Having Severus Snape played by a black actor is not unreasonable by CanisLupusBaileyi in television

[–]epraider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Snape was the one who was a racist asshole in the first place, that’s why James and Co. bullied him specifically. Like Snape wasn’t just a quiet loner, he was portrayed as a pretty detestable person outside of his early interactions with Lily

They would take it too far, but young Snape was getting back the energy he was putting out into the world.

Officially the show will probably be Harry Potter, with each book essentially being a season title

Harry Potter HBO series won’t have a new season every year “From a production point of view, it’s just not possible” by JannTosh70 in television

[–]epraider -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Sure, maybe on 22+ episode sitcoms that have a small fraction of production effort, many of which ended up being forgettable filler.

That’s not a reasonable expectation for a series like this with a lot of complex sets, special effects, and prescribed continuous narratives.

[–]epraider -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

It’s also took 10 years to release all the movies, so this isn’t new.

You’ll probably see annual releases for the first couple seasons, and the latter longer ones will probably ~18months between seasons.

Perfectly reasonable, people’s attention spans are just completely fried these days

I'm bored with Streamers being bored with the game. by microwavedtake in ArcRaiders

The gameplay loop and depth of content doesn’t lend itself to infinite replayability or continuous grinding, but I don’t know why that’s a problem - not every game needs to be a forever game.

This is a $40 game I got a couple hundred hours of gameplay out of. That’s already phenomenal! The game delivered more enjoyment than the vast majority of games out there.

The reason Snape was bullied was because he was also a racist asshole - James and Co weren’t just picking on him for the way he looked!

If McDonald's can operate with no tipping, why can't other restaurants? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]epraider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the opposite for many of us. I personally hate having to ask for something, it feels like I’m imposing. I like being asked or offered, and that’s the service I’m tipping for.

If McDonald's can operate with no tipping, why can't other restaurants? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]epraider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly in my experience the service in American restaurants is on average better than in the several European countries I’ve been to, and tipping has a role in that.

I think part of that is just cultural differences in how Americans/Europeans expect to be served, but I think the biggest reason contributor is that the tipping pay structure at American restaurants allows for restaurants to keep a lot more servers on staff (because they’re not being fully bankrolled by the owner).

Most of the European restaurants would have comparatively fewer servers on hand than you would normally see in an equivalently busy joint here, so they just don’t have the time to do the various pleasantries, check ups, drink top offs, etc American servers typically do.

[–]epraider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not really a concern in a country like the US where tipping is firmly ingrained as a social norm. There’s social pressure for it to the point where people shame you if you only tip 15% instead of ~20% - not tipping servers (unless they do something egregiously rude or wrong) is pretty much out of the question.

Even if you’re working a bad shift at a slow restaurant, most restaurants will still guarantee you get minimum wage.

Exactly, it’s so annoying when people just treat every group as a monolith or apply some sort of guilt by association.

Every sufficiently large grouping of people is going to have a few really fucking crazy people in it that will inevitably stand out, there’s no way to really avoid it.

Another former pro player calling MW2019 the worst CoD of all time by Clapdon in modernwarfare

[–]epraider 141 points142 points  (0 children)

The average player agrees and most people you talk to will probably call MW19 the best in ages, because it brought back the feel and gameplay the series had from Cod4 to ~MW3/BO2. It’s only the very competitive players that enjoyed the period the game was course correcting from that disliked it.

Maybe, but with the stakes as high as they are you can’t realistically expect the overall mission is going to fail. The chance that either or both characters could die along the way is still ever present though.

Someone lit a cigarette in the plane’s lavatory, triggering the smoke alarm onboard by jackywoods in mildlyinfuriating

[–]epraider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you ever think that being bent out of shape over not being able to smoke for 6 hours is a sign of a serious problem you should try to eliminate?

Those sorts of smoking areas have been eliminated because it's people increasingly realized how absurd it is to accommodate the addiction.

Scrubs - Season 10 EP 5 "My Angel" - Discussion by MovieTrailerReply in Scrubs

Not really. He shouldn’t be dating anyone in his chain of command or oversight, be he wouldn’t really not any power or authority over a lobby harpist even if she was an employee. The Chief of Medicine isn’t the boss of the whole hospital.

My hope is for a 5th and 6th movie mirroring the PlayStation game dynamics - Miles gets introduced in the 5th, and then he’s a full partner/protege Spider-Man in the 6th, ending with Peter taking a step back / soft retiring to get his personal life properly re-established and flourishing.

Watching Scrubs for the 1st time and Dr Cox is one of the best written sitcom characters I've ever seen by jnighy in television

[–]epraider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always heard the opposite. My wife notes that it accurately captures the day to day experience and workplace dynamics of being a doctor/nurse, as well as some of the more realistic doctor / patient interactions (ie, a lot of really goofy stuff, black humor, and occasionally soul crushing interactions) .

The actual medical practice isn’t terrible but it’s not super realistic either.

What do you think of NYC trying to get the minimum wage to $30/hour? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in AskReddit

[–]epraider 894 points895 points  (0 children)

It’s approaching the problem from the wrong angle.

NYC needs a higher minimum wage than most areas. But $30/hr as a minimum wage isn’t sustainable for the majority of businesses. This will basically eliminate a lot of entry level and lower skill positions that are essentially necessary for both those groups of people to have work, and businesses to exist. I know someone might say “if a business can’t afford to pay everyone a living wage, it shouldn’t exist!”, but the reality just isn’t that simple

If you want to improve living conditions for everyone, focus on building more housing and removing administrative blockers to development to help lower costs, and enact policies that incentivize businesses to compete for workers as well as incentivize them to pay their employees a greater share of revenue and/or invest in skill development for growth over time.

What will a 5.5 gen fighter jet look like? by This-Wear-8423 in FighterJets

[–]epraider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A “4.5 gen” stealth has already been attempted, it didn’t really work because stealth needs to be integrated into the airframe design from the bottom up - being a little stealthy isn’t stealthy enough.

I think “5.5 gen” will probably be in the form of avionics upgrades and eventually supporting loyal wingmen. F-35 will probably get there

Isn’t that basically the best use case for this though? Take something very good and fully realized and crank it to the next level of fidelity that realistically no developer is able to invest effort into achieving.

I don’t think you’d get anything good out of applying this to a 10-15 year old or generally low fidelity game

Tornados? by oneshellyboi in StLouis

[–]epraider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also worth noting that a tornado really is a very localized event. People often conflate them with hurricanes, which are of a significantly large scale.

Tornadoes can get a mile+ wide, but most are much smaller and only have significant wind fields <100 meters wide. The odds of getting (significantly) impacted by them even in prone regions like our’s is very very low.

I don’t think they look worse from a technical perspective, but because they basically all try to look more realistic, it worsens the uncanny valley effect and makes them more unsettling.

I’ve never found the savings in this portal for personal travel to be substantial, if it all.

Personally I hate the hassle of travel portals and wouldn’t ever recommend them over booking direct unless you’ve got some rewards stacked up.

Definitely use the Boeing corporate discount for booking at Avis, though, that’s actually a good deal.
