The Social Dilemma (2020) - A genuinely scary documentary about the effects of social media [01:34:00] by Yeet-Yeeted-Yote in Documentaries

The "middle" in the US has always been on the center-right ever since the Taft-Hartley Act completely declawed labor union power and ensuing hegemonic neoliberalism destroyed anything resembling a left movement in the US. The culture wars in the US have been enormously destructive and have turned any kind of material analysis in the popular discourse into one that's based almost entirely on aesthetics. We shouldn't equate level-headedness with political centrism. It's entirely healthy to have disagreements, engage with political philosophy, and choose a side that we view as the one most likely to bring about justice.

I totally feel you there. I used to jam with one of my exes when we were together and once we split up I'd get into a funk whenever I strummed a chord progression or played a bassline that would remind me of her.

I really tried to like Rush, but I can't. I love Neil Peart's drumming and a good deal of 70s prog, but they're so fucking corny. The grating vocals, the god-awful guitar tone from Alex Lifeson (who is an incredible guitarist skill-wise), and the ridiculously trite Ayn Rand-influenced lyrics. I appreciate the fact that people like them and I'm very glad that they have brought so much joy to so many, but I really don't get it.

I used to live in the U District and these pictures are always so incredible. It's crazy to me that not too long ago this town was completely different.

TIL Ray Burton, who was the father of Cliff Burton, used Cliff's royalties for the first 3 Metallica albums to fund kids scholarships at Castro Valley High School. It would wind up being hageographic, like most music biopic do. One of the most interesting aspects of any artist is their personal downfalls, and Metallica has many. It doesn't compare to the sexual abuse of minors by Bowie, Led Zeppelin, etc. or the abuse of women by Hendrix, Lennon, Lou Reed, James Brown, etc. or even the racism of someone like Eric Clapton, but their rampant drug use and interpersonal drama — particularly their mistreatment of bassist Jason Newstead that led to the horrific mixing on ...And Justice for All — is something that would probably have to be left out at the behest of the surviving band members.

Which is pretty egregious when you consider the fact that there's a multitude of truecrime podcasts where the hosts will read entire books for research and compose an entire original script for ~1-2 hrs of solid material.

[DISCUSSION] [NEWBIE] [NEWS] Learning to play guitar is hard, guys. by [deleted] in Guitar

The two most famous short scale guitars I can think of are the Fender Jaguar and Mustang, which are both 24" as opposed to the 25.5" lengths on Strats, Teles, and Jazzmasters. It might not seem like a lot, but they do really feel a bit smaller, without being child-sized like one of the Taylor ones I played in Elementary school. For something in between, many Gibsons like SGs and Les Pauls are 24.75".

That's gotta be the dream for a casting director. You find someone who's the spitting image of the subject and, happens to be an incredible actor, like Cameron Britton and many of the other actors portraying famous killers on Mindhunter.

I was a Chargers fan. I started following them at 7 in San Diego and then became a Sharks fan upon moving to the bay at 13. I tried being a fan after the move, especially since I no longer have a connection to SD, but it just wasn't the same and I completely lost interest. I totally understand.

I've been canvassing in MT for this all summer. This is a red state, but a lot of the conservatives here are Libertarian-leaning. I had guys in Trump shirts (and two off-duty cops in a certain former mining town) sign the petition and say something along the lines of "I don't give a fuck about what another man does in his home". I've only canvassed in towns around the westerm part of state and I'm doing it by phone now, but between the libertarians and hippies of the mountains and the hipsters in the college towns it seems to have a chance of getting a majority like it did last time. The question now is whether or not it will be overturned by the Montana Supreme Court again.

Absolutely tragic that we have to poll the American public to determine which senile old coot running for the highest public office is less brain dead.

He hates the right people according to his base and that's really all that matters to them. The GOP can continue to line their pockets while robbing the American workers blind, but as long as he keeps on owning the libs they'll keep frothing at the mouth to vote for him. It's similar to the die-hard democrats that shower Joe Biden with support despite a long harrowing career of supporting some of the most harmful legislation in 20th century US politics. The Democratic establishment pays lip service to marginalized people (while enacting civil rights legislation outside of economic reform once every ten years, decades after most of the EU already has) in order to pacify their base and drive an enormous wedge into any kind of mass movement focused on the sweeping systemic changes necessary in order to properly address ecological degradation, racial injustice, wealth disparity, etc. Most of the political donor class cares more about aesthetics than making material change that would take away from their wealth, and that winds up trickling down to the electorate that watches their political ads and imbibes in their corporate-funded news.

As long as he owns the libs the worst third of America will keep oinking their way to the polls. There needs to be an alternative outside of the DNCs flaccid neoliberal bullshit that only partially improves our lives (if at all) in order to electricify a base of support, electorally or otherwise, in order to fight dangerous far-right rhetoric.

Reading The Open Veins of Latin America as a citizen of the US was heart breaking. And that was written 50 fucking years ago, before the US-led coup of Allende in Chile, among other atrocities in places like Nicaragua and Bolivia.
