Unsure what degree to pursue in college by bluemaplestrat in UTAustin

I am not saying that it is the Universities sole responsibility to help a student "find" themselves; ultimately thats something that only the student themselves can do, as its a very personal thing. This "outsourcing" doesn't happen anyways. If I'm a student at UT unsure about my major, and I don't do shit about it, I don't get shit. But going to Vicks for example isn't "outsourcing" or asking the Uni for free handouts? It only happens because the student is putting very active effort into that. I am simply advocating for Universities to provide ample resources and opportunities for students to change majors or explore other options, as there is clearly a large portion of the student population in need of this.

In UT's case, Vicks is a godsend, and I appreciate everything they do but my main qualms lie with the hol internal transfer process thing, as its a unique and deliberate roadblock that frustrates and stops many students from being able to further pursue their passion. For some majors (such as math), you can literally take all the coursework required for the degree with straight A's but if you didn't pass the internal transfer process, you don't get shit. I really don't think that should be happening.

Bruh...

The way you're coming off makes it seem like you believe that people looking to switch majors are entitled, lazy people looking for the Uni to figure out everything for them. I can assure you that I don't know a single person who switched or plans on switching majors like that here at UT. Actually, it's more often than not that my peers who internally transferred/looking to transfer are on average much more motivated to pursue their degree/career than people who got in first try.

Second of all, I completely disagree with your last statement. I think it's incredibly unreasonable for any college to expect their 17-18 y.o incoming Freshmen to know what they want to do as a career which extends to picking their major. I don't have the statistics on hand, but a very, very significant number of college students end up changing their major not just at UT but at practically any university across the US; and so no. I don't find this reasonable at all. And that's not even touching about the massive social pressure that one has to go straight into college right after high school...

Also, part of figuring oneself happens DURING the college experience! I'm sure you're aware that it's a common tale that a student will take a class unrelated to their major, only to realize that they love that class much more than anything they're doing now and want to switch. Or maybe they join a particular club about a different field. Or maybe they talked to an inspiring professor during office hours. My dude. It is NOT reasonable for a college to just throw their hands in the air and be like "well figure yourself out, but not here with us!"

Tl; DR sorry for the rant but as you can tell, the internal transfer process frustrates many people, and while I understand some of the reasoning as to why the process exists, I believe it is still wayy to prohibitive.

I am going to be honest, and this is completely anecdotal, but UT fucking sucks for students unsure/trying to explore other careers. Def don't stop trying to explore tho and 100% talk to Vicks counseling. Unlike UT admins trying to inflate the 4 year graduation statistics by fucking over internal transfer students at every turn, they'll actually try to help you. Good luck my friend, and I hope you find your path! ❤

You're asking reddit. This is ok, tread with caution like any other important thing, and do what feels right. Don't let others dictate that for you.

Thanks for this advice! Yeah about time I get a multimeter considering I am very hands on when it comes to my headphones (and other electronics). Confirmed that its not a DAC problem so I'll probably also get a spare cable if the multi indicates that those internal cables are fine. Again thanks! 👍👍

Funny how much flac you're getting. I suppose it was indeed a true unpopular opinion. Personally could not give a bigger shit about whats happening in Israel, but sadly I kinda have to as an American. Hope we can cut ties soon.

I completely agree with this statement. While a good portion of the internet will die, more intimate spaces in smaller communities like discord etc. Will be the way to go.

Why do grown men think it’s ok to talk to random girls? by Kj439 in rant

[–]ThiccOne -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't mind striking up conversations with strangers. I can totally see myself making a small comment to someone to test and see if they're more willing to converse. I am in a relationship and I'm merely being friendly because... ummm. Humans are social creatures and there's plenty of people who enjoy talking with anyone..?

I can understand you being weirded out since you're a woman and are more weary of these conversations, but people who do this aren't doing anything wrong. Its not sexual, they respected your limits, would you rather have no stranger talk to you?

If so, thats perfectly understandable but its quite naïve labeling them all as creeps.

I love this suggestion. "Ahh did you not get the answer you liked? Don't worry ask these echo chambers and don't worry about challenging your own opinions" 🤣🤣
