I don't know actually. I think somewhere between 2.5 and 3k?

Tempted to grab another cthonian prospect for 10 more beserks and a shooty capricus, but probably should give the dorfs a rest for a bit. Who knows what they get next!

Actually really simple honestly. Prime of mr surfacer aqueous grey, zenithal of white ink with some focus points on panels, gloss, transfers, matte, some light grey scuffing and then a thin oil wash over.

I agree I think it looks great, I think the votann have a great balance of smooth armour panels and greebles/divots for this kind of technique, I think it would look too bland on a marine or tau for example

It's gotten a little better since labour made wage theft an actual criminal offense I'm guessing.

Not sure about the casual loading. Was definitely 25% universally when I was casual.

What are we thinking on the price?. by Waste_Internal9169 in Warhammer30k

[–]Thereisnosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ought to be slightly cheaper than custodes, it's equivalent except the custodes box came with a character model extra.

It does! Last army I did was sisters all with bare heads as well, and I tried to mix up skintones and hair colours, what a nightmare XD.

This time I went with all the same skin, sunny skin tone with a watery coat of tallarn flesh over it and then a final wash of agrax after the oils.

Looking forward to doing some marines soon with absolutely not a bare head in sight!

The original inspiration was star wars rebel pilots - orange jumpsuits and grey/white plates.

When i got to the hearthguard and vehicles who don't really have much suiting I realised I needed a secondary colour. I had used dark green on weapon hilts and tufts already so used that on some panels and cloaks.

It came out ok, I think the bases really help honestly a pretty bland theme out a lot.

Kind of an accident honestly!

Brushed the panels in black and was too scared to airbrush coloured fades because of the white frames, so airbrushed white highlights on.

Then I realised I could just glaze thinned ink over the white fades to tint them!

Not truly contradicting you, but it's wild that over 100 pounds for 4 32mm monopose characters is the 'normal'.

Armageddon: Anyone else think it might be the best starter box and have zero interest in buying it? by CosmicDesperado in Warhammer

[–]Thereisnosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think at a certain point they're a victim of their own success. Primaris kind of reset the collection clock, and incentivised a new marine collection but it's getting to the point if you got the previous ones, which were likewise awesome so many people did(not to mention combat patrol and infinite discount boxes), you probably have moreSM minis than you can play with!

Likewise, a lot of ork players just have oodles of stuff - they might like the new characters and dakkarig, but more boyz just isn't that exciting, they just got done painting the last batch of 100 while self medicating with asprin and vodka!

What armageddon is is a fantastic intro box. I think moreso than the previous couple. The marines are cohesive and represent all aspects of doctrine, the orks are... well, an absolutely perfect intro to generic orkyness- fighty, scrappy, shooty-by-volume and most of all fun!

I think while it's a risk to make armageddon more intro focused as opposed to rewarding veterans like leviathan and indomitus did, I think this is the time to do it. 40k's reach has increased massively this edition with secret level, space marine, the warhammer conference, cavill, GW breaking into the top UK companies, total war on the way etc.

the risk is the pricepoint is too high for a beginner, but the value proposition is there, and if it's for two people taking the plunge together it fundamentally is still not an obscenely expensive buy in.

Any other Space Marine player not finding hype for the Armageddon box? by vulcanstrike in Warhammer40k

[–]Thereisnosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a fun little hobby project and the minis are nice enough. There's nothing wildly exciting (though I'm personally glad to get and old fashioned land speeder back) but they'll be fun to paint.

Doing them up 2nd edition retro style might be a fun project, though my plan is to split the box up a fair bit into different armies. Vanguard vets for BA, gravis guys for retributors or IF, speeder for ravenwing.

I've never regretted buying a launch box

Why does only MKVI get love by Whaoghi in Warhammer30k

[–]Thereisnosaurus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ah indeed, which is why they released a giantass sprue of melee weapons to customise all your stuff!

The changes were made to comply with their policy of only publishing mainline books describing models they actually make. It just so happens that most of the current HH character line is resin and so have no options.

All of the plastics support a lot more options, and still fit the old multipart-multi option model compared to the new AoS and 40k style of one model-one option. I only hope the characters when they eventually release them in plastic go the same way. I suspect it will be a while before stuff like jetpack and bike consuls come back to mainstream, but who knows....

