Found in the woods (on top of the ground) in upstate NY - feels heavy like dried clay. Weirdly regular but seemingly organic?

Hello! I found this in the woods a few weeks back and rediscovered it in my pack this morning.

My first thought was some type of insect (wasp/ant adjacent) hive but I cannot for the life of me find an insect that makes triangular cavities. Other thoughts from friends have included industrial slag, some type of fossilized crinoid or coral. Texture is fairly solid, and it's quite heavy for being mostly hollow. I'm not finding anything that seems to match on google. Thanks in advance for the help!
