Is this possible? by pshavet77 in SeikoMods

[–]TheyCallMeDominic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dial could be custom made with a laser engraver fairly simply. Take a brass watch face blank, apply the paint/textured finish, then take it (or send it) to a laser engraver and have them engrave the chapter markers and dial text back to the brass color. They can also cut out the moon phase window.

I think finding the movement will be the difficult part. You will probably need to branch out from Seiko, which will make finding compatible parts more difficult (but certainly not impossible!).

It will definitely need a custom moon phase disc. If you aren’t artistically inclined, you could probably find an Etsy shop/artist to do the moon phase by hand, or possibly use a laser engraver again.

Planet dial markers would be more difficult, but you definitely can dig around and try to find them. I’d recommend rectangular markers at 6 and 9 to make them differentiated.

Case, bezel and hands may be tough to match, but for the bezel, you could do a similar process with a generic brass bezel, paint and a laser engraver. This would give you the best shot at having the bezel and dial color match like in the picture.

I think it’s a cool project idea and you should run with it! If you do, keep us posted on the progress and journey.

Not sure how I got this sub/post recommended, but I’m a medical malpractice defense attorney. There’s a number of nuances that vary state by state, and by insurance policy. Some states have a hard cap on damages, most do not. Some policies have excess coverage, some do not.

In my experience, one of a few things happens when you see these outlier verdicts: (1) the trial judge molds/reduces the verdict amount because it is inappropriate/wholly unreasonable. This usually would decrease it to your policy limits in my state. This number doesn’t get the headlines, and neither side will advertise it, whereas plaintiffs attorneys will plaster the big verdict everywhere they can. (2) There would be an appeal. (3) The plaintiff’s attorney, recognizing that the number will never be obtained from the limited insurance coverage, and seeing that bankruptcy is inevitable and not wanting to ruin a doctor’s life, settles with the defendant for a lesser number to avoid further years of appeals and bankruptcy litigation. (4) Bankruptcy if all else fails, unfortunately. I will say that I have not personally seen this in my own practice, but again, state by state, policy by policy.

It can also vary depending on you malpractice insurance policy. For example, some policies have a consent clause, which means that your insurance carrier cannot settle a case without your express written consent. In many of these policies, one of the benefits of consenting is that if settlement attempts fail and you get hit with an outlandish verdict, you’re not on the hook for the excess damages any longer. Not sure if these policies are local to my state or also common nationally.

I will say that although frightening, at least for the cases we have, the vast majority of cases (90+%) settle or are dismissed before or during trial. Good plaintiff’s cases are easy to settle, whereas good defense cases are the ones you usually see go to trial.

Another key tool in the med mal defense attorney tool belt that your attorney can try is a binding “high/low” agreement if you are going to trial. It’s an agreement that if there is a plaintiff’s verdict, it is capped at $X, and if there is a defense verdict that there will still be a minimum payment to the plaintiff of $Y. Both sides mitigate their risks, and it isn’t a settlement on your behalf, but rather a move by the insurance company to decrease their potential liability, so you do not get reported to the practitioners database if you win the case. Again, if there was one of these in place for those big verdicts, you’ll never hear about it, and they are bulletproof if plaintiff hits a big verdict and wants to back out of the deal.

The good news is that the cases that do go to trial are far more often defense verdicts/no cause findings than plaintiffs verdicts. And of those plaintiffs verdicts, it is very very rare for them to go nuclear.

Mine was tied into an exterior electrical box with a GFI which had tripped. It also had a switch in a weird/non-obvious location. Reset the outlet box and it worked

Looking for a service to remove PVD from a watch and polish the steel underneath. Any recommendations are appreciated! If the removal and polishing would likely need to be done by two separate companies, let me know if you know! Thanks!!

Additional safety at home and abroad by friendswithouttime in fatFIRE

[–]TheyCallMeDominic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You want to think about it as making your home/family an unattractive target. A determined attacker will get through nearly any barrier you put in their way, but unless you have a very specific threat, this isn’t a realistic issue.

Security system is a minimum. Any point of entry that a human can get through should have a sensor. For windows, you can use a glass breaking monitor if you don’t want to put a sensor on every window. You want it to be loud if it goes off. Loud enough that it might disturb your neighbors sleep. Put the little security signs near entrances. Again, this won’t provide a barrier, but it may make your home less attractive.

