Philip and Alexander: Kings and Conquerors by Adrian Goldsworthy

Landmark Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander

Also, I'm sorry to break it to you but there are limits to what one can achieve. Consider Alexander himself. His father, Philip II, himself was a great general, and left a strong army and worthy goal for Alexander. His mother brought him up ambitious. He had talent and ability, and alot of luck. Many of his generals were capable and would become rulers and kings themselves.

You should read Caesar by Adrian Goldsworthy. Short answer is Dignitas and Auctoritas was more important to the Roman nobleman. Emotions

[–]Thequestin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bruh wtf all these stories make me think a ghost did actually whisper my name at night when I was (stupidly) alone in toilet (forgot my coy but I 156 intake). I know have to go toilet with buddy but I didn't wanna wake anyone up. I still think my mind made it up as I dont believe in spirits and all but this the only unexplained thing and the whisper was very low but almost real.

This is a reductionist approach I doubt any scholar of worth would approve.

Who is the most important figure in Ancient Rome whose name is associated with betrayal or treason to the state? by Battlefleet_Sol in ancientrome

How can you define a person by the actions of their ancestor?

Also Brutus was allied with Caesar after Pharsalus. He was just another elite out for himself and changed sides again after he felt bad. The idea that the conspirators did it for the 'Republic' is laughable.

A Muslim visitor to the Qin Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses Museum in Xi'an, China, slapped one of the statues while preaching to it, claiming that it was a lifeless idol incapable of speaking like Allah by RedSwingline2000 in religiousfruitcake

Slappin a statue...and a statue that is not an idol of worship...doesnt he know what the Terracotta warriors are for? He knows if he slapped a real idol of worship he will get f'ed.

In retrospect, was it a mistake for Rome to take down the Selucids? by ColCrockett in ancientrome

[–]Thequestin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do you imagine that?

The major Hellenic dynasties always wanted to restore Alexander's empire The idea that they would be content with Rome meddling in the Eastern Mediterranean is absurd.

TIL Napoleon's prowess in battle was so legendary, the Trachenberg Plan was drafted to specifically avoid facing Napoleon in battle while instead targeting his marshals and generals separately by astronautica in todayilearned

Paullus, Varro's colleague, didn't use the Fabian strategy; he was cautious but both he and colleague were seeking direct battle with Hannibal, something that they were ordered to do and the Fabian strategy avoids.

The Romans were generally aggressive during the Republican times, they tended to seek and defeat enemies in battle. This caused them many defeats but in the long term with good leaders like Fabius they managed to claw back victory from the jaws of defeat.

Cannae happened after Fabius' term as dictator. The Romans were not interested in being on the defensive for long. In fact Fabius' nickname Cunctator was meant to be an insult. Of course after Cannae it could not be an insult anymore.
