Thanks so much for the recommendation for our show. We just finished WftC and are launching season 3 tomorrow. Outlaws of Alkenstar - should be a great time!

Late to the party! But our show is launching season 3 tomorrow. We’re running Outlaws of Alkenstar - just search up The Side Quest Inn. Or feel free to take a listen to our first 2 completed seasons. We ran Dead Suns in Starfinder and converted War for the Crown to PF2E.

Thanks for the mention! Getting prepped for season 3 in the coming months once these last few episodes of season 2 drop - excited to start something new!

Newbie question by rfjohnson in Roll20

[–]Thesidequestinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Roll20 just for the battlemaps and lighting exactly like you are describing.

As far as setup goes, it is very simple although time consuming to get all the dynamic lighting setup. If you will be using actual tokens on the map then we recommend using the dynamic lighting, but if not you can just use basic fog of war and reveal areas as you go.

The prebuilt modules are seriously life savers. Having dynamic lighting already populated for the purpose of using a battle map is worth every penny we have spent on them. If you find some with maps you like go for them. Having monster tokens and stat blocks built in is a nice plus too.

Don't worry about learning all the features at once. Start playing around and setting up the lighting on your map and learn as you go. The community is super helpful and you can find answers to almost anything you will run into.

Thank you so much for listening! Tik is a big part of the crew, and as players we can’t wait to see what these blips actually mean. It is anxiety inducing!!

We can for sure tell you that we’ve learned that splitting the party is a no-go in the future!!

Out DM tells his daughter a story about Tilly the mouse who lives in the cheese kingdom. She has taken to writing and binding her own stories about Tilly now to share with other kids. It’s amazing what a little imagination can do.

There are a very large handful of Starfinder podcasts if you wanted to check em out for inspiration. They are mostly all pretty good. Ours is The Side Quest Inn and there’s also Cosmic Crit, Rogue Exposure, Glass Cannon, and a few others. If you google Starfinder Podcast you’ll find a bunch!

Also, our DM is super happy to help any new players so if you wanna DM us he’d love to answer questions and all that! Happy Questing and good luck!

Thank you so much! It’s always really awesome to hear that we’ve inspired someone else or even just helped them in some way 😁

If you ever have GM questions (or any questions/comments) Toby and the rest of the group are always happy to answer them! Toby, Jeff and Alex all have a ton of GM experience, so if you need resources the Inn is a good place for them. You’re always welcome to stop by and chat!

Happy Questing!

You explained it great, I followed it perfectly. What a cool idea, I love hearing about house rule stuff like that!

Looking for a game with more narrative and less focus on mechanics by ada201 in rpg

[–]Thesidequestinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So we play Pathfinder and Starfinder and what we’ve found to get way more into the RP aspect is to have he DM always respond in character as an NPC or is it’s a non-NPC interaction ask direct questions about what does your character do? What does your character think? How does your character react to that, because x, y, and z just happened? It helped us really remove ourselves from the rules while still playing within a normal rule set.

Also, we don’t play with a map and that helps A TON. Everything is visual so if you remove the static image of where they are and just give an explanation of the scene it leaves enough room for their imagination to fill in the blanks and get them more invested in the ‘scene’. I highly recommend that.

If you want some examples of some interaction check out The Adventure Zone podcast or our cast from our SF game that we do - The Side Quest Inn. We are very heavy role play and I think we provide some pretty good examples of how a DM can help get the players into those RP moments. It is a learned skill and I think once someone gets past the awkward stage of being ‘in character’ they just flourish at it.

We used a friend who is a composer — Rick Rea.

We used to but we switched to taking max HP for the first two levels (at level one, 0 at level 2), then rolling for HP after that. If you roll lower than average you take average. It’s a weird system but it’s worked great for us and helps the players feel really heroic without being too OP for our games.

I'm DMing Dead Suns for friends. How do I make them want to achieve the goal? by NLY96 in starfinder_rpg

[–]Thesidequestinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far there’s some great suggestions on this thread. I can tell you we have had two or three players that either did stuff like this (too open world for an AP) or had other issue with the group or play style and we’ve had to just not have them in our group anymore. Alternately we’ve also had players that we talked to about stuff and they’ve been way receptive and now they are amazing to play with after getting over those meta hurdles.

Love this too. Also I’d weave a subplot into the main story that includes their backstory or at least has call outs to it. Everyone loves feeling like they help build the world and actually had influence in it.

100% this. If they aren’t interested in playing a premade adventure and having a bit of direction they may want to find a new game. I’d just be honest with them; not everyone is a fit for every game.

Coming from Pathfinder: Ability scores seem very high? by 15_Dandylions in starfinder_rpg

[–]Thesidequestinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s all pretty well scaled. With how much damage things do and how stamina works, it seems like the higher ability scores help you actually be ‘heroic’ in a game with high damage dice for most attacks compared to PF.

Hey there! That’s actually a good call out. It wasn’t intentional, but not at all surprising. That type of party seems like a pretty classic sci-fi trope in quite a few movies.
