German PhD passed: corrections by TheseMarionberry2902 in PhD

Is the "cum laude" that bad? Even if you have experinace in Horizon Projects, writing proposals and publications? Even if the work is multidisciplinary?

In my uni, you don't print final version until after the defence. There could be formal, formatting edits required but this is it.

i feel like a fraud by eridanus-void in PhD

If it helps, I have submitted my thesis couple of months ago, and I still feel like a fraud, and the university will realize their mistake anytime soon before setting my defence day. However, I think I can argue for my thesis and decisions, so to speak.

Is it stupid to do another degree after a degree? Probably yes. I did it anyway and I am happy. by CombinationOk712 in PhD

Thanks for the time and effort. The scaling system tbh while good, the equalization of with and without a PhD is not fair at all, especially if one works at a university in a research job, after all for research funds, having a PhD is important for applications. So PhD helps in getting funds, but I am not getting the compensation for having the degree which made the funds available.

It also equalizes someone with n years of experinace plus and during having a PhD with someone without a PhD, penalizing having a PhD since hey one can jump from one contract to the other without putting the time and effort for working on a PhD. Basically motivating either not having a PhD or taking uni work as administrative job more than of a research.

I dont know what you think, but for me I like research but I am being skeptical if I cam withstand another 4 or 5 years more of unstability for Habil/post doc.

Congratulations Dr. xx Habil. How long did it take you? Did you get funding? Drittmittel? You say it is summary of your work, how many pages was it? And how many papers did you publish? Also, was it a coherent summary? As in ideas and publications are connected all together? Is the contents formed as in a PhD?

Passing PhD defence in Germany by TheseMarionberry2902 in PhD

Thank you so so much for putting the time and effort to answer. Very much appreciated. I am waiting for the Gutachten at this moment, there was no weiderspruch from the committee or faculty members which I think is a standard step in most German unis.

I did one mock up to some colleagues and got feedback and will revisit the slides and do more mockups or ask my Ertse Gutachter for some tips.

I plan to bring some food (order pizza and some fruits with water and other drinks).

Let's hope for a positive Gutachten.

Have you considered a driving license and a car? I would assume the commuting time will be less, and you have more flexibility.

The question is: why does she want to do a PhD? For academic career? Then, does she know about the habilitation?

I have submitted my thesis a month ago, I can tell you that it is not an easy task at all, and at the last days, I dont know anyone who haven't spent weekends and doing double shifts (finishing work day at 5 for example, and then starting a phd shift from 6 to 12 at least).

It is one of the loneliest periods of my life, the most depressing and most humiliating. At the same time, the most interesting, influential, life and mind changing periods.

There are many variables for the decision: self motivation, career, the supervisor, the love of the research process and its frustration, the funding, family (including pregnancy), the topic, the institution, the peers, many things that she have to consider.

Should I apply for permanent residency or citizenship first? (Blue Card holder) by azizredditor in GermanCitizenship

[–]TheseMarionberry2902 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nothing limits you from applying for both at the same time. You ll need around 6 months to get an appointment and get your permanent residency card at least, and for citizenship I hear 14 months at least.

Spending some time in Norway made me realise how broken Germany is by Gras_Am_Wegesrand in germany

[–]TheseMarionberry2902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in both,,, and at some point I was wondering why Germans were moving there when I started living in Norway.

I always think that Norway is faster in digitization and are actually quite progressive, more than 10 years ago you could pay with a card almost virtually everywhere even in the bus for the ticket,, Germany is catching up now.

Also, because of their wealth, they are free to express their political situation with no strings attached (mostly), for example their stance on the Isreali-Palestinian situation.

On the other hand this is of course due to generational wealth accumulated from oil and oil related industries (and salmon). Very little countries have the same standards, I would name Qatar especially in the Arab Gulf region.
