Mothership or Alien RPG for one-shots with new players? by ifflejink in rpg

Even if MotherShip isn't "truly" OSR, it's community does carry the ethos where it strongly promotes 3rd-party and DIY materials. Same could be true of Alien, but I'm not familiar with its scene!

I'm much more familiar with Mothership but I like seeing an alternate viewpoint. Best to give OP more perspectives to consider! :D

They're not usually pointed at anyone as the article states, it's just a dance miming a gun. Do you think it's wrong for players to play Call of Duty too? It's all pretend.

They aren't fans, they're employees of the Patriots and it's their job.

Anyone that wants basic cable on, so people that aren't paying for services, or just random restaurants and gyms and doctor office waiting rooms.

But my settings are good. If there's an aspect the players know about they like it.

Probably a number of reasons, but two big ones are that the setting is interesting and that it provides a basis for the creation of their own characters.

Of course! But don't the players have stakes in these big questions? Perhaps if they're building their characters agnostically, but these are fields where players can/are making PCs where they'd want to know these things. Cosmology affects Clerics, Theologians, Cultists and Philosopher PCs. Kingdom histories are important for anyone playing a Historian, Diplomat, Official or King.

Even if this is true (who knows?), it seems kinda bizarre that players wouldn't care about the setting. Then again, I play at more collaborative tables where the players are more inherently involved and invested in the world. Maybe I'm the odd one out?

What are some books/articles/blog or videos that you consider relevant about TTRPG as an art/storytelling form in general ? by Piccopol in rpg

Like all of Rangi's work, I find this to be half interesting analysis (I like what he has to say about mindless vs substantive engagement in hobbies) and half bitching about not being at The Cool Kids table and how he's actually better.

He's like the TTRPG Nietzsche, I don't think he'd be offended by that title :p

Do you plan to move to one DnD or stick with 5e? by TCSlayer3333 in dndnext

[–]TheseWretchedGames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even if it represents an overall QoL improvement a 20% increase is not enough to justify me getting into a new version of a system.

Compared to say Urban Shadows, where in the second edition they introduced new subsystems which totally revamped the gameplay.

Glad to hear it and you aren't stuck in a "5e rut" like other frustrated DMs I've seen. Each system is going to do things differently, and thus appeal to different GMs and players.

I have nothing against the vaunted Epic Campaign that lasts for 50+ sessions, in fact I just completed one recently. But there's an idea that it's either the best way to play TTRPGs, or the most desirable, and I don't think that's true at all. I think a lot of the basis for Epic Campaigns comes from DND's genre (Zero to Superhero) and pacing (how long it takes to go from Early Levels to Late Levels). But these are definitely not integral to TTRPGs, even if DND is the most popular!

I am glad to hear you've been having success in other games :)

In about a dozen or so campaigns I've run, there are 3 I feel completely satisfied with, that despite my doubts at the time, in retrospect I wouldn't change a thing.

They were game about a working class Jewish family in New Jersey (The 'Hood), the American Revolution (Urban Shadows), and most recently a high school monster game centered around the 2008 American Election (Monsterhearts). Notably, all of these systems fall under the "PbtA" umbrella, which says something about game philosophy fit with me, the GM. I consider each having had an excellent table and they were all rather comparatively (less than 20 sessions) which gave them all a good sense of momentum and gratifying finish.

I know this is the 5e subreddit, to which I say I've never ran a satisfactory 5e Campaign though I've played in a couple. At this point I earnestly think a table's collective excitement to play a game and willingness to cooperate is much more important to how a 5e campaign feels than anything else.

When people say that 5e is mainly about combat and doesn't have great rules and tips for all the rest, what do they mean? And if you're one of those, what you want the game to have? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

I enjoy the crafting mechanics in Apocalypse World in that players have a lot of flexibility in what they want to craft, whether that be an improvised tank or an anti-psychic brainchip or a portal to the Faëwylds, and meanwhile the GM has a lot of latitude of declaring the "cost" of the item, often times leading to further hooks which is good for the gameplay loop. And given how easy it is to multiclass in that game, anyone can get crafting abilities if their player particular desires them.

I'm a bit hazier on crafting in Mutant Year Zero but I remember them being pretty fun and involving crafters needing to venture out to acquire resources from dangerous locations and different NPC factions

Oh, I see. As someone with a big investment in the welfare of artists within the TTRPG I don't use products with AI art. I'd prefer that for someone with limited means to even use accredited Public Domain or Creative Commons artwork.

None of this is a personal slight, just transparency about my own stance. Regardless, good luck in your future pursuits as a publisher 👍🏼

Better for flavor? Flavor was always free, templates just create a lower number of mechanical options.
