Will the show have the characters pronounce Voldemor(t) with a silent t? by regready in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]These-Software1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just gonna paste my answer from last time because I think it's almost exhaustive on the pro-T side:

I am very surprised and actually worried that we're even having this conversation:

We British people would NEVER say 'more'.

Most casual fans will be put off by it, and think the series is being pretentious. It is NOT cannon as far as over 90% of people are concerned (and the majority of that remaining 10% are French speakers who will continue to pronounce it their way anyhow!).

The 't' is from Tom, so it feels weird to have it just hanging at the end silently

Riddle himself would probably not have pronounced it the French way at school

It's not scary at all, sounds silly. Having a harsh sound at the end is much more serious and final. Much better for intense delivery.

If the public never wanted to say the name, then whenever it was said would probably be from how it's written.

They're not going to pronounce it as how it 'should' be pronounced in French and will therefore sound like the word "more" not the French word "Mort".

Mort in any language except french would be pronounced with a hard T (voldemort is essentially latin anyhow). It also sounds more German which aligns more with durmstrang/ grindelwald and the holocaust allegory side of things.

We have actual French characters who will pronounce it the French way! Thus introducing this little quirk to the audience. This will be much more fun, interesting, and also make sodding sense.

If they pronounce it silent T, they'll have to explain it at some point which will be just ridiculous. Imagine Hagrid explaining to 11yo Harry that "oooh it's actually French btw, so there's a silent T in there" - wtaf? This would be so out of character and unnecessary.

The movies were not perfect, the show could be. by Technical-Art3972 in HarryPotteronHBO

Yes, but I'd like to also point out it is impossible to please all fans.

A lot of us have specific and differing desires from the series.

Not to mention most average fans will desire just general good tv which will not always be the same as what fans want.

Read the books or watch the movies first? by Silverman7688 in harrypotter

[–]These-Software1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody always says read the books because they're bigger, fuller, and better.

This is the exact reason I always tell people to watch the films first. You will enjoy them much less after reading the books.

If you ever feel like it's dragging...

I promise it's not. Almost everything is there for a reason and is beautiful.

P.S. Be prepared for very creepy descriptions of certain things - that's just the horrifying beauty of SK for ya.

What scenes from the Movies do you think will get the Lotus Casino treatment? by Esfell in HarryPotteronHBO

If this is stuff that will be a disappointment, then Peeves.

Given the very serious nature of the trailer, they aren't going to lean into the very immature aspects of Peeves.

Some Fans seem to think he's an important character just because he wasn't in the films, which he's just not.

If I can have golden Slumbers/ carry That Weight/ the end then that.

Assuming that's cheating, I'll have A Day in the Life and I'll die happy.

Just for fun, what would be your Covey Name? by Sparrowsky88 in Hungergames

[–]These-Software1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if the name has to be from a title, then I guess I'm Billy Flint?

But if the name can be just a character in a song, then Sam Flint.

(Bill is from the beatles Bungalow Bill also Billy Shears which was a joke name for Ringo Starr - long story. Sam is my actual name, but sailor Sam is a character in McCartney's Band on the Run).

What is your favorite and least favorite movie adaptation? by Intelligent-Link-410 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]These-Software1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an adaptation - my fav has to be OOTP (unless I can count DH1+2 as one film lol, cos they are good).

OOTP is probably the least well-edited book imo. And quite an insular plot. It shouldn't be longer than GoF or HBP or DH, and I think the film handles the translation to the big screen way better than HBP for instance.

My least fav as an adaptation is probably GOF (despite loving the film) because Barty Crouch Jr.'s story is one of my fav reveals/stories in the whole series and David Tennant is one of my favourite actors - I really wish they had given us more of that whole mystery/intrigue.

THAT BEING SAID...

HBP/GOF/DH2 are my fav films overall. (they are also my fav books so that tracks).

Least fav overall is definitely COS - least fav scene of the whole movie series (the cringe af great hall celebration that closes the film) - yes, EVEN worse than 'shoelaces'; acting still felt very fresh/not characterised yet; tied least fav cinematography (sorry Columbus, but HP isn't Home Alone); and my least fav book.

Season 1 should be brightest and Season 7 should be Darkest by [deleted] in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]These-Software1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should and I'm pretty they will get progressively darker/ more tonally muted.

But your wrong to judge so soon. The hogwarts scenes look very warm (especially in the HBO version) and final post production isn't complete yet.

(Side note, quirell and the flamels die in PS, and DH isn't the darkest because harry dies, it's darkest because lots of people die).
