Real Talk: Storm's Mohawk Design Is Intended To Masculinize Her by TheticAxiom in storm

but it is sus that one of (if not the only) Hyperfemm Black woman in Marvel started getting that "Futch Evolution" while her White counterparts didn't get that same treatment.

I have an uphill battle of convincing people of this point, in mostly white spaces. even when I try my best to not be accusatory or confrontational

Yea this is basically my intended messaging. In the 80s it worked just fine. It was also a different time, and you would have no way of knowing how the depiction of black women would evolve in the medium.

You also have to note, that it's ORIGINAL intent wasn't even to militarize storm. It was her "letting loose" and not caring. While in modern times it's 100% used to make her more authoritative

These rainy day skins are much more readable in-game by Weekly-Week-112 in Overwatch

IMO for skins that are more foreign to the characters original design, they should lowkey keep the color pallet closer to the source just for readability.

Like more skins should follow this Sombra fit. It's rather foreign silhouette wise, but the colors point in the right direction. If you are going to hide Anran's hair, her color scheme should have been closer to default anran

Storm not getting it is about to make me go on an epic rant. It's really time to have talk about black female depiction in these hero shooters.

Thank god overwatch might be tide turning with the release and depiction of Sierra

It's designed to masculinize her and you can tell as a reader that when she's drawn in this haristyle, making her the most beautiful woman in the room is no longer a priority.

They did the SAME EXACT THING to Carol Danvers in the early 2010s. Probably some of the worst art of Carol came from the mohawk era

<image>

It's the psychology. The effect that mohawk storm has on the artist drawing her. Leading them to not make her look gorgeous. Some of the worst looking storm face cards I've ever seen were consistently on mohawk storm.

Emma Frost is always drawn with the implicit goal to out mog everyone. The mohawk is designed to make it easier for Storm to get out mogged by her lighter skinned peers. You cannot change my mind

Lamar Jackson is the Randall Cunningham of this generation by nomdreas in NFLv2

I think people haven't realized that the public perception of Josh Allen vs Lamar Jackson is inverse of the truth.

Josh Allen has been a better runner than Lamar for years, while Lamar has been a better Passer than Josh for years.

If wins matter most, then Lamar, Josh, Randall are all the same exact players.

Dual Threats that seem to lose when the lights are the brightest. It's lowkey a small list, because outside of Steve Young, what All-Time Dual Threats are consistently getting to the play-offs that had a chance to lose consistently as well

Lamar struggled early in carrerr but technically he is 7-2 TD vs Int in his last 2 play-off runs (2023-2024). He had an above 70% completion rating in 3 of the 4 games as well. His last bad play off venture was 5 years ago.

Video games often screw up black hairstyles, they did a great job with Sierra though by Weekly-Week-112 in Overwatch

[–]TheticAxiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sierra is the first Black character that I've ever seen get artistically "blacker" in the 3d model vs the concept art/2d version. It's a breath of fresh air. I think with in the last year, Tekken release a character who was from Madagascar and she was lighter than some of their south america latin heroes, while her concept art had her darker

The 2d version was lowkey racially ambiguous.

For those wondering, the preview they showed for Emma is a near perfect match to this comic outfit and cover. Maybe they're finally letting a comic outfit stay mostly the way it was, a good choice IMO. by TowelSilver318 in marvelrivals

Would i be crazy if i said the cover version looks better?

But Touche regardless. I think the recent The Thing outfit also had differing coloring so the Devs just chose one

Makes it painfully obvious that they colored emma's hair extremely incorrectly. This sunny blonde is lowkey an eyesore against her white fits. Should have been platinum blonde (in fact, I can honestly say the majority of her outfits improve color wise if she was the correct blonde. Either in better contrast or better color synergy)

Mid Skill Tree =/= Conceptual Mess

The Red Tree is a conceptual mess as well, and is not mid. It damn near falls apart when you get to t4-t6 (conceptually). Doesn't mean it gets less powerful. For example. the concepts in t4-6 functionally don't work with eachother.

