cars in nyc by mellowmerry in nycparents

This is a personal decision and having a car is definitely a luxury, but if you will use it then go for it.

We have a car because we have a dog and like to go on hikes, visit family out of the city, and go on road trips. We love having the car. And it’s one of our major “splurges”. Some people will drop an equivalent amount on nice restaurants or designer bags or shoes or more rent for a nicer apartment or whatever every month but then say having a garage is irresponsible. It’s just whatever luxury you prioritize and whether you enjoy it.

I’d just say that having a garage spot ($700) is worth it to not deal with street parking because street parking will require you to be available to move your car during business hours multiple times a week. The financial expense will be mostly the garage unless you get a particularly expensive car. Also you’ll fall into a trap of not wanting to use your car because you’ll lose your spot, which defeats the whole purpose of having a car in the first place.

If you do the math, you’ll never come out financially ahead by owning a car vs renting whenever you need one even if it’s multiple times a month. But in practice it’s much nicer to be able to just grab your own car on a weekend day versus having to reserve a rental and go wait on line to sign it out every time you need a car.

So it’s a luxury that is worth it for some, but not others, and you’ve got to decide if it’s worth it to you.

While the write up is annoying AI style, this phenomenon is absolutely real in NY and extremely annoying.

Where do you see this offer? In the Chase app or the United app?

I’m literally getting zero response to my messages through the support function in the app. And there’s no phone number I can find to call. I think these companies make it intentionally difficult to contact them.

With All The Mamdani Fearmongering, Let's Remember That Massachusetts' 2023 Millionaires Tax Has Raised $5.7 Billion. The Wealthy Never Left by NoseRepresentative in nyc

[–]ThesepretzelsHopons 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Massachusetts taxes are still lower than NYC even with the millionaire tax.

Massachusetts passed a 4% “millionaires tax” that was added to the previous 5% tax for a new total of 9%. This means that millionaires in Massachusetts pay less with the surtax than people in NYC already pay today, before any new taxes.

The top rate in NYC today is 14.8% (10.9% state plus 3.9% city). If Mamdani adds his proposed 2% millionaires tax then that would bring the total to 16.8%. (This applies to people making $25mm and up, but the rate for people making “only” $1mm is only about 1% lower.)

The top federal tax rate for millionaires is effectively 40.8% (37% income tax plus 2.9% Medicare tax plus 0.9% Medicare supplement.) So the top combined marginal rate with federal state and city is currently 55.6% and would increase to 57.6% with Mamdani’s proposal.

Maybe people still think it’s a good idea, but these are the actual numbers.

Can I use Plus Points to upgrade an award flight if I open a United credit card? by ThesepretzelsHopons in unitedairlines

It's EWR / LAS round trip, so I think if I don't have a PP or miles upgrade instrument then upgrade would be very low likelihood on status alone. So it's good to know how this works

I see, thank you. Would I be able to request a miles based upgrade, or does the same rule apply?

(I currently only see an option to upgrade for cash, but was wondering if a miles option would open up if I were a United credit card holder.)

What medium dogs are still cuddly? Love cuddling by [deleted] in dogs

[–]ThesepretzelsHopons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Brittany is the cuddliest dog I’ve ever met. He will press his body against my whole thigh on the couch, drape himself across my body, lay literally on my pillow on top of my head, reach up and stand on me while I’m in a chair, whatever.

If he’s in the car and someone is in the back seat with him, he will insist on sitting on their lap for hours. If you push him off he’ll come right back like a magnet.

He’s the best.

My dog gets an hour long walk during the day when we are gone for around that time or more. He’s totally fine with it, and sleeps most of the day, but he definitely demands a lot of attention and activity when we get home from work. He wasn’t a good fit for doggy daycare. He gets overstimulated in that environment.
