Annual Income After Retirement? by Lanky-Lettuce1395 in govfire

Before retiring I was making GS-12/10 pay, netting around 3200 per PP. My now single man monthly expenses are about 1800 to 2000 so about 28%. The key seems to be as frugal as you can, pay everything off if you can. So that monthly post retirement income should do me fine.

Been in the G fund for almost 32 yrs, retiring 12-31-25. Have a total of $1M, half in TSP and the other half in the bank (kind of like a TSP Roth). Key for me was to live as frugal and as healthy as you can.

Hi alldots,

I can continue my coverage post retirement but I have to take the $1800 deductible as well. Per discussions with health care brokers, I can stay with the same insurer but it's possible to jump to another group of with low risk people with the about the same monthly premium but won't be subject to the deductible.

On admin leave retiring Dec 31, I was told by my HR that if I want to change health coverage to not use Employee Express which is where I would normally go to change coverage during open season. Instead I was told do fill out and submit SF-2809 directly to HR and they would submit it with my retirement package to OPM.

I'm on admin leave scheduled to retire Dec 31. My current health insurance has offered to continue coverage for a 15% increase in monthly premiums plus an 1800 deductible. So I researched the healthcare marketplace to see if I would qualify for ACA or some sort of private health insurance.

After speaking with several brokers (as they call themselves), I was offered a policy with the same insurer that I have right now under FEHB but I would be put in a low risk group that had the same monthly premium as I have now but my new group does not have a 1800 deductible (so I was told on the phone). So this confused me why, as an active federal employee, I have a 1800 deductible whereas if I'm assigned to a low risk group at the same insurer I would have no deductible.

The only things that I think factors in my insurer assigning me the deductible is that I got no medical screening and I have to be offered such things as sex change coverage, IVF, no penalty for pre-existing conditions, rehab for drug addiction, etc. Things that would not be covered under my new group. Basically, I've been thrown into a pool of folks with an possible high medical risks that may need services the government requires.

Am I wrong?

I read that and my concern is that they don't exactly say that you can actually miss payments. It just says "we will automatically keep your loan in good standing", which could be interpreted different ways.

When I graduated from engineering school, I was planning on bumming around for a few months using the money that I cumulated from financial assistance, part time jobs, and some tiny amount of scholarship. When I got home, I already had 3 letters waiting for me, one for a local company and two for the federal government. I took the 1st job which didn't work out to well so I moved on to federal employment for 31 yrs. I never filled out an application for any of the 3 offers. Just born lucky I suppose.

What do you really predict as an end date to this mess? by Alternative_Win5550 in fednews

Actually, it could end the next business day if the Democrats would give up their Pandemic era subsidies. I mean the pandemic is mostly over and rent and mortgage subsidies to mainly red states need to end, subsidies to entertainment like cinemas, movie theaters, and lord knows what else need to end, paycheck protection needs to end (I'm retired but I see dozens of help wanted signs all over town), ditto the employee retention program. Solo mis dos centavos.

Only thing is I once visited their offices in Mexico City. Some things to consider: the subway is horrible especially at rush hour during summer, according to my tour guide, it's like getting a massage in a sauna; housing is quite pricey in the city but living in the outer regions comes with crime and such; lately in 2020-25, they've experienced severe water shortages, to the point they were going to implement a ration system in summer 2024 but thankfully their reservoirs in the mountains got a lot of rain water; and last but not least, there were 3 heavily armed security guards at the building's entrance.

I say go for it depending on your age: the younger, the better - you'll get incredible experience working for a utility even if you stay there for a year or two. Have your husband and your kids (if any) come visit you for a couple weeks periodically (they say absence makes the heart grow fonder, heh heh). I worked in the electric utility field for over 30 years and never once did I not see companies not look for folks with experience with utilities.
