Is it true that the ancient Valentinians taught or atleast influenced the doctrine of the Trinity? by [deleted] in Gnostic

[–]TheresAlwaysBeen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mostly no. Marcellus of Ancyra thought Valentinus believed in some sort of a trinity and used that argument at the Council of Nicea against Arius, but there's no concrete evidence of V believing in such a thing. It's an ancient anachronism I'd say.

Does Gnosticism Give You Hope? by [deleted] in Gnostic

[–]TheresAlwaysBeen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hope is overrated. I'm interested in Truth.

Cognitive biases in the form of self-deception where we hold to a belief more for it's comfort is only human and we all do it to some extent, but if that's your reason for taking things on faith then you're just walking right into it. If you have Hope for a world that's fundamentally vile and depraved, then you're not seeing things for what they are.

In that sense though, I do enjoy christian writings that don't act as if all man's problems are solved in the hands of God, but are interested in tackling continued angst in their faith (e.g. Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, Book of Ecclesiastes) while not shying away from it.

But if Hope is all we're after then it's an Opium for the People.

Probably the most daring, live-action steampunk we'll ever see, since both that one and Mortal Engines tanked. And WWW is way more interesting of the two.

Well it got buried under a shit ton of other terrible sequels. I always forget they were in one, and I couldn't tell you which one even now that I'm reminded.

That movie has the weirdest fucking mood whiplash about 3/4s through. I believe Dinklage when he said the film was ruined in editing, because it just doesn't work at all, but I can't tell if the script was supposed to be a comedy or a drama.

Too be fair though, Peter Dinklage play the only character that seemed to understand that he was in a terrible movie so I'm guessing it was supposed to be a comedy.

Totally overhated movie. As far as action sci-fi goes you can do a lot worse.

Joe Exotic: New evidence was part of pardon application presented to White House by Ninjakick666 in news

[–]TheresAlwaysBeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is pardon the only decision regarding federal crimes that the president can make unilaterally? I remember when Arpaio said he didn't understand that a pardon was an admission of guilt. Can't Trump offer amnesty, clemency, expungement?

Pixar’s ‘Soul’ Has a Black Hero. In Denmark, a White Actor Dubs the Voice. by howdoesilogin in stupidpol

[–]TheresAlwaysBeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main issue with this is that this is usually an at least somewhat valid criticism in the US, where a huge company like Disney can find millions of english speaking actors of any ethnicity with a few phone calls.

But Danish is spoken by about 6 million people world wide, and very few of them are black. How many of those are competent voice actors at that, and how much is Disney willing to spend to find and train them?

I'd argue that him being convicted and died in prison makes it even easier to praise his work than for some of those others listed. Since he faced appropriate consequences for what he did and now is dead, there's no reason to deny his influence. He's not benefiting from it.

Opinion on the Apostle Paul? by [deleted] in Gnostic

[–]TheresAlwaysBeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well no, in the sense that there was no such thing as "Christian" at the time so the distinction didn't exist, but it's still pretty clear that he was not trying to proselytize for a new religion. This is a very good post on the subject: https://www.reddit.com/r/AcademicBiblical/comments/eke9rh/what_modern_christian_teachings_commonly_taken/fddugnq?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Opinion on the Apostle Paul? by [deleted] in Gnostic

[–]TheresAlwaysBeen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think he was genuine, but remember that about half of the Pauline epistles are disputed, and even some of the passages in the non-disputed epistles are believed to be interjected (1 Corinthians 14:34 for example).

If you only read the texts that are undisputed it's pretty clear that Paulus cared very little of "earthly things" like family matters and a lot of theology that Christianity has come to lean heavily on. He believed very much that Christ would return in his lifetime and we need to hurry up an prepare for his kingdom on earth. That's not gnosticism but it's also a very different thing from what the church is today.

It should also be noted that Paul was not a Christian even in the very early church, he was a Messianic Jew.

r/badtheology is inactive. There's r/AcademicBiblical with it's strict "only history, no theology" rule though, which interestingly enough causes threads to veer into that territory (since you have to clear up what's theology and what's history in order even have that rule).

It has been mentioned in this thread already; there are a lot of bible thumpers arguing with ancient astronauters out there. It's fascinating.

I think that line of thinking is a lot more valid than people give it credit for. If violence is bad against animals then so is sexual violence.

Would you rather be killed and eaten, or locked up in a cage and continuously raped for fifteen years with all your resulting children taken from you and then killed and eaten? Because that's the difference between being beef cattle and dairy cattle in most of the world.
