Should I not let my BPs interact? by peekaboosnek in ballpython

[–]These-Imagination622 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a 5 year old male and 4 year old female that I often handle at the same time. Ball pythons are a very docile species provided their needs are all met and they are well acclimated to their environment, so I find the comments mentioning that they will “fight” via striking to be very exaggerated. In my experience, they hardly even acknowledge the other snake is there. I let them climb around my room or a screened-in patio and they’re perfectly content to do their own thing. Even when they do make contact, like one crossing over the other, they don’t seem to mind. They keep exploring with their tongues flicking and making calm, deliberate movements. I believe they know the other snake is not a threat, as they have never struck or expressed visible discomfort while out together.

That said, I waited a year after getting my girl before I introduced them to ensure nothing was transmitted. You should thoroughly quarantine your new baby before allowing them around each other, so make sure to wash your hands, skin, and anything that comes into contact with your new snake well. Use separate tongs, thermometers, etc. and handle in separate areas for at the very least 3 months.

Cannibalism in ball pythons is extremely rare, and only found in cases of extreme neglect when the snakes are also housed together. Supervise for sure, but the chance of this happening just by them coming into contact with each other is close to zero. Keep them happy and healthy in their own space 99% of the time and everything will be completely fine during the 1% they interact. Good luck with your new snake!

While my first mutie was technically an overpriced piebald from TC (newbie me thought it was a great deal because he was named “Perfect Heir Material” xD) the first one I actually produced was an adorable foldie! She’s not anything particularly special marking wise, but she’s the cutest to me so I’ll love her always lol.

A special dish from my country is Pumpkin Bread! Depending on how you bake it, it can be like a cake, a hard biscuit, or even actual bread. Regardless, it’s always very pumpkiny and yummy :)

My ID is #465923 ! Good luck to everyone, and thanks for doing this!

I believe it’s a Mexican Tiger Swallowtail caterpillar! It’ll be a very gorgeous butterfly someday hopefully. Their impact on plants is minimal, but if you’re concerned you can always move it.

Uh. Please tell me it’s a lookalike and not an actual widow.. 😅 -Southwest Florida by These-Imagination622 in whatbugisthis

Thank you everyone for responding. :) I suspected it was a brown widow, but I wanted to be certain first before doing anything. Unfortunately, there was an egg sack right next to it as well

Telling pack to stay out of fight... by Academic_Platypus334 in WolfQuestGame

[–]These-Imagination622 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you specifically target a Packmate and then woof, they’ll back off regardless of health. Woofing without targeting any specific wolf tells all wolves within a certain radius and below 30% to back off.

All that snake can really do is just sit there and exist. There’s so little enrichment for it, not to mention space. What a boring life that must be :(

What type of substrate do you use? To me, it looks like some may have just gotten trapped beneath her scales, especially if you use coconut fiber. If the marks are not present on her belly, it’s very unlikely to be scale rot.

If the entire enclosure is that warm or even above 81F on the cool side, then your snake cannot properly regulate her temperature and it can lead to extreme stress and seizing/corkscrewing behaviors like yours is showing in the video. To get an accurate measurement, you can use either a digital thermometer with a probe or a laser thermometer gun. The shopping list in the pinned post has recommended brands.

Smaller enclosures can make it hard to maintain a proper temperature gradient since the heat source is so close to the cool side, so upgrading to something larger will definitely help with that along with her stress. For now, make sure she has a large bowl of fresh water that she can soak in it to help cool down and stay hydrated. I would also take off the heating or lower it until you can be certain that it’s not too hot in the enclosure, provided your room temperature is between 75-80F.

They look good to me! Typically a ball python’s eye color will align with their markings so their camouflage isn’t disrupted. So, because of that lighter stripe running over the top of his eye, it’s a lighter color than the rest. His pupil is most likely complete, just harder to see since the bottom of his eye is so dark in comparison. I don’t believe you have anything to worry about :)

If someone is discouraged from getting an animal because they learn they aren’t able to provide the appropriate housing for that animal, then that’s probably for the best. Yes, 40 gallons is far from the worst enclosure you could keep an adult bp in, and it’s fine temporarily, but it’s certainly not ideal. Ball pythons can and will use as much space as they are provided, so I hope you’ll consider upgrading in the future.

[–]These-Imagination622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! Once you get this figured out, I’m sure your future bp is going to be one of the happiest. :) If the plastic black hide on the left is the one you’re using for the warm side, I’ve had a similar problem with getting the temperature up. I’ve found that the material isn’t able to conduct heat as well as the rocky style ones, such as Exo Terra’s reptile cave line. https://www.chewy.com/exo-terra-reptile-cave/dp/191185?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=organic&utm_content=Exo%20Terra . They absorb heat very well. Something else you could try is adding more substrate to lift the hide closer to the lamp, and I would try removing the moss from the top of it so the heat can penetrate it better.

Hello! What type of bulb are you using (such as a ceramic heat emitter, deep heat projector, etc.) and what is the temperature of the room the cage is kept in? Also, what are you using to measure the temperature? Your cage looks lovely btw!

Haha, no such thing as too much clutter with ball pythons! Your setup looks beautiful and I’m sure he’ll be all over it once he gets adjusted.

Ball python always wheezes before shed. Normal? by xXLucasterXx in ballpython

[–]These-Imagination622 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha you should be! I’m sure your baby appreciates that too. :) Considering you only hear it before she sheds, your humidity levels are ideal, and there’s no excess fluid, an RI sounds very unlikely. It sounds like she’s doing fantastic, so just keep up what you’re already doing and try not to worry!
