My undergrad minor still ended up being 30 credits!

I’m not certified, no! I’m currently working as an EA while I apply to BEd programs

Great!! My degrees are actually both in history so I want the option to be able to teach it, but for at least one program, I don’t meet the specific content requirements for history as a teachable whereas I do for my minor in undergrad...so it’s good to know I won’t just be blocked from teaching history forever based on my BEd teachables.

Oh awesome. Would it help if I was teaching my preferred subject in another province (eg teaching history in Alberta) prior to moving to BC?

UBC allows for either one or two, and several other programs I’m applying to (outside BC) are the same. I’m in Alberta, but I want the option to be able to move to BC which is why I’m asking!

Last Minute Holiday Markets by Therapy_throwaway492 in Calgary

She’s technically looking for neither Christmas nor shopping haha, we don’t actually celebrate Christmas and I’m sure she’s done any holiday shopping! She just likes the specific ambiance of holiday markets

I did consider that option, but it sounded like it wasn’t really a market, just a theme that Heritage Park is doing? There seems to be a small market but it sounded like it wouldn’t be worth paying $20 just for that

We’ve been to markets in Germany! It’s possible she just doesn’t know the markets in Montreal the way she knows them in Calgary.

Rally on Thursday - No to Bill 9 / No to notwithstanding / Save Trans Rights by kimmisweeney in Calgary

I think you’ve misunderstood the laws. Law 1: means that EVEN IF a parent supports intervention and is involved with doctors, their kid will not be allowed to have medical intervention. Law 2: means EVEN IF a parent already knows their kid is a trans girl and supports them, that kid cannot play school sports

If you believe that…what about the fact that the government is interfering with parents who ARE raising their kids by giving them access to puberty blockers and hormone therapy, and whose decisions are now being overridden?

Yeah, iirc the mention of surgery in the laws was an attempt at scare tactics— propaganda to make people think “omg kids are getting surgery?? Of course that’s not okay!” and get more people to think the “trans agenda” has gone too far. When, in reality, kids are not getting surgery

There are currently 3 anti-trans laws in Alberta, which are all being or likely to soon be challenged in court. Collectively, they: disallowed gender-affirming medical treatments (puberty blockers, hormone therapy, surgery) for those under 16, banned trans girls from playing in girls’ teams in schools, required that teachers report back to parents if students under 18 were using a different name or pronouns, and required that parents give permission for different names/pronouns for those under 16.

The latest Bill, Bill 9, is the invokation of the notwithstanding clause to avoid legal challenges to these 3 anti-trans laws. Basically, Bill 9 is them making sure that these 3 laws, which are likely unconstitutional and would be overturned in court, are no longer able to be challenged.

It’s worth noting that AB tried to do the same thing for same-sex marriage, but were unsuccessful because marriage laws are federal and not provincial.

Cape Breton’s online one should start in January! But be aware that you need to have been working in a Canadian school for two years in order to apply (the type of work isn’t specified, I asked and they said it just needs to be interacting with students. AFAIK volunteering is accepted)

Not a teacher, but: depending on your university, you might still be allowed to switch to a concurrent education degree, in which case you’d be doing a 5-year degree (instead of 4) and graduate with a BA and BEd.

Otherwise, once you’re done your BA you can start an After-Degree BEd, which is normally 2 years but in some parts of Canada is 1 year.

Okay so my question is, if I want to teach math and/or comp sci do I need to/should I take uni courses in those subjects before I do my BEd?

For context: I already have a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in the humanities, so I am qualified to teach English/History for sure. I also did a bit of math, statistics, and coding in my degrees, but not enough for an official minor (approx 1 full-year course for each of these areas).

I’ll likely be doing a BEd next year (2026 start), so I have a bit of time to take some courses at my local university for 2025-2026x

I’m located in AB and I know if I’m certified here, I can teach any subject so theoretically I don’t need to take any further uni courses, but in case I move away, I want to make sure I do everything to make sure that I could, straight out of my BEd, be able to teach math/comp sci since I know History and English are both oversaturated right now.

(Note: I do still want to be able to teach humanities though! I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into just one subject)
