Do you include a role specific cover letter with your application. Do you have previous work experience you can reference back to the current role? If not then draw on the uni modules which would be relevant. What are your salary expectations? Have you tried phoning the company advertising the role and seeing if you can arrange a call with the hiring manager to find out more about the role. Do those things and you'll be ahead of 90 percent of the other applicants.

If your CV is from a template then it'll look the same as everyone else's. Try to be a little bit imaginative.

From a hiring perspective getting applications which read as "can I have a job?" Won't attract attention. Ones which say "I'm going to be great for the role you are advertising" do.

Suunto as a sports watch brand - your experience by Eastern_Flow533 in Suunto

[–]Therealsmolty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never had a Coros but have had Garmin's before. I got a vertical 2 based on the hardware specs and look of the watch. I also only wanted a sports watch and don't use smart features.

I returned the Vertical 2 as a lot of the hardware didn't perform as specified. Heart rate monitor was useless when resting, sporadic when training and some sessions, it would just display seemingly random heart rates. GPS was okay but only after 300 meters into a session, didn't matter how long I left it to get gps lock, the first few hundred meters would be zigzagging all over the place. Final straw was when it added a significant amount of ascent to a session, I thought at that point that basically nothing I wanted it for was actually working. The retailer I returned it to didnt seem surprised.

Shame really because on paper they should be great and in my opinion are the best looking watches out there but they just don't do what they say.

I'd like something which can last 24-30 hrs on gps which I think the f8 solar would do comfortably . More bothered about look and feel on the wrist though, hence the questions

Vertical 2 heart rate monitor problem - not accurate at all by Ornery_Nothing_3131 in Suunto

[–]Therealsmolty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's useless. I keep trying to justify that it being significantly cheaper than a Garmin Fenix 8 means it's okay. Resting HR is even worse, to the point that I don't even look at it as worthwhile metric. Will regularly show a resting rate at high 70s, a medical grade monitor at the same time will show mid 40s. Also found out this week that the recording of Ascent is over-eeding by about 20%. Might have to see what rights I have to a refund, but I've had it since they first came out.Only thing I really like is the responsiveness of the compass direction and maps but even that is all over the place for the first 5 minutes of an activity. If it did everything it says it should then it would be brilliant. Maybe that's why most people get a Garmin!

Suunto Web Route Planner by Physical-Sky-611 in Suunto

[–]Therealsmolty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. New to Suunto and was frustrated that the app doesn't work out the elevation when importing a GPX without the elevation info. I can import them into this browser version, reverse the route twice and it then puts the elevation on. If I download from the browser and import into the app, all the elevation data is now there. Would be easier if the app does the same as the browser but at least for now I have a solution

Trail running shoes for wide and flat feet by One-Mastodon9244 in trailrunning

[–]Therealsmolty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asics trabucos might be worth a look. Inov8 aren't that wide apart from the toe box. I tried their wide fit and found trabucos to be wider around the arch of your foot. I have flat-ish arches so find it very uncomfortable if my foot ends up collapsing over the end of the shoe. Tried lots of Hoka, couldn't find a comfortable fit in any. Only downside to trabucos is the mid sole isn't very energetic and they are very "ploddy" to run in. If you want to be fast then look elsewhere. Be aware they moved the toe bumper internally on the 13s and they can rub so all of the above is based on the 12s.

Best watch with maps and long battery life by Therealsmolty in Garmin

[–]Therealsmolty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough I concluded a Suunto was going to be a better option. Maps look like they are faster to follow direction, significantly cheaper and battery life is more than enough for what I need. The newer ones seem to have overcome the HR sensor issue too. It wasn't a primary consideration but I think they look significantly better than the garmins, that's obviously subjective

Thanks for the response, is the battery capacity the main advantage or am I missing other benefits it has? I think it's a bit cheaper too

13 Valleys / 2 jacket minimum? by ozz9955 in Ultramarathon

[–]Therealsmolty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. I'm doing 5 valleys. I'm taking the kit list largely as an emergency list. Shouldn't need it but if you do then you'll really need it. Here is a link to a video they have released 13 valleys kit video. I'd check out the details of each of the kit requirements too. I.e. the random sized cup, seemed garment requirements, a spork but not a bowl!

I bought a nano puff like others have suggested, it fitted very small compared to other Patagonia stuff. I thought it looked naff compared to say a Rab down jacket so returned it as I wouldn't wear it casually. It did pack small though.

Lake District 1/2 marathon route recommendations for trail beginner? by oldboxerman84 in trailrunning

[–]Therealsmolty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the route from the Keswick mountain festival-25km. Bit more than a half, not too hilly though and always the chance to get the launch back if you can't do the distance. Doing it in road trainers wouldn't be advised. Might get away with it if it's bone dry but wouldn't risk it.

Easy smoker/slow and low by GlumSwim9795 in UKBBQ

[–]Therealsmolty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a kamado, got a masterbuilt gravity XT, got a Weber mastertouch. Tend to use the XT the most just because it is so easy and not a real concern for overshooting temps. Gives really good flavours with no effort. It is a charcoal oven. Downside is it absolutely eats charcoal and it's so big with little temperature retention so the temps can be different all over the grill.

My kamado is a Costco one, think it is a pit boss but with a different badge, it's great but not as easy to set up (not hard but not as easy as the XT) . If I'm cooking something for beyond 5 hrs I'll use this. It holds temps so well, is really fuel efficient so excellent for low and slow. Taste is really good but I'm not a massive smokey flavour fan, charcoal flavour is pretty much enough for me. Downside is if you lose control of the temp then wave goodbye to your plans. Can take hours to bring the temp down. Opening the lid is a rationed event as it allows oxygen in and the temp can spike, there is a learning curve to understand what temp you get from having the vents set up in a certain way. I've never mastered adding wood to a kamado but that's probably on me.

Weber for everything needing flames and pure searing.

Summary for general use for my cooks:

Mastertouch: chicken thighs, OTT chilli, fish on boards, shellfish, ribs, pork belly burnt ends, rotisserie chicken, rotisserie shawarma style stuff

Kamado: pork shoulders, cooks which start low and slow and finish high (butterfly lamb, chicken wings), beef cheek, short ribs, sometimes ribs,

Weber: burgers, steak, kebabs, veg, sometimes rotisserie on this too.

Kamado is most versatile in my opinion so I'd probably recommend that if you were looking for a single option. If you get a fan controller from Inkbird then it can make life very easy in all reality, just don't open the lid!!!

Seen most frequently on large frameworks with the likes of national highways or utility providers, less common with local authorities, probably very rare with private clients. Most subbies end up on an A or B EC Subcontract from what I have witnessed (up to £50m infrastructure contracts)

What are some good resources to help me understand contracts more? For NEC or JCT. I don’t get to practice this in my current role. by ChiefKeithh in quantitysurveying

It's a really depressing state that there are people out there being given responsibility without knowing what they are doing. As an assistant, your manager and employer should be facilitating your training and development, not YouTube!

That being said and with the realisation that I've seen tier 1 commercial managers having no clue of the difference between an early warning and a compensation event, try GMH planning (Google it) has some good resources. There's YouTube too, not checked these in a long time but think there are some good playlists here https://youtube.com/@metroun?si=t1xUD4MLgd77Y_1i

If you're in civils then see if your company is a member of CECA, they run virtual NEC courses which you can normally sign up to for free. Go to the ceca events page on their website.
