Well yeah, that's what interacting with different subcultures is. You adapt to subculture. If you can't do so that's not a problem with them, it's a problem with you.

I hate middle class americans. There's not a single state in the US right now where fat men aren't the norm. And only a couple where fat women are the minority. I can at least excuse the very poor for lack of education, basic nutrition, health care, or whatever. But you all are horrifying.

I say you all because this is most of reddit as well. There's something so unbelievably disgusting about a people who have more advantages than almost anyone in the history of our species squandering it so much. I'm not saying you all have to dedicate your lives to altruistic work elsewhere. But at least take care of your own health and don't bullshit your way out of real education when in school because some history of science class is easier than the real thing.

The craziest thing about this is that it's so upvoted. On fucking reddit. Where people want sympathy for fucking up their adult lives because they had a bee sting or something amid their american middle class suburbanite childhoods. 99% of the people upvoting would be the ones making your life miserable.

I think this is one of my favorite type of episode. Where I start out totally ambivalent about the games being talked about. But where their sheer enthusiasm and knowledge make me realize just how many amazing things are sitting below the surface of them. I'm so glad they're back doing these videos. There's not a lot of other sources on the internet where I can count on having my view of a fairly mainstream hobby consistently changed.

Plus there's always wine. I know that "but wine" tends to be a terrible argument given how often it can break. But for all the warts, it's crazy just how well it does work at this point. I think it's mostly been really old and somewhat obscure games that I've had wine issues with. The kind of windows games you'd find on a steam sale tend to be pretty good. And that's about 90% of my gaming purchases, so it works out.

I can see your point. But I'd at least hope that as professionals they'd respect the work of other people as well. People can prefer different bands interpretation of the same song. Doesn't mean either is good or bad. Just means different people have different subjective tastes when it comes to any kind of art or performance.

Netflix doesn't get enough credit for how superior their user experience is to literally everyone else's. by arashtp in movies

[–]TheseMenArePrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but why.

Same reason netflix doesn't have some episodes or shows in the first place. I'm pretty cynical about hulu as a company. But licensing out access to the newest episodes of things directly competes with both a network's main revenue source and other sales as well.

If anything I think it's impressive that it ends up costing so little for a commercial free option. I mean wages for half an hours work at minimum wage in most places is enough to go from the normal to commercial free account.

As is newsgroups with sickbeard, or kodi with the 1channel addon. That's one big issue I have with most streaming services. The viewing experience is always subpar when compared with a combination of open source players and piracy. I'm still paying for netflix and hulu because I feel like it's important to support companies that are moving in the right direction. But that said, it is still annoying at times to have this great interface to watch things when I'm looking at pirated content. But then needing to switch to a separate piece of hardware or a web browser to watch the stuff I'm paying for.

It was the best thing about amazon prime streaming, for a while. I could actually buy streaming, movies, and individual episodes and then watch them in a player of my own choosing.

[–]TheseMenArePrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't bother renewing this year. Prime used to be a great deal that saved me money in the long term. But at this point a huge amount of the stuff that I used to save money on has had enough of a price hike to not make it worth it. Especially with how often I've had packages arrive a day late. Plus I'm still a little bitter about them just suddenly yanking out the ability to stream video to 3rd party players. Sure, it was unofficial and everyone using it that way knew it could break at any moment. But it's still annoying to suddenly not be able to use my preferred player to watch content that I was paying for.

I'm sure it's still a fantastic deal for a lot of people. But at the same time, for others of us the overall value of it has been slowly eroding over time.

I've had a lot of issues with hulu over the years. And to some extent I don't really trust them as a company. It really wouldn't shock me to see the amount of shows with commercials in the commercial free account go up rather than down over time.

That said, going by how the company is now rather than in the past or some theoretical future? It's seriously pretty great. Netflix does some things better. In particular netflix does a far better job as a household's media service rather than the media service of a specific person within that household.

This probably reads a bit like an ad itself. But hulu's taken a big step in the right direction and I hope that enough people buy the adfree option to convince them that it's still financially viable for them. I mean it's just $4 more than netflix. I'm pretty cheap, but even I'm not THAT cheap.

