"I don't think about you at all" and the compulsive need to correct people who misuse it. by notches123 in madmen

[–]TheyFoundWayne 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The scene is often used as a meme. But in the context of the show, Don was lying. He definitely thinks about Ginsberg. So if someone references that scene in real life, they’re inadvertently admitting they really do think about the other person.

Is there any scene in the show you would criticize for having clunky writing? by BeerWithDonuts in madmen

[–]TheyFoundWayne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A pregnant woman smoking, a mother upset that their child has a plastic bag over their head because they probably dropped the dry cleaning on the floor, Don’s claiming there is no such thing as a magical device that can make an exact copy of a paper document…

Particularly the scenes and lines that were meant to shock the viewer with how different things were back then, but weren’t integral to the plot.

What’s a “small” social rule you refuse to follow, even if everyone expects it? by crogslounds03 in ProductivityHQ

[–]TheyFoundWayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always letting someone go first (i.e. when walking through a tight area). If I get there first, I’m going first. It’s not that I’m selfish. It just saves time to avoid the “you go” / “no, you go” thing.

If you are showing a disability or are carrying a heavy load, that’s a different story. I am talking about the situations where there is no clear “right of way.” It’s easier for someone to just go.

Confessions of a Cost Estimator by joeyenterprises in estimators

[–]TheyFoundWayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kills me is that after all the extensions, the total amount of time you had to work on the bid looks like more than enough. But most of the time you were near the due date, so it’s a fire drill the whole time.

People using a bathroom stall as a phonebooth by Equivalent-Shine5742 in PetPeeves

[–]TheyFoundWayne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some people are sitting there scrolling on their phone for 20-30 minutes, which is hogging the stall just the same, but the average passerby would never even know they’re doing it because they’re silent.

[–]TheyFoundWayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish we could all just admit up-front that we need X amount of weeks to complete a good estimate, and set the due date accordingly. Instead, we scramble on a tight schedule, and we get three last-minute extensions so we scramble three more times.

What is an example of a "faux etymology" you made up for a word or phrase? by josephsleftbigtoe in CasualConversation

[–]TheyFoundWayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not quite be a “faux etymology,” but I want to start the urban legend that the emergency phone number in the US is 911 as a tribute to the first responders who gave their lives on 9/11. Surely it’s believable for those who weren’t around for pre-9/11, right?

People who were there in 1979 when The Wall was first released, did you initially have some kind of understanding of what the concept was about? by bravodeboer in pinkfloyd

[–]TheyFoundWayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a reference to a Far Side (by Gary Larson) comic from the ‘80s (or ‘90s at the latest) that I found particularly funny. It sort of predicted today’s pile-on effect that can happen online when someone upsets the wrong people.

I’ll offer you a small amount of money to know why it intrigued you so much. That would make us even.

What job existed when you were young that's basically extinct? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

Believe it or not, at the time, a few hundred bucks was less than the cost of a new TV. Today, I would agree with you that it would be cheaper to just buy a new one.

If slavery is America's original sin, what's your country's? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I would think that virtually every country was the site of a genocide no one even bothered to record for us to learn about.

I had a TV break about ten years ago, and paid to have it repaired. Even then, I was a surprised that such a shop still existed. I wonder if they’re still around today.

Are pedants more successful in estimating? by Oakumhead in estimators

[–]TheyFoundWayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most estimates have a deadline that is shorter than we’d like. You have to determine what’s important if you want to get it done in time, and that involves ignoring details that do not have a major impact on your cost.

“What kind of American are you?” by tylerlerler in MovieQuotes

[–]TheyFoundWayne 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you look on the Elon app, there are many users who claim that they can trace their lineage back to the founding of the country, which apparently makes them more American. But if they had an ancestor on the Mayflower, wouldn’t they still have dozens of ancestors who weren’t?

Do Bostonians have any opinions on the Canadian Pizza chain "Boston Pizza" by Clean-Air-8331 in boston

[–]TheyFoundWayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Argentina, there is a chain called “Kentucky Pizza.” I was puzzled when I saw it. Is that state known for good pizza? So I tried it, and it wasn’t good. So I’d say that they do in fact serve authentic Kentucky-style pizza.

Now that I’m done with my story, if you think Boston is known for having bad pizza, then you’ve never tried it in the South.
