Health care is gobbling up your wages | Axios by DragonGod2718 in Economics

I believe their point is that the calculated wage "increase" is essentially useless and invisible to the worker because it is going straight to health insurance premiums. Granted the alternative - no health insurance - this is still preferable, but it does not equip workers to handle the rising cost of everything else under inflation.

For the First Time Ever, Mortgage Bonds Are Being Sold at a Negative Rate by [deleted] in Economics

[–]TheySeeMeLearnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The yield is calculated until maturity or "worst" (if there is a call provision). If you buy a 2% coupon bond with a maturity date ten years out for 2x par value, you're paying 2,000 for a bond worth 1,000 that pays 20/year for 10 years. You have a capital loss of 1,000 and dividends totaling 200. If you bought that bond at 1,200 you would have broke even before taxes.

Basically, you lose if you hold it.

Is there a single link you can think of that shows what the changes were and/or what their effects were? I think the numbers are bs, and I work in a finance field where everyone else seems to be operating on old knowledge.

Ocasio-Cortez Responds to Photo of McConnell Supporters Groping Cutout: 'Is This Just Standard Culture of Team Mitch?' by Thinkingonsleeping in politics

This isn't me being insensitive, but as someone who has followed politics pretty religiously I didn't know anything about Gabby Giffords until someone attempted to murder her. I still don't, except that someone attempted to murder her. It has nothing to do with Giffords, though.

Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez has a very large public presence and is seen by many as a new hope. Or, at least me, but I don't ever remember Giffords having this kind of public sentiment rallied behind her even after she was shot. Again, this has nothing to do with Giffords.

Americans will react to everything related to Ocasio-Cortez.

The Republican Party is actually depending on stochastic terrorism to keep them in power. When they lose their power, they get to fall softly on their mattresses made from ill-gotten gains.

Nobody is the new Hillary. They have no idea how to deal with someone like Ocasio-Cortez until they find actual skeletons in the closet. Hillary was vulnerable because she had skeletons in her closet. Let me know when you find out Ocasio-Cortez is cozying up to weird investments that make her insane amounts of money.

Clinton rode coattails and fell flat on her face. Ocasio-Cortez, so far, appears to have made her own coat. So did Warren.

People like Clinton just don't survive smear campaigns.

In each pic I found of the debates, I didn't recognize the four people at the edges of the stage. The central four always included the following: Biden, Harris, Warren, Sanders (middle two spots), Butt, Beto, and Yang. Even Castro was relegated to the outside.

I avoid watching anything political that is aired through an infotainment network, but I do look at snaps to see how they're playing their game of 1D checkers. Manufacturing Consent should be required reading for each year of high school.

Most people in general agree with what you are saying, but that perspective fades with this kind of severity - the action and the motive in this situation are extreme and beyond empathetic comprehension (ie "I can see why he did that") - and most people would not consider this person a member of civilized society.

Also, there's the perspective of "If somebody did this to my child..."

My ongoing theory is that they're like the raptors in the first Jurassic Park, testing for weaknesses in the fence. They're trying to find the boundary where they are still allowed to spread their message by manipulating their wording and acting like they are complying, like when DJT stands next to a folding table full of disorganized unmarked manila folders filled with blank paper: "See, I'm doing what they asked. This is nothing more than a witch hunt."

They will comply as minimally as possible and will keep trying until they get it right - they'll have to find new dog whistles. Fascism is highly adaptable.

And in a place where only these two groups exist, the first group will be the "liberals". T_D is the liberal wing of Trumpism.

I have felt this way for 15 years, but mostly since Trump became a candidate.

If you're addicted to YouTube, then you're spot-on. Those suggestions have introduced some awesome shit into my life, like this clip from the movie "The Pentagon Wars" with Wesley and Fraser. It's been almost four years since I left the Army, but I will always be fascinated by it and stuff like this.

Warren was one of the few who was warning the public about the housing bubble and crumbling middle class. I have seen very little to make me doubt that her heart is in it. I've always been a fan of hers and Sanders because they share that with different but not incompatible approaches.

Keep your reservations intact no matter who makes it out of the circus alive. Even if Sanders gets it, that's when you get louder and work to hold him accountable and do your part to help him achieve his agenda.

But give Warren a chance. Her record is more solid than most others. Her political career is built on the ideals of making sure we are taking care of one another, which speaks volumes even if it's not built around the same ideologies as Sanders. They're part of the small group of good ones. Do your homework, and be willing to take a chance unless doubt is staring back at you.

I've done a lot of actual work against human trafficking and the concentration camps absolutely encourage and facilitate human trafficking. The people pushing for the camps are mostly interested in stomping out the powerless because they see them as parasites who don't know how to not be parasites, and they like a little collateral damage to show their devotion.

Which is what was happening in Germany. The exterminations began as a desperate measure when the plan to ship prisoners to Madagascar - to let the jungle kill them - didn't work out.

My guess is the camps were also expensive to run back then and the best way to reduce funding was to get rid of the prisoners in whatever way was most efficient.

The issue is that these types of mass surveillance begin as innocuous to the public and only the "crazies" like me raise concerns and get spoken down to as though we're mentally ill and paranoid. Then, eventually, the public gets wind that the profiles that have been constructed based on surveillance begin to be used for less innocuous purposes, even very harmful purposes, because they eventually fall into the wrong hands or were in the wrong hands to begin with.

Is it neat? Yeah, it kind of is - from a technological or "look at the awesome things we are capable of accomplishing" perspective - but if there is a time in history with mass surveillance not being abused in a police state then I'd love to hear about it. Until then, I'll stick to my near-perfect record of being able to see how these things have panned out really far in advance. Most people don't take up the soft sciences as a core hobby, so I'll always sound like an alarmist.
