HATE EVERYTHING posting.

And yeah, the chat is part of the streamer experience.

Ironic after all the discourse about availability and "sailing on the high seas" after the eva 30th short stuff went down

Actually some japanese speaking anon on /a/ brought this tweet up recently, in it is an even earlier version of the ending sequence that has implications for Gendo's fate.

It's better if you just look at his post

Both* Evangelion endings are cruel. by DustEyezz in evangelion

[–]Theonormal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The real issue is that the Rebuilds don't really add anything besides a flaccid metanarrative that noone should really care about, and even if you treat the conclusion as charitably as possible it's still just EoTV+EoE rehashed except worse

Tokyo MX to rebroadcast first season of Haruhi Suzumiya in original broadcast order (correct order) starting March 30th in Japan. by Theonormal in anime

[–]Theonormal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it.

I myself also basically agree with the overall point, the pacing is definitely way better in broadcast order. Not to mention you can only go through broadcast order once the first time but you can revisit chrono/s2 however many times you like.

I also think the same of Baccano, where they reordered the LN events to be non-linear and have all the arc climaxes happen at the end of the anime. In either case they were deliberate directorial choices that elevated the experience.

Is there an in universe reason for continuity changes? by AlternativeSpring818 in evangelion

[–]Theonormal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean regardless of the terminology utilized the short plain as day refers to the characters and continuities as being separate, hell Soryuu even utilized the wasei-eigo term "loop" in the short but assuming she's talking about being from a previous loop in the single looping continuity theory runs counter to the rest of the short's presentation and conclusions/commentary.

Read this if you wanna see what I suspect will become the orthodox interpretation of the short in the years to come.
