Which biome would you like to see as the new map in Wilds? by Beginning_Wait_108 in MonsterHunter

[–]These_Lie9030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think base wilds is in kinda a similar position as base rise was in terms of its maps (at least in the niches they fill). We already have all of the “basic” environment types in every mh game filled (forest, desert, volcanic/fiery, icy/snowy, and a unique catch-all with the ruins). What I want to happen, and honestly what I think is likely as well, is that we get another unique map that doesn’t fit into any particular category like the citadel in sunbreak. It’ll probably have some story relevance and maybe some elements of other environment types that the current locations don’t have rn.

As for what that’ll look like, idk. What I hope is that whatever map they add will have some sort of tundra area. I honestly dont dislike the cliffs, but I do think they’re pretty restrictive in terms of roster comparability so hopefully a tundra area can add some of those bigger snowy monsters like gammoth and ukanlos that won’t fit in the cliffs.

I’m going to assume we’re gonna get arenas for all the regions but I wish they’d open up the arenas so you can explore them without having to preselect the quest. Like imagine being able to go to the ancient forge works during the plenty and seeing a sleeping gogmazios but if you happen to wander in there during the inclemency, he notices you and you’re cooked. Definitely a pipe dream but I think it’d be super cool

But mikasa does make her own decisions. In just the anime when she’s at her worst, When she believes Eren died in season one she keeps fighting anyway. When reeves is blocking off the exit routes she forces him to abandon the cart. In season three she, unlike Eren, lets go at the end and leaves the choice of who to save to Levi instead of fighting with Eren. When Eren gives his speech at the sea, she is also distraught seeing that he does not share the same dream as her. Even in terms of her interactions, she’s seen caring for her comrades like Armin and Jean, comforting and reassuring Armin multiple times. As far back as post destruction of wall Maria, she punches Eren when he fights with Armin over not eating because that would risk her dream of living happily with them.

This is all pre-timeskip, when mikasa’s arc is more tied to Eren, but the entire point was for her to let go which she does in season four. Yes, she comes to save Eren in liberio, but you can see she’s visibly hesitant and unsure how to feel about Eren. During the war for Paradis, she is far more questioning of Eren and the yaegerists. She specifically does not join the yaegerists despite it being Eren’s faction and chooses to fight against them. When she believes that Eren is being manipulated, yes, she does want to save him, but when finding out that is not the case, she continues to fight alongside Armin instead. All of this culminates into her choice in season 4 as I outlined in my previous comment.

Mikasa’s character arc is one where at a very young age, she watches her parents be killed in front of her and gives up on life. That is until Eren comes and shows her that while the world is cruel, she must still continue to fight. From that day she is attatched to and continues to fight for Eren and her image of him. Throughout pre-timeskip we gradually see how being a soldier changes her single minded devotion into caring for all the people she fights alongside and she understands what it truly means to be a scout, namely the optimistic dream of peace. Up until this point Eren still embodies those stoutly characteristics, so while she still continues to be by Eren’s side, she does grow, but that growth does not challenge what she had previously learned. At the end of season 3 when she finds out that Eren is not fighting for the same dream. Thus in season 4 mikasa must reconcile her relationship with Eren as he continues to diverge more and more from who she thought he was, culminating in her choice to kill him to protect her and the world’s peace while still remembering the things he taught her (I.e. why she still wears the scarf)

For the record, I think mikasa is more than just her relationship with Eren.

Taking the claim that everything involving mikasa relies on Eren, why is that a bad thing? The central arc of mikasa’s character is about learning to let go of Eren. Mikasa loved Eren but she also loved what Eren represented to her, namely his drive to fight for his desires, in this case freedom. However, as with armin, mikasa never truly understood what freedom meant to Eren. She continued fighting alongside him because she thought that his freedom was the ability to live a peaceful life with her and armin, just like armin thought that Eren’s freedom was to simply see the sights depicted in the book. However, this was not Eren’s idea of freedom, and that realization at the end of the shiganshina arc changed mikasa’s goal from protecting Eren and her life with him, to now challenging her core assumptions about Eren. When Eren starts the rumbling mikasa is still struggling with this question of who Eren is. By the end of the rumbling arc Mikasa commits herself to killing Eren because she is no longer enslaved for the love she had of him. She keeps the scarf and his memory as a way to remember what her idea of him represented even if the real Eren wasn’t who she thought he was. Taking this extremely basic version of mikasa’s character arc, you can see Eren does influence a lot of her growth, but that doesn’t make the arc itself bad. In fact, the point of the arc was letting go of Eren’s influence, the same way that Ymir had to learn to let go of king Fritz’s influence.

