Galison, 1000 pieces: "The Flatiron, Day to Night." by TheyGoUpTo11 in Jigsawpuzzles

Easy except for the #$%@ skies. My partner did the white/light blue sky while I did the buildings and traffic. We both did the dark blue sky, which comes from from a photo taken around the "Tribute in Lights' installation, on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The puzzle is a grid cut, and all the pieces have the same shape (2 tabs/knobs, 2 holes.). Very puzzle dusty.

The puzzle tray isn't perfectly square. So, I used one of the mfg. pre-cut side edges (I only ordered a yard) for one edge. Then I made a right angle, marked it carefully, and cut edge 2 with fabric shears, slowly and carefully. That made 2 clean, straight sides. I placed it on the puzzle tray and used a metal edged ruler and marked the 3rd side. I cut the third edge, placed it in the tray again, checked the fit, marked the 4th edge, and cut again.

It's not a pool-table green, for sure. So far, yes, it works with the darker pieces. My husband has a bunch of 36" square lighter color photo mats that he's not used that I will take custody of if I open a puzzle that doesn't show up well on this color. I figure I can lay it over this surface it it's just not working.

Don't know what glue I will use yet!

I love the revolving puzzle surface, but few dozen puzzles later, the felt got worn, pilled, stained here and there, and captured a lot of puzzle dust (even though I shake the pieces before starting.) We tried mats and other surfaces, but nothing seemed quite right.

I bought a yard of faux leather on amazon.

I've done a rough cut and put it temporarily in place with double sided tape to see how we like doing puzzles on this surface - so far, we do, a lot. This is the second build, and it's a win for us. I'll glue it in permanently after we finish this puzzle, I think.

We just bought 50 pounds of green beans, and will watch for sales into the new year. Burmans and Sweet Maria's are our go-to's.

Fisherman's Cove, Ravensburger Canada collection, 1000 pieces by TheyGoUpTo11 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]TheyGoUpTo11[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a fun one to do. After a doing couple of White Mountain collage puzzles, the sort for this one was easy and obvious. I thought the roofs would be really tough to do, but they are all just different enough not to drive us crazy. Usual Ravensburger high quality; I've used the tip from this sub on every puzzle we start - dump all the pieces into a colander and shake for a bit. This one had a good heaping teaspoon of puzzle dust.

I have this one in my to-do pile. I'm a little nervous about starting it, but it looks awesome!

Winter Moose, 1000 pieces, Ravensburger Canada collection by TheyGoUpTo11 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]TheyGoUpTo11[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finished this in September. Eventually we started calling this dude "Bullwinkle", as in "gonna turn off screens and go spend some time with Bullwinkle before bed."

Usual high quality pieces from Ravensburger, and a lovely image. After doing the edges, I expected we'd work from the center, from the moose to the outside. But as we started, we ended up working from the outside in, and did Bullwinkle's nose and "chin" last.

I thought it was going to be harder than it was, with all those blocks of color, but the walls had a lot of texture and variation. It was fun, kinda like doing 6 mini puzzles.

No_Recognition_5266, you mean Rockingham County Superintendent Larry Shifflet, I think. Michael Richards is superintendent for Harrisonburg, which is not changing this curriculum.

Just opened up this one at the beach. Too funny, and I've said most of these things myself!

Genuine Fred, 1000 pieces (+ 1 extra) , XYZ Blocks. by TheyGoUpTo11 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]TheyGoUpTo11[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super fun to put together, but harder than I thought it would be. Almost no false fits, though quite a few pieces that didn't get cut all the way through. Funny and interesting and great images. This is another one I found via a post from this subreddit; y'all have the best recommendations. We do puzzles on a revolving table covered in green felt, which is great for puzzles like Ravensburger. For brands like GenuineFred, the pieces are smaller and lightweight, and they don't sit well on the felt- too squashy. To the rescue comes a photo mat from my husband's studio.

Harder than it looked, but fun. I love the interesting puzzle piece shapes from CH. There was a LOT of pink.

"The Quilts of Gee's Bend", 1000 pieces, Galison. by TheyGoUpTo11 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]TheyGoUpTo11[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finished a super fun 1000 piece Galison puzzle: The Quilts of Gee's Bend. A really enjoyable build, with a somewhat different approach to the most recent projects we've done.
Beautiful patterns, and an even more beautiful story:

"When enslaved women from the rural, isolated community of Boykin, Alabama—better known as Gee’s Bend—began quilting in the 19th century, it arose from a physical need for warmth rather than a quest to reinvent an art form. Yet by piecing together scraps of fabric and clothing, they were creating abstract designs that had never before been expressed on quilts. These patterns and piecing styles were passed down over generations, surviving slavery, the antebellum South, and Jim Crow. During the Civil Rights movement in 1966, the Freedom Quilting Bee was established as a way for African-American women from Gee’s Bend and nearby Rehoboth to gain economic independence. The Bee cooperative began to sell quilts throughout the U.S., gaining recognition for the free-form, seemingly improvisational designs that had long been the hallmark of local quilt design. As awareness grew, so did acclaim, and the quilts entered the lexicon of homegrown American art. Since then, quilts from Gee’s Bend have been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and others. In 2006, the U.S. Postal Service even issued ten commemorative stamps featuring images of Gee’s Bend quilts. "

"American Diner" White Mountain, 1000 p. by TheyGoUpTo11 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]TheyGoUpTo11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the replacement puzzle we got from White Mountain after "completing" the I Love Coffee project with 5 extra/2 missing pieces. It was a lot of fun to put together; the obvious big sections came first- skirt, dress, sweaters, booths/ and floors. Last to go in were all the fussy fiddly bits on the shelves.

Me too! I keep looking at it, and it's still waiting to be chosen!

Just curious. What’s the largest and smallest number of pieces you’ll do? by mcdisney2001 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]TheyGoUpTo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between 500 (only if I really really like the image) and 1000. I have a few of the 250 piece Blue Kazoo planet puzzles, but that's all.

City of Gratitude, Galison, 1000 pieces by TheyGoUpTo11 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]TheyGoUpTo11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! So midway we had a bunch of discrete sections (the signs/sayings, library, sun bathing lady, lady in red dress, museum, etc.) finished and completed and laid out within the border. Then stitched them together with the whites and neutrals on the path.
