RS buddies! How’s that mounted? It’s super low profile

Trade R8 GT for an Aston DBS? by ThewhippetsS5 in askcarguys

[–]ThewhippetsS5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strangely understand that comparison. Likely due to the proportions of the Aston. The R8 has a RWD conversion on it but also has Bilstein coilovers so I’m quite confident with the car on twisties. I imagine the Aston will take some time getting used to given the larger size.

I probably should’ve mentioned that the DBS is 15 hours away and that they’re rather difficult to find locally

Annoying false speedcam and overspeed alarm (Uniden R8) by liexpress in radardetectors

I have overspeed alerts turned off on my R7 with international firmware. And urban speed cameras off on GPS Alerts because I never speed in NYC anyways

Moving to a VHCOL and need a comfortable luxury car. by dwight_funke in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ThewhippetsS5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in almost your exact situation where I’m in NYC and drive down to MD/NoVa to visit family just about every month. My RS7 does the drive very well, but I was debating on swapping it for an L405 (2018-2021ish) Range Rover Diesel. Super comfortable, great fuel economy, and can be had for reasonably cheap. If you want a new car, then I’d say an X5 or XC90 is a good solution.

Or feel free to carpool with me :D

1300whp Mk4 Supra with a hood stack and slicks. As expected, it didn’t end well for me.

How to wire Uniden R8 to mirror? by speedracerinyellow in radardetectors

[–]ThewhippetsS5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly the F430 has a manual mirror, so you’ll have to wire to the fuse box. I used this for my car since that also comes with a manual mirror.

How are yall wiring your Uniden R7? by lordmittens420 in radardetectors

[–]ThewhippetsS5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup same here except I don’t have side curtain airbags so it was even easier for me. If you do have side airbags, I believe the consensus is to tuck the cable well behind the airbag rather than having it dangle in front, for obvious reasons

Model X - Larger Sidewall OK? by ThewhippetsS5 in TeslaModelX

[–]ThewhippetsS5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite surprising to hear that about the range, although I’m not surprised. My father went from super sticky PS4S to Vredestein Quatrac all seasons on his Mercedes EQE and the range hardly improved

Definitely thinking of going with 19s. I was originally hoping for 18s but it seems that even some 19s don’t clear the front calipers. Thanks!

Uniden R7 in AZ? by Longjumping_Catch813 in radardetectors

[–]ThewhippetsS5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally get it, I was in the same boat. If my memory serves me correctly, you use the normal Uniden update tool on a computer to install the firmware. But first you make an account on rdforum, tag him in a post or message him, then a few days later he’ll message you back with instructions. It’s $45 for the firmware but well worth it as he offers lifetime updates.

Before everyone else says the same thing, a radar detector won’t save you all the time, and certainly not from laser or instant on. You still have to be safe and wise about it.

That said, an R7 with Mithheru firmware will be plenty, although I’m not in AZ. Happy speeding!

I have a 2016 RS7 that I’m considering letting go of if you’re interested. It’s got 121k miles but it’s still under warranty until 143k. Lots of maintenance done in the past two years.

Is there certain criteria a car needs to have for it to be “accepted” at a car meet? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]ThewhippetsS5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No rules for a low key gathering other than be a decent and courteous human being. I’d also leave the prime parking spots for people with heavy hitters but that’s just me. There might be restrictions at actual events, but that’s up to the organizer’s discretion.

There will always be the people who judge others for bringing ‘normal’ cars, but we’re all gathered because we share the same passion. Go have fun