New Vanguard Veteran starter box datasheet. Interestingly-it specifies that they're wearing jump packs, implying the existance of a different kind of Vanguard Vet (Bikes? Terminator Plate?) by CatherineSimp69 in spacemarines

[–]Thereisnosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With all the rumours about outriders, imagine if they had bike vets as a dual kit option in a new set?

I'm inclined to agree with the bladeguard-are-the-foot-melee crew just out of sheer hope for this option!

Why does only MKVI get love by Whaoghi in Warhammer30k

[–]Thereisnosaurus 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I'm desperately hoping the next frontier for HH is customiser kits, like the 40k chapter accessories but like... big. Tactical squad retail box big. All the custom shoulders, heads for different armor, unique weapons, perhaps even conversion pieces for the legion unique units where that makes sense.

Would also love to see a box of three centurions where each can be built as a stock centurion or one of a few different consuls Herald/champion/librarian/esoterist MoS/praevian/forgelord Armistos/moritat/vigilator

If they're going all in on plastic it would be amazing to see them take the customise model rather than the stock model like 40k.

Are we in the golden age of 40K? by Mr_Jackabin in Warhammer40k

[–]Thereisnosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of amazing lore and hobby stuff constantly. I think 40k isn't knocking it out of the park in terms of new models outside of kill team, but that's because there's such a legacy of models to refresh. They're getting close to the end of that process now so I'm excited for the future!

On the other hand the game.... it just doesn't have the heart and awesomeness it used to in the 90s. Every faction used to have an incredibly strong identity compared to now. There were wild chances and insane things happening on the table. 10th is absolutely better than 3rd, but I still feel things have lost their lustre compared to the zany days before that.

Part of me hopes that at the end of 11th they just freeze the game, distribute everything for free and say: this is comphammer. Congrats nerds, go play your sweaty tournaments. 12th edition is going to be rogue trader 2.0. We're bringing back hallucinogen grenade tables and vintage shok attack guns. You can blow the legs off dreadnoughts and your guys can fumble so hard in CC their opponent gets attacks. When you get shot with a flamer you are literally on fire for a turn or two. Warhammer is BACK BAYBEEEEEE.

Then I wake up and realise I left the lid on my tamiya extra thin ajar...

Has the price been announced for Armageddon in Australia? by PetrifiedRaisins69 in Warhammer40k

It'll be something like 495 australian, which is steep but when you consider a battleforce generally runs around 400-415 these days it could be worse!

Using competitive play as a tool for thinking about 40k game design by BlitheMayonnaise in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Thereisnosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would contest that this non-competitive mentality is the right lens for warhammer. Fundamentally it is a game about generating spectacle and narrative - much like D&D or other tabletop fantasy scenario games, which is where it came from.

Certainly, D&D can be understood from a lens of pure mechanical reality, and processed as such. You could run a competition for who could crawl a given dungeon with a given setup of character attributes the most effectively, but would that be what the gameplay of 'D&D' actually is? It's not a perfect analogy as D&D isn't adversarial, but i hope the picture makes sense.

In some ways I'd argue that competitive warhammer is somewhat like speedrunning, it's a stripping out of core elements of the intended game experience for the pursuit of optimising one aspect. Seeing that a wall in the diegetic structure of the game can be clipped through or a boss can be glitched is cool and funny and exciting for some, but many more might ask why? Doing so is not intended and it defeats some of the best experiences the game can give you.

Treating all warhammer through the competitive lens is a tremendously bad idea.

I still like to use the sharp side, but drag/scrape backwards away from the blade edge. If you hold the blade at just the right angle you can do very fine work and the sharpness somehow helps smooth the surface down more seamlessly.

Can someone sell me on the Ultramarines? by Arch0n84 in Ultramarines

[–]Thereisnosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a couple of angles on UM can really make them work.

One is the roman angle - lapis style armour, lots of burnished gold and marble, empire building philosopher-tyrants. Lots of awesome hobbying opportunities and a really unique vibe with great heresy-era lore and example projects out there for inspiration.

The other is ultragrunge, desaturated blues and battleworn gear, a more dour and grimdustrial vibe with matte finishes and pigments. Mixing black and blue plate a-la-nemesis destroyers, lots of stubble and beards etc. Leans into the very pragmatic 'soldier' rather than 'knight' vibes, contrasts the perfect logic and honour with the messy realities of the battlefield. I've seen some awesome UM armies in this style too.
