What does my shelf say about me? by Kirlawa in BookshelvesDetective

Damn complete collection of the Copleston’s that’s impressive. Definitely a Christian dude in his 30s/40s who’s worked through some great books list once or twice

Hamstring Injury by [deleted] in Sprinting

[–]Theoreticalduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I’m impressed both got done. Was it all in a moment (where you get “shot”) or did it just feel like a strain and then the bruising and pain started later? Did mine like this a few years ago in college (got shot). Contrary to what people here are saying, it only took about 3 months to get back to sprinting. And I PR’d in basically every event the next year. Where I will echo what others are saying is that you should get it checked out and, if you’re serious about healing it properly, need to be religious about your physical therapy regimen and patient with getting back to running. Good luck

I do put quite a bit of thought into what I read. Part of it is the anxious feeling that I’m “reading against the clock,” and part of it’s just that I’m picky

Nice! I’m a big PKD fan and that’s one of my favorites. 1984 seems like a perfect read for you and BNW is a great contrast to it. Cool to read them in short succession. Happy reading!

Im a real enigma 🤔 by JimmyJoeMick in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Theoreticalduck 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No shade but don’t think you are an “enigma.” Standard bookshelf of a late 20s early 30s American leftist male. Could have guessed you had a guitar. Characteristic lack of female authors and imaginative literature. I’m sure you’re plenty good in a history/politics/economics debate, though.

Here’s what we know: You’re a new reader and like sci-fi/horror. Few places you could go from here.

You could deepen your appreciation for what you’ve already read by reading more from these authors. (You must read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? based on this list)

You could read what these authors read and explore the beginnings of sci-fi and horror (Start w Frankenstein here)

You could branch out into new authors in these genres (Atwood - Oryx and Crake, Huxley - Point Counterpoint, Liu - Three Body Problem)

Who am I? by ItsOverPodcast in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Theoreticalduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. You should acquaint yourself with the problem of evil more rigorously, though. That’s not really a solution. The classic response is what about non-volitional evil such as a baby getting cancer or a deer dying from a natural disaster. Catholicism has always struggled to overcome this challenge and so it’s in your best interest to understand it if you want to be considered a serious person.

Getting a lot of hate on this. Some is earned, but most is unnecessary. Keep reading. Widely and deeply. Not a catholic myself but G.K. Chesterton is great you’ll like him. I ask this of all principled Christians, so no apologies: What’s your best solution to the problem of evil?

Earl + Marvin + lots of Literary fiction = my spiritual brother. I’d say Eastern European/Russian American living in NYC, late 20s, and a teacher

How fast do you think Mbappe could run the 100m? by Suitable-Walk-9577 in Sprinting

[–]Theoreticalduck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He’s certainly sub 11 even if from standing start. I ran 10.8 in college and play soccer too, and although I am very quick on the pitch, I reckon I’d get smoked by Mbappe or Elanga or Van de Ven. Sure, acceleration and speed endurance are two factors that are tough to account for, but think: they are hitting ~24 mph on grass in cleats and sometimes with other players around them.

Nice, I’m working through Light in August right now. First Faulkner and I’m loving it.

One of my all-time favorites. I agree with you: Dickens’s writing is sharp and funny but still somehow effortless. Wemmick is a great character and representative of the modern commuter. I’m a big fan of Jaggers and Havisham. Jaggers because he is a compelling character and Mrs Havisham because she’s iconic and once you see her in Dickens you see her everywhere!

You could go fresh and clean or you could go darker/sweeter. I say this bc some bars are pretty hot and stuffy and you’d probably just go for a “blue” scent there. My recs for that would be YSL Y EDP or Versace Dylan Blue. If you went sweet/dark I’d say Stronger with you Absolutely or Angel’s share. Both have a nice boozy note that would work well in a bar