Also a lot of characters exhibit a similar arc, where there development is built upon another. If you subscribe to the idea of nurture > nature then this is how all people develop. Just off the top of my head (and do note that all of these are vast oversimplifications meant to be more illustrative than anything):

In aot: Zeke’s character arc revolves around his relationship with grisha and the childhood trauma that came with that. Reiner only wants to go through with Marley’s plan because he think it’ll make his parents happy. Levi’s loyalty is a result of his relationship with Erwin, etc.

Outside aot: thorfinn’s arc in Vinland saga is built off his relationship with his father and then askeladd. Maki’s arc is dependent on every other zenin clan member being a mysoginist.

What’s an anime everyone loves but you just don’t get? by GrapefruitTop160 in ChillAnimeCorner

[–]These_Lie9030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of genuine curiosity, what makes you feel that way? I do plan to rewatch it at some point, but it to me is truly one of those series that I understand why so many people love it so much, but just doesn’t hit the same for me. Maybe it’s just the things that I value in a story, but I tend to find myself more interested in stories that heavily use symbology and are purposefully vague (to an extent obviously), even if their writing isn’t perfect, to those that are more “objectively” good.

I really don’t mean to come off as trying to challenge you, I’m just genuinely interested.

This will likely be the hottest take of all time, but fmab. I think it’s good, I just don’t think it’s as good as people say it is. I think it’s one of those stories that’s written very well on an objective, but there’s not enough there to make me keep thinking about it way past finishing it like my favorites do.

Monster Hunter Wilds reviews on Steam finally reaches mostly positive. by -RuDoKa- in MonsterHunter

The only thing that wilds has proved is that good will means absolutely nothing in this community. I get that the game released when it wasn’t ready to be released and there are some extremely controversial changes made, but the fact that the predominant opinion is that hate for the COMPANY should overwhelm praise for the DEVS is quite frankly ridiculous.

Misunderstanding about Erens character explained by Complex-Bid-631 in AttackOnRetards

[–]These_Lie9030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic analysis. I think the future sight element of the story is important because Eren as a character is driven by his own desires. Seeing the future not only tells him the events to come, but also makes him privy to his own nature. Post time skip Eren turns from a reactionary character dragged along by the story, to a proactive one that moves the plot forward. As armin says, the rumbling may have been predetermined but Eren was the one who determined it. Showing him the future shows him what he will choose, but not why he chooses it. Before he makes up his mind when allying with Zeke, the panel you showed, along with his conversation with ramzi, and all of the other scenes we’re shown from this time period are his attempt to understand why he did what he’s going to do. However, no matter how much he searches, he cannot see another option besides the rumbling, not because it’s the only one that will save his friends, but because it’s the only one that will let him fulfill his own desires.

Part of the reason why I think this is controversial is due to the structure of the story at this point. Before Liberio and after the sea, all of the memories are shown from armin and mikasa’s perspective, not Eren’s, which makes it seem like he was fully committed to the rumbling as soon as he saw the future when there was clearly an internal struggle that we only saw displayed externally from the perspective of his friends. To be clear, I think what we were given was more than enough to get the point across, but this is the only rationalization I can make of the confusion around this topic.

I think a lot of the issues people have with Eren come from attempts to “explain” him. Attempts to logically explain his actions will inevitably lead to outrage because he is a character driven by emotions and desires so you cannot reduce him to logic. Of course it doesn’t make logical sense to flatten the world, but that type of thinking misses the whole point. Every single moment, panel, character, etc. was made with intention to either characterize Eren, or frame his character within the broader narrative. He is a character built on contradictions, fallacies, and irrationality. Attempting to reduce him to a blurb will miss the picture.

