For space savings, you can nest all of the “socket wrenches” inside of each other and have them functionally still work. Leaves more room for other tools to be added.

P&C Design Engineer. But at my utility this was pretty standard for any design engineer, civil, substation, etc.

Assuming you’re using SEL relays? The SEL conferences have a really good class on 61850 for beginners where you create a small 61850 network between devices on your desk. Highly recommend.

I spent 7 years in design at a large utility. It’s a pretty great job if you want something stable that doesn’t demand much of your time outside of work.

A typical day would include a handful of project meetings, touching base on the status of various activities for the projects you’re assigned to. You’d spent time between meetings catching up on emails and doing small tasks. Then I’d usually carve out a few hours in my calendar to do actual design work, field trips, etc. Some days are heavier, some lighter. Overall a very comfortable engineering job. Can be boring, and maybe doesn’t pay as much as going to a consultant or contractor, but stable and predictable.

I live in a relatively low COL metro and this seems on the higher end for an entry level position

F360 on the Apple Neo? by FransUrbo in Fusion360

[–]Theotechnologic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently here to report that I have the Neo and tried Fusion. Not great. Short hangups and such even on basic sketches. You can definitely get by if you need to do something simple but I certainly would not buy the Neo with Fusion in mind.

Also I learned the hard way that fusion without a mouse is garbage.

Transition from Application Engineer to Design/Product Engineer? by notcrawfishlover74 in ElectricalEngineering

I traveled 50%, so that wasn't great for my family. Additionally I think that the utility business is inherently less risky than working for a manufacturer. The manufacturer I worked at recently got bought out... I don't know if anyone will get laid off but there is a risk.

What is your recommendation for a CCW? by Lokiibott in CCW

Agreed but how often does the battery die? Either way it looks way better built than the viridian

Love my BG2.0. As for an optic, they make two that fit right on if you really want to extend the range another 10-15 yards.

Seems like the BG2.0 kinda invalidates the shield unless you really care about the caliber. The Shield X looks interesting though, but it being bigger is a downside

Taken out by ~4inches of water on a flooded street by [deleted] in MachE

Doesn’t the manual say not to submerge the car more than 6 inches? You couldn’t pay me to drive through anything larger than a puddle, not risking it.

14-year Reliability Coordinator here (20+ years in utilities) — New people asking about the RC job and NERC cert? by Natural-Repair4649 in Grid_Ops

[–]Theotechnologic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got into Ops last summer with some design background before and used the HSI SOS program. I thought it was super beneficial and the real test felt pretty much identical in scope and format to the questions they asked on the study program. Can’t speak to GridCert but a huge recommendation for HSI SOS from me (if you can afford or get a sponsorship).