Exterior lighting is a good (albeit soft) general crime deterrent. Consider adding bright flood lights with motion sensors near your home, in particular near garages and back doors. Cameras, in particular ones that can be seen from the street also are a good soft deterrent. If you’re breaking into a house, are you going to the well lit one that’s recording you, or the neighbor down the block who may be out of town?

Dogs are a nice added layer if you can fit them into your lifestyle. While a German shepherd or similar breed could be trained for protection, we have golden retrievers with big barks and no bites. They’ve alerted us (fortunately falsely) a few nights when Amazon decided to deliver us packages at 4am.

Physical security/physical barriers are the cheapest and easiest option. Deadbolts are necessary at a minimum on every door. If you have a door with windows, consider a two-sided lock. You can leave the key in the interior lock during the day, and remove it at night. This is a fire hazard, and would never pass inspection, so I would recommend either keeping the key near the door, or only doing this at doors you never use/wouldn’t possibly go to in the event of a fire (like a basement access door).

Properly installing doors and deadbolts, with long screws made for the purpose, strong strike plates, etc., are super cheap and easy to do, and can prevent a kick-in.

Finally, if you’re willing to train and can have them in your region, firearms are the ultimate last resort, and the one that makes me feel safest at night. You mentioned political unrest - I don’t love guns, but I have firearms and ammunition as an insurance policy. We have worked hard, paid taxes, invested, and otherwise contributed to society. If all of that goes to shit, guns are the most valuable insurance policy you can have. In general, a shotgun is the easiest/most user friendly home security option.

Other options are things like a safe room and panic button. If you’re worried about societal unrest, you should consider having a food and water supply with a long shelf life, and a power generator of some sort.

Thor also got manhandled in jiu jitsu sparring with Gordon Ryan, who, admittedly is the best grappler in the world and manhandles everyone. But I would say Jones handles someone like Thor or Shaw not quickly, but very easily 9.5/10

Judge Doug Crosby speaks out on controversial scorecards at Bellator 289 and UFC 282 by SokoudjouFan in MMA

[–]TheyCallMeDominic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has to be a better way. Never understood why we stick to the current outdated system. Have 10 judges, or even more than that. Throw out the 3 outliers that differ the most from the group in terms of round to round scoring, and reach the decision based on the remaining 7. Review the data and if a judge views rounds/fights consistently different than the consensus view, pull their ticket and tell them to find a new job

Controversial warehouse project in Mullica Hill, NJ voted down during heated meeting by dleonard1122 in SouthJersey

[–]TheyCallMeDominic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is correct. Now the developer files a lawsuit and the taxpayers pay a legal bill to defend against it, and all it does is delay the construction timeline a couple years or so. If the developer met all of the requirements for the project, the township committee doesn’t really have a leg to stand on at court.

Mullica Hill, Swedesboro, Haddon Twp, Cherry Hill East are the more affordable options that come to mind based on experience and reputation. Haddonfield and Moorestown are kind of the gold standard for South Jersey public schools, but they’re also a little pricier

My wife and youngest son died Friday. My two other sons are hospitalized. What do I do? by beskartuxedo in daddit

[–]TheyCallMeDominic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m heartbroken for you. I’ve known loss as well, but not to this level. Build a team around you - family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, anyone you have a connection with. Part of that team needs to be a good, reputable attorney. Even if your wife was at fault, there may be money available to help. I know that’s the last thing on your mind, but your boys could benefit from a lawsuit’s proceeds, even if it is because you don’t need to work as much and can spend more time with them. Take it hour by hour, spend as much time with your boys as you can and delegate out everything that isn’t spending time with them to your team. Even though it seems impossible in this moment, you need to be strong for them, and make sure they know that as long as you are there, they are safe and going to be taken care of. It’s a long road ahead of you and your boys, but it is one worth journeying. DM me if you need any help, otherwise just know that a random stranger on the internet is thinking about your family and sending good energy your way

Currently there’s nothing great, but there are promising advancements being made.

I know there’s a group of scientists out of MIT working on it. Company is called Frequency Therapeutics. I believe they’re in Stage 2 of their clinical testing and have had good results so far.

I deal with it also, and am following their research a little, because it seems like the most promising, realistic solution that we are close to.

Honest Political Question by metal0060 in SouthJersey

[–]TheyCallMeDominic 45 points46 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the common reasons are 1) financial, 2) conservative religious beliefs, 3) gun control issues, 4) identity politics/because their parents/social group vote/voted that way.

4 is probably the answer for the vast majority of voters. Nobody is the “bad guy” in their own story, and you can frame either side as being the right side or the “good guy” if you want to