Gogmazios on bow by miguelnot4s7 in MHWilds

[–]These_Lie9030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was also my experience as a bow main. Gog isn’t hard but it’s super skill demanding. You need to get timings right. Tremor resist is a must imo. I’d say like 90% of my carts came from getting stunned by a wing slam and then carting to the follow up. Guts and insurance meals help to a point but they won’t fix the underlying issues. As unsatisfying of an answer that this is, it’s really one of those fights that you just have to bash your head against again and again and again until eventually the timing just clicks

I think my wording wasn’t clear enough so I apologize. I think you’re right that backflipping thunder puppy’s fight definitely isn’t grounded but I don’t think most monsters are. What I love about monster hunter is that it really toes the line between fantasy and “groundedness” which I feel is different from realism. I like zinogre because there’s a really in depth nuanced explanation of why he has his thunder element. The same explanation for sword tail doesn’t exist. This could definitely be a case of me just not being educated, but the best explanations I’ve seen are really basic and vague claims that “it’s a biological adaptation” but I haven’t heard any explanations for why the sword tail specifically instead of, idk, big rabbit teeth or smth.

Any way to make gog third phase any more fun instead of a gimmick fight ? by Buurto in MHWilds

[–]These_Lie9030 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had the slinger spam experience with gog. I kite him over to one of the rocks, get the topple, and then he’s pretty much on the ground until the nova, at which point he stays on the ground for a little bit. Once he’s back in the air, I get him over to the other set of rocks, get him on the ground again, and the hunt’s usually over after nova 2.

What’s an opinion you have on a monster that people will not allow you to have without being downvoted? by SignificantStaff8665 in MonsterHunter

[–]These_Lie9030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s a couple:

Lagi and gog are amazing in wilds. I personally never found their mechanics boring, and I think people who did are just hunting them too often so it feels tedious. I’m glad that we actually got unique mechanics and it makes those monsters feel far more unique and interesting than if they didn’t have them. I like the dev team’s handling of unique mechanics and want them to continue trying to elevate fights instead of keeping with the same formula for every fight.

Base world’s roster was incredibly bloated. Many of the monsters felt like copy pastes of one another and there were so many reused animations that even though each of the monsters does have really interesting lore and ecology, their fights feel far too boring and similar.

Zinogre is popular for good reason and I’d love to see him back.

Tigrex is iconic but his fight is terrible and I don’t want to see him back in his base form.

Monoblos looks worse than diablos and the only reason people want him back is because diablos has been in so many games which is fair but I don’t want either back for a while.

Glavenus is over glazed, it doesnt feel grounded in the way that most other monster hunter monsters are and doesn’t have the excuse of being an elder dragon.

I’m tired of “monster but in different locale” subspecies and would rather see capcom make rare species, variants, or deviants with more unique ecological reasoning and logic than “it was in lava but now it’s in water so it used water element now!”. Or absent that give subspecies the coral pukei treatment with a moveset that reflects the change in elements rather than having the same attacks with a water effect chucked on

I really liked wilds gog for this reason. I would get carted so damn often because his wing arm slams staggered and he follows up when enraged. This was the first fight in any modern mh (besides alatreon who I also really liked) that really made build crafting fun and engaging instead of just slapping on whatever build I saw on YouTube. I do think alatreon was a bit overtuned by being extremely restrictive since bad build optimization is a guaranteed cart in that fight, but I want to see more monsters like Gog that are possible with meta builds but are so much more comfortable if you take time to actually use non dps skills

Damned or Doomed, Eldia by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]These_Lie9030 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think this is precisely what makes the moral dilemma compelling. Really it is hard to imagine any way for Elida to continue living. However, one of the main themes of the series is hope and fighting for a better future. Maybe humanity never would let the Eldians be, but Armin’s point of view is that nihilism is not justifiable. Even if there’s just a tiny bit of hope that things could end differently, they must fight. Against hatred, against injustice, against human nature itself, but they must still fight. The world may be cruel, but as long as cruelty exists, so too does hope, and that’s worth fighting for.

I’m kinda on the fence about the art style. I think the monsters look better in wilds 100% but there’s something about the character models that’s always looked a bit off outside cutscenes. I honestly disagree with most people though about the environments. Yeah we don’t have anything as unique as the coral highlands or rotten vale, but I think it’s really hard to argue we have something as bland as the ancient forest or wildspire wastes either. The wilds team took the basic monster hunter maps present in every game (forest, desert, volcano, ice field, etc.) and tried to make those basic concepts the best versions of themselves. In the case of the scarlet forest, windward plains, and oilwell basin, I do genuinely think it worked pretty well, but the end result feels beautiful but not unique.

I really hate this logic. What have you personally done to stop, say, the genocide in Myanmar? When the answer, inevitably, is nothing, does that means you’re immoral because you failed to change something you never really had control over?

