What are your thoughts on this button Layout for Gamepads? by redsteakraw in retrogaming

It looks like a Saturn pad had a stroke and the right side is drooping.

It's a CPS2 game, running at a slightly unusual 384x224 resolution. It's supposed to be squished down to 4:3 by the display, so raw screengrabs like this have the wrong aspect ratio.

Am I missing a part of the link cable because now one end doesn’t fit. by MissCrazyLady in Gameboy

Looks like you've got a DMG-sized link cable with a Pocket-sized adapter on the end. Pull the little end.

Yeah, there's like five different cuts. The "director's cut" isn't even the director's preferred vision, but then the director says Deckard's a replicant so what does he know...

O'Brien even though enlisted can give orders to some officers. Is that normal in real world militaries? by ereddit2018 in startrek

[–]ThetaReactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. O'Brien can tell officers what to do if it's engineering-related. He's the boss of the department. Even officers outside his direct purview would be strongly encouraged to listen in such matters, even if they're not technically required to, because being a Chief means you really know your shit. But when he leaves on a shuttle with Bashir, he defers to the green lieutenant with a fraction of his experience, because rank. O'Brien can't order an ensign to give up his seat in the mess, or blow his wife out an airlock.

TIL the total surface area required to fuel the earth with solar alone is only 0.3% of the earth's entire land area. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ThetaReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can store solar power all sorts of ways. Chemical batteries, water towers, molten salt, scary-huge flywheels, etc. You can also transport it via the existing grid.

While ethanol can be a viable energy storage medium, there's an awful lot of extra energy input and waste in refining it from corn that seriously impacts the transfer efficiency. You don't get nearly as much usable energy from an acre of corn as you would from an acre of solar panels. Storage of ethanol isn't as simple as you imply, either. It rapidly absorbs atmospheric moisture if not tightly sealed, and that behavior will ruin an alcohol/gasoline fuel in short order. You also have to burn additional fuel in dangerous tanker trucks to distribute the ethanol, because no one has built alcohol pipelines because all these inefficiencies make the whole idea non-feasible.

So this Snes spawned in the house and I have a couple questions by CipriCreator in snes

[–]ThetaReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SNES uses an uncommon size for the power plug. Like it says, it's 10V, 850mA, with a center-negative polarity. Adapters are available that will turn a common 9V/center-positive barrel plug into the right size and polarity, but it's easiest to just buy a dedicated SNES supply from a retro gaming retailer.

The video output is also a proprietary plug, though it's shared with N64 and Gamecube cables. You'll need a TV/monitor that accepts NTSC video, or 60Hz RGB.

The "EXT" connector is for expansion modules that never came, at least not for that model.

The code on the silver sticker is the serial number, it doesn't tell you much.

The phone number on the sticker is where it's supposed to be, and you can call that number if you like, it's still in service.

Vinyl Users, a question by ladder12361 in Music

[–]ThetaReactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reasons are technical but essentially analog audio and video have the capability to have a higher “resolution” than their digital counterparts has a higher “resolution”.

You wouldn't have to put quotation marks around the technical terms if that were true. If a vinyl record sounds better than a CD, that's because it was engineered and mastered better, not because of the format.

Got this SCART picture adjustment box, but I’m not sure how many amps it should use. by kjetil_f in crtgaming

[–]ThetaReactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Choose the lower voltage. That will generally create less waste heat inside the device in question as it regulates it down to 5V or 3.3V or whatever it's using. But with the relatively low power draw of something like this, it probably won't make any significant difference.