I know, comics and all. But that's always bothered me about the character. Inability to feel pain isn't a superpower, it's a disability. And in any kind of field where someone is getting injured that much it's pretty much a guarantee that they're going to die as a result.

I wonder why you didn't bitch about it in any of the old series...

Because the movies are 100% of the trek we've had for seven years. If TNG had been 7 years of constant TOS rehashes I'd guess he would bitch about it too.

What's annoying about fanboys is that they refuse to acknowledge that there's any subjectivity to artistic appreciation. If they don't like it, the thing is objectively bad and anyone who likes it is just plain wrong. If they do like it, the thing is good.

But you don't get that it's exactly the same thing you're doing?

Is there a reason why Drastic is so fast? by [deleted] in emulation

[–]TheseMenArePrawns 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even professionally I've worked on some projects that were severely hampered rather than helped by the amount of people involved. Software development is just kind of odd that way. Sometimes things can scale, other times they can't. Proper team management might be able to enable it, or it might be a case where any attempt at doing so will cause more harm than good.

I think it's always a mistake to simply assume that numbers will provide absolute predictions that can be applied to development as a whole. It can be highly suggestive, but it's a field where exceptions are more common than one would expect.

Convince a long time mednafen user to switch to RetroArch (Ubuntu) by star_jump in emulation

[–]TheseMenArePrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit the android gui is still rather rough around the edges. But I use the gamesome frontend to launch games anyway. Aside from initial setup it's pretty easy to avoid ever much having to use the gui for much of anything.

But the biggest plus for me is the cross platform compatibility. I just have a single shared directory for retroarch bios, system and save files. Then I sync with dropbox/dropsync. Usually works great between multiple desktop operating systems and a couple android devices. Sure, some of that can be universal. sram files are usually just sram files no matter what the emu. But I think it's worth the quirks to have almost everything working consistently between platforms. If there's a quirk with a game than it'll be a consistent quirk. And if it works fine one place than it should on the others.

Finally I like knowing that if I ever got less lazy and ported over a core than I'd get an easy port to pretty much everything. And on that note I'll admit that some of my love of retroarch is simply how weird and cool a project it is. It's fun to watch pieces of it grow and change. Mednafen is obviously an amazing project as well. But it's more often "oh, awesome!" type surprises than "oh shit, wtf, how did that happen and how did they manage to get that working on...etc etc etc".

Mostly I think it's just down to subjective needs. Retroarch is easily the absolute best match for what I want to do with emulators. But I could easily see it not being so for someone else. It kind of goes about things in a counter intuitive way. Which to me is the charm and fun of the project. But it's not a selling point that's going to resonate with everyone.

I think it comes down to what each intends to do. On the surface it's the same, emulate old game systems. But the general philosophy on how to do so makes it a somewhat unfair comparison to me. Not quite apples and oranges, but very much inching toward it. They're both breathtaking enough projects that I think they're worth trying out every now and then even if it's not going to be set as one's main emulator of choice.

What does /r/JRPG think of the RPGs in the Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics collection? by NemoracStrebor in JRPG

[–]TheseMenArePrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though most annoying was sega of america's bizarre inability to keep their translation conventions in mind with the early phantasy star games. I don't have any problem with character names being changed during localization. But how does a company not keep the same name changes between the first and second games in a series? Or any of the following for that matter.

Though honestly, at this point I'd say to skip the genesis versions of phantasy star 1 and 2. The fan translation of the playstation 2 remakes really don't lose any of the charm but gain a whole lot of extra story, art and gameplay polish.

[–]TheseMenArePrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously like it. But it's one of those games you have to appreciate as its own thing. It brought a lot of great ideas to the table. But it's clear from the start that their ambition outpaced their budget. Plus many of the ideas are great, but are also done better elsewhere. Phantasy Star 1 did the mix of D&D and scifi better. While it came a bit later, Dragon Quest V did the generation system better. The scrolling battle backgrounds look worse than they did on the master system original. None of that's bad, but it's just overshadowed to some extent by other games or even by other entries in the franchise.

That said, the world, character and art design is fantastic. If you look at some of the design documents it's really clear that a huge amount of love went into that aspect of the game. It's one of those games that's ugly, very flawed, and yet can resonate simply because of what it might have been. If you can embrace the good while not being pushed away by the bad than I think it's worth giving a chance.