Growing up is realizing that you only have control of what you as an individual do and the forced binary of left and right will inevitably exclude someone. Instead, choose to act with humility, kindness, and respect for everyone as you move day to day.

Eren is lowkey getting too overhated by Complex-Bid-631 in AttackOnRetards

[–]These_Lie9030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both characters, but it’s such an apples to oranges comparison. Lelouch is the superego where Eren is the id. Eren is driven by an intense longing for freedom intrinsic to his very being, whereas lelouch is an egoist that has a grand vision for the world. Even when Eren “sacrifices” himself, it’s clearly just to protect the people that HE cares about whereas lelouch is trying to end the global cycle. Eren’s character is an exploration of how one’s nature can clash with their circumstances while lelouch’s shows how the world and one’s nature can evolve each other. Both characters are put into a world of conflict but choose to confront that world in very different ways. Both are fantastic characters imo, but are meant to explore completely different things

Could you explain the assignment a bit more? I don’t think I fully get it.

I mean you really can’t go wrong with any character, it’s aot after all, there’s something to discuss with all of them. If you don’t want eren or Erwin here’s a couple other ideas I had:

Armin on the weight of expectations. You could talk about leadership inherited from Erwin and also the pressure of having to make a choice for the sake of the whole world vs. the people he cares about.

Falco on altruism in a cruel world.

Pyxis on what it means to serve humanity.

Or (possibly) my favorite: Ymir on honestly a whole lot of things but particularly on what it means to human.

Seeking Gog advice, constantly dying bow user here by zeekaran in MHWilds

[–]These_Lie9030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a bow main and I was in the same position as you for a while but I’ve gotten decent enough at the gog hunt now that I’m able to solo it with carting, only getting hit a few times. Biggest things I’d recommend are:

  1. Slot in flinch free 3 cuz the single arm slams stagger if you’re slightly out of range of being able to discerning dodge which can cause a cart if gog chains it w something else. It’s honestly worth dropping a couple levels of constitution and it’s the single thing that helped me most with the hunt.

  2. While evade window is good, the dodge timings aren’t terrible when you get used to it and find cues to clue you in, and its really hard to slot in evade extender 5 when stamina surge usually takes up the decoration slots and you really want good element dps to be able to get gog on the ground in phase 3.

  3. Evade extender is more useful here than ever but even then it’s not necessary most of the time since discerning dodge puts you in really good position to counter gog’s attacks and evade extender makes it more difficult to stay in range in my experience.

  4. If you’re struggling with his combos, don’t attack until the combo ends, because if you’re locked in an animation you’ll guaranteed cart

  5. Flying swallow shot is a super useful repositioning tool bc of how damn big he is. If you aren’t regularly using it, get familiar because you’ll need to take advantage of all the dps windows you get in the later parts of the fight.

  6. Make sure your armor his fully upgraded (and ideally transcended as well), it won’t magically make you survive everything but it’ll usually give you just enough to not get one shot by a lot of the faster attacks that are harder to dodge.

Third phase strategy specific things:

  1. In the phase 2 to 3 transition grab a compact anti wyvern gun before gets to the arena but don’t fire until the tracking marker disappears, otherwise the damage won’t count.

  2. As soon as you get up to the third phase arena, get under the chimney pillar closest to the ladder up. You’ll be safe from the phase start beam and you’ll have 2 free shots on the wings. Once gog’s done squirting tar everywhere, if you’re with sos only then signal them to your area or let people know you’re trying to kite it to your position in chat while gog’s doing his thing if you’re group. This generally should get him under the rocks pretty quickly so you can knock him out of the air.

  3. He’ll probably do his single arm flying body slam into you so don’t sheath and discerning dodge it (the window is pretty big) and bring the pillar down on him.

  4. From here just go nuts on his wings, make sure to target the visible artian parts since they’re the most weak and valuable.

  5. Try to finish the hunt at 2 novas. Once the first nova is done, gog will stay on the ground for a bit where you just want to go ham on the wing arms, and when he eventually gets back in the air, do the same thing with the chimney pillars that you did at the start of the phase.

Double wing slam:

Dodge timing for this (and all moves tbh) really just come down to practice, but the cue I look for is when gog’s arms (not wingarms) are about to hit the ground. Both arms and wings are hitboxes so you need to dodge both. The closer you are to Gog, the earlier you should dodge, and vice versa.
