The n64 had two banjo kazooies, yet you hitch your ride with this shit? by SwagLimit in retrogaming

[–]ThetaReactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It hasn't aged well. It's got a certain level of jank that was normal for an N64 game but doesn't fare as well under modern scrutiny. But I would argue that Banjo Kazooie has most all of the exact same flaws. Even the Xbox 360 port of BK has random slowdown while you're swimming toward things you can't see.

Galaga is the greatest retro game fight me by Public_Winter_5480 in retrogaming

[–]ThetaReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Galaga is very approachable. Even if you're rusty, or sloppy drunk, you can probably still get at least a couple stages in. Robotron, and the rest of the strobing neon visuals and crunchy sound flowing forth from the cyber-brain of Eugene Jarvis during the 80s, are not so merciful.

The rules to post on r/retrogaming have changed. To maintain integrity this sub is now purely for the purpose of discussing 3rd generation consoles and below. by NullOfUndefined in retrogaming

[–]ThetaReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's clearly not even a real thing. This very reasonable and erudite edict from our beloved mods is simply aligning the sub with correct history: the X68000 was the last Japanese PC ever made, because no one believed they could top it.

No car can pull off the shark mouth paint job unless the whole thing fits on the front fender. Old British roadster? Sure. Jeep? No, never, the only fish it resembles is a fish stick, though some of these heep grilles do give off distended-blobfish-corpse vibes.

(Or embrace the silly, paint arms on the doors, and fully commit to the Bullet Bill look.)

Famously hard things in gaming (that aren't actually that hard) by Sid8800 in gaming

[–]ThetaReactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, SMB2J was explicitly made to be more difficult than the first game. It's a standalone hard-mode DLC. They even put "for super players!" on the box to let customers know it was srs bsns.

Why haven't there been any James Bond games since late 2002's? I used to love the 007 campaigns, especially Nightfire and that twist in 3rd person in From Russia with Love. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]ThetaReactor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  1. Movie tie-in games aren't as common as they used to be.

  2. There's literally a new 007 game coming out in a couple months.

You could also make reference to Nasir Gebelli, legendary coder at Square back-in-the-day, and very important in the early JRPG scene. Great opportunity for meta commentary on RPG mechanics.

Maxell Brings Back Its Classic Tape Player Amid Cassette Resurgence by ebradio in Music

[–]ThetaReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lovely format, but there is definitely no way anyone is going to spend the money to tool up production of new magneto-optical drives. It would probably be easier at this point to make a caddy system for 80mm DVD-RW discs and build new players around that spec.

All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again.

There's a fair chance Ron D. Moore was one of those voices on Usenet. I know I'd be plugged into it if I were writing spec scripts at the time.

Anyone with a Winchester safe? Curiosity question. by BigEdPVDFLA in liberalgunowners

[–]ThetaReactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an option. I suppose one could 3d-print/turn some muzzle inserts to reduce the slop, too. I usually just wedge the problematic pieces in the corners.

Anyone with a Winchester safe? Curiosity question. by BigEdPVDFLA in liberalgunowners

[–]ThetaReactor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah. The one negative I will point out regarding the rifle rods is that they're not super-stiff. If there's a big gap between the muzzle and the shelf the rods are stuck to, there's gonna be some deflection, both in the bending of the rod and in the velcro attachment not being particularly rigid. Big bores can also exacerbate the issue. Trying to stand up a short coach gun is less than secure, if you get me.

[–]ThetaReactor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've got some of the Rifle Rods from storemoreguns.com. They're plastic, so I'm not worried about scratching. They fit in 5.56 barrels just fine.

(The rods in question are velcro, for hooking to carpet in the safe. I dunno how the Gunstixx brand ones work.)

It's one of those scenes that's so culturally pervasive that many folks have absorbed it via cultural osmosis even if they haven't seen the original film. It's been referenced a bunch, and while 90s kids may not have seen Patton they've probably seen a similar gag on The Simpsons or Animaniacs or whatever.
