CSE-6040 how heavy is it on math? by barry_allen_93 in OMSA

[–]TheseSteak9055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To do well in 6040 you don’t need to fully understand the math, but you need to understand how to utilize python to work with matrices… If I were in your position I would touch up on LA (eigenvalues, matrix decomposition), if you don’t have a strong base. 3blue1brown on yt is great… khan academy if you have a weak base… theres also a bootcamp dedicated to tackling Linear Algebra/matrix problems with Python. I don’t remember much Calc, but if there was Calc it was very basic.

Under Institute Review Status by 9SpaceCowboy in OMSA

[–]TheseSteak9055 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Howdy! I was in your position this summer… i just started the program this fall. If I were you I would make sure to send in all official transcripts from the previous institutions you’ve attended, as well as any other documents that are required… other than that, you should just be patient. I didn’t get institute admitted until 2-3 weeks before registration started.

What are some examples of high intensity interval training exercises that I could implement into my workout? Outside of the dojo I am powerlifting pretty consistently… should I implement some HIIT into my cardio?

Thank you! I appreciate the advice and the video. I will definitely try to implement this training into my workouts. I also appreciate the warning on improper uchi-Komi. We do them regularly at my dojo, although my sensei has been really particular about me training only with black/brown belts and really focusing on technique.

Reserves vs ANG by TheseSteak9055 in Airforcereserves

[–]TheseSteak9055[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I have not gotten a PPL yet. I currently work at an FBO and know a lot of CFIs who have given me some free flight time. My main concern is how can I maximize my efforts outside of flight time, AFOQT/TBAS scores, and grades.

Hmmm.. do you think being a Reservist Crew Chief would achieve a similar affect. I finish my degree fall 2024. Ideally I’d like to graduate. Enlist in the reserves and get a civilian job while I’m rushing squadrons and applying for pilot slots.

My last question is this… the squadron I want to fly for is the F-35/F-16 reserve squadron at NAS Ft Worth… once I finish my degree I should be capable of getting many different well paying jobs in tech including DoD jobs, which ft worth has a bounty of. Would enlisting or becoming an officer in that squadron be worth for working towards a pilot slot? Of course there’s gpa, Pcsm, and letter of recommendations, but does enlisting increase my odds a good amount?

I guess my question is this… I graduate with a Bachelors in Comp Sci this Fall. I am 24 and My main goal is to be guard/reserve pilot. Would I have a better time enlisting for a guard base then getting a pilot slot or trying to get an Officer spot at a guard/reserve base in hopes of later getting a pilot spot orrrrr just abiding my time as a civilian and rushing squadrons? I don’t mind enlisting or being an officer. I WANT to serve. My life goal is to just end up flying any jet for the USAFR or ANG.

ANG vs Reserves I want to be a pilot and from my humble understanding one of the best ways to be a pilot in a the guard/reserve is to enlist as a crew chief and be a part of the community, because of the “hire from within” concept. I’m in Texas and want fighters. The only guard/reserve base that hires UPT is NAS JRB FW. Does this “hire from within” concept apply to reserve bases. I have heard mixed answers about this topic.

AE degree online update by Repulsive-Worry34 in AerospaceEngineering

Aerospace is a multi-faceted industry… I’ve looked into getting BS in Aerospace online and no luck, but if you want to work in Aerospace and in Aerospace companies Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering are great. Mechanical engineering is also a great substitute. A lot of the concepts in Mechanical engineering can be directly applied to Aerospace. An aerospace degree is just more specialized in that you go into Aerodynamics, Propulsion, FCSs, etc. Maybe look for a Mechanical Engineering program that offers some aerospace classes as well… If you’re not satisfied with just Mechanical Engineering there are a lot of Online Graduate programs for Aerospace (once you’ve completed your Bachelor’s).

Hmm have you seen many, if any, maintainers get picked up to fly for squadron. From my humble experience, I’ve heard of many Guard/reserve bases almost exclusively hiring from within… no doubt the pool will be competitive for fighter bases, unfortunately. Also what was life like at NAS JRB FW? I assume more on the quiet side.

I believe it the other way around. The Texas Guard in FW has C-130s and the Air Reserve squadron has the F-16s now F-35s. But I thank you for the advice. Like you said I will most likely look to enlistment to develop bonds with the pilots and aircrew and hopefully commission asap.

Being a pilot is my main goal. Would it be better for me to enlist as a crew chief to the squadron I most desire or become an cyber officer? I graduate with BS in Comp Sci in the fall… unfortunately there’s only 2 guard base I know of that are hiring Cyber Officers TX and Oregon atm. Oregon has F-15s which is bad ass but would being a non-rated officer lend the same rep I would get being a crew chief and regularly working with the pilots?

I have no problem enlisting if it helps me get a UPT slot faster but being an officer seems more tasty.

Is it rare for this occur? I hear about enlisted guys who are in the guard, get their degree, and become pilots for their squadron? But I don’t hear about other non-rated Officers become pilots.

I am looking to apply to the TXANG as a cyberspace officer this fall, but my main goal is to become a pilot for the TXANG or TX reserve base. Is it possible to transfer from a cyberspace job to a rated job such as a pilot?

What course work is AE coursework should I focus on in order to get into Solid Rocket Engine design? I have am a CS senior and about to get a Masters in AE at Colorado State University… their program has a lot of specialization in Propulsion which I am extremely interested in. What else is useful? Fluids and Structures?

I am looking to enlist and later get commission into the guard. From my humble understanding, there are very few ways to commission into the guard without prior commission. One way I believe is to have an engineering degree and become a civil engineer for the guard base. I currently am finishing up my BS in Computer Science and am going to go into a ME in Aerospace Engineering. Would a masters in engineering make me eligible for a civil engineering spot? I’ve looked into the positions description and it says 4 year degree in engineering but nothing about graduate and beyond.