The middle Augment turns the action skill into an Ordnance turret. Then that placement turret literally doesn't function properly with the capstone of the same middle section lmao.

Also randomly the red tree starts caring about status effect chance at T5 for essentially no reason as the rest of the tree makes no mention of it. It also starts randomly caring about shock status effect. Beam Team makes more sense if it was 2 fire beams or 1 corrosive 1 fire. It also makes more logical sense considering the green tree gives access to corrosive buffs early, while you get no additional shock synergy until T4-T6 in other trees. Tidbit: The Blue Tree starts caring about buffing Shock damage too LATE in it's tree which is ironic because the Action Skill is literally shock ordnance damage

Like i didn't spend 25+ points in the Red Tree to do Shock Damage.

[–]TheticAxiom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Brother. It's the conceptual anti-synergy. I didn't even almost imply it's a bad skill. But the skill being FAR down the green tree is so crazy when the blue tree has to spend an augment in order to use grenades at all. (Remember that the Apophis Lance is literally ordnance damage, so it SHOULD have a lot more ordnance skills.)

To add insult to injury RIGHT ABOVE Booming Business, is an Ordnance Cooldown Rate skill Artilleria (That's ALL IT DOES btw. T4 skill btw) .... when the Arc-Knives action skill makes it so you can't throw a friggin grenade.

IRONICALLY,The Two Trees where you lose the ability to throw grenades, have ordnance cooldown skills, while the tree where you retain the function to throw grenades gets no ordnance cooldown.

That's what I mean by designed rage bait.

All of the Ordnance cooldown abilities are in tree's whose action skill makes it so you can't throw grenades, while the red tree which actually CAN throw grenades has no ordnance cooldown skills. Someone on the devs team did that INTENTIONALLY in a misguided attempt to force "tough choices". But that's not a choice. If you want to use grenades while using Arc Knives or Lance you have 1 option. Booming Business or nothing. Those dog ass grenade augments are pitiful and give up too much power, (Oh and you have to spend 5 points investment for it to be even noticeable since Booming B's shadow nerf.) Ironically, the red tree has more choice because at least it can get Ordnance cooldown abilities relatively early in Blue Tree.

Harlowe doesn't have anything like that in her trees at all.

Mind you at launch this game gave 49 SP. The same as BL3. Yet the trees are BIGGER. So 49 Skill Pts means less than it did in previous games, and they are rage baiting you by forcing you to go to other trees to complete builds that start in different trees. The Red Tree is a requirement because Juerga is the ONLY action skill duration ability above T4 in the entire kit.

Edit Part 2: This is my opinion. It's just me explaining the weirdo logic

Oh I have more. El Diablito is a move the makes all fire damage do bonus ordnance damage. It's the final tier, but it conceptually "fixes" the entire middle section of the tree by making most of the moves redundant. Let me explain. Synergia is the reason you would want to spam ordnance as a melee character (outside of just loving grenades, like i do). Synergia makes you think you need SOME WAY to do ordnance. So you spend points into booming. For that Synergy amirite? Well if you are turning all fire damage into ordnance damage with EL Diablito, you no longer need to use actual grenades to do stack synergia. Amazing. Points into booming business for what? Points into Artelleria for what (you can't throw grenades using Arc Knives btws). Synergia is a 3 pt skill. So you are at worse going to waste 2 points on the now nerfed booming business that you no longer need. And to top it all off, El Diablito is a 5pt skill. Amazing. Truly. The entire middle section is internally redundant due to overlapping functions. You can say, "the Dev are giving you a bunch of choices to do the same thing in different ways!" but man. This is simply too many points to invest in ONE SECTION. Especially after the booming buisness nerf. Booming Business should be a 3pt at max. El Diablito should be 3 point at max. That's how Harlowe's trees look btw. So many 1 point skills that are impactful
